Retired/recovering #petroleum #geologist, fascinated by #bicycles, bike fettling, #cycling, #geography, #sedimentology and #GIS. Hates #Brexit. Open to an independent Scotland in the EU.

Unable to think of a single UK city, town or village that wouldn't be immensely improved by a vast reduction in motor traffic.

I mainly use Mastodon but I am also on #BlueSky to follow & interact with people who are not here. Having said that, I am pissed that due to the #UK government age verification laws I have to prove my ID/age via a 3rd party company to use the site for direct messaging. Thank you but no. I could use a VPN to get around this but I found more elegant solutions on github. Adding the suggested script into UBlock Origin on #Firefox worked a treat. #privacy https://gist.github.com/mary-ext/6e27b24a83838202908808ad528b3318

If the government really wanted to get kids off #socialmedia it's pretty easy. Rather than ban the <16's I would :

  1. ban algorithmic feeds on social media
  2. ban advertising on social media.

Bit like #Mastodon really. Social interaction is ready and waiting for everyone but you have to work at it a bit.

IMHO most kids would likely give up and go do something else.

FWIW I'm a massive fan of knobs in cars. One of the first cars I drove was a Volvo 145 which had every knob a different shape so you could locate it by touch alone. The pinnacle of automobile dashboard design!

The Moray coast and #Aberdeenshire are not the most visited parts of #Scotland, but I am just back from #cycling Route EV1 from Inverness to Aberdeen. The route was delightful, encompassing moorland and forest from Inverness to Nairn, fishing villages/towns on the Moray coast, and fertile farmlands in Aberdeenshire. Ups & downs but not too hilly. Highly recommended. #biketoot

Our next surprise was to see on my phone GPS that our ferry to #Dublin, the Mannanan was travelling at 61km/hr. So fast! How could this be? Stepping out to the stern revealed all; we are on a massive catarmaran with ginormous engines. Check out the wake!

I have just re-read The Fifth Elephant by #terrypratchett & was a bit embarrassed to say that on my first reading I had missed that a main feature of the story is a parody of the theft and return of the #Scottish Stone of Scone, aka Stone of Destiny, rendered by #Pratchett as the Scone of Stone. As in life & in the book, is the recovered stone/scone real or a fake, & more importantly does it actually matter? The symbolism is the thing.

We borrowed a thermal imaging camera to check our flat for cold spots. We were delighted to see how effective our newly installed double glazing windows are. In the picture we are the upstairs flat. Our downstairs neighbours still have single glazing.

I now feel a little better about the swinging cost of the windows. That will teach me not to buy another property in a conservation area!

Have you ever wondered why you share your Scottish surname with a #Jamaican?

If you have any interest in Scottish history, I highly recommend the book "Bought & Sold, Scotland, Jamaica & Slavery" by Kate Phillips. I knew that Scots / #Scotland had a long history of involvement in the slave trade & sugar plantations, but I had no idea of the depth of involvement, especially in #Jamaica. Every level of Scottish society financially benefitted directly or indirectly. An eye-opening read. #slavery

@moh_kohn@mastodon.scot I agree, up to a point. I lead group rides where people turn up on bikes costing <£100 to £1000's. We all start together, we all finish together, we all have a nice time. The cheap bike is totally validated but as the video mentioned, a cheap old bike almost always has mechanical issues. Wheels, tyres and drive train are the big concerns and if in poor nick could easily run away with £200+ in repair costs unless you can do it yourself and source second hand parts. Not everyone can.

In the UK that is about £24k/year. Over a 45 year working life that is only £1.08 million in total. Compare that to the annual £50 million that could be received from simple banking of £1 billion.

@Infoseepage@mastodon.social Your point about Ted I being slipped a dummy is quite possible, but if the symbolism is the issue it doesn't matter if most people think it is the "real" stone.

Regarding the footprint at #Dunadd, this is truly a fake. I'm a geologist & on my first visit I looked at it & realised that the stone around the impression didn't match the surrounding rock. I took my hand lense & realised it was a man made composite. The original is said to be below. https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/12357773.coronation-stone-not-all-that-it-appears/
