I thought I had the best time at the largest vintage computing event in the world. But then someone rolled up with a cesium atomic clock, and I was no longer sure... My video covering VCF Midwest is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW-Hp8-DAB0 #vcfmw

I found an atomic clock at the world's largest vintage computer show

A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure. So now I have three GNSS PPS watches. And I can measure UTC to within 20-40ns. Just need my entire forearm. Not done yet: portable rubidium atomic clock for holdover.

What's that saying... 'If buying isn't owning...' Sony deletes another large stash of movies off users' accounts after users "purchased" the movies. Cue up the "I'm tired boss" meme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l19tXQcw2tE

The Pi 5 16GB was never a good deal. But at $300+, it's just... don't buy it. Luckily, Pi 4s still start at $35 and Pi 5s at $45. And the 4GB Pi 400 is somehow $50 at Micro Center. Video with more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53AkaYvw63U

This was never a good deal.

Bambu Lab 3D printers: never again.

They're breaking the open source social contract (for the nth time...), and I'm past hoping they'll amend their ways.

Finally! Proxmox VE officially supports Arm. At least the more server-grade Arm platforms.

I tested it on my Ampere Altra Max 128-core workstation, and it runs there (though I did hit a couple hiccups).

QuadRF is a phased array antenna that can see WiFi through walls, spot drones in the sky... and it's powered by a Pi 5 and FPGA board. Very neat device, we have a full video up on Geerling Engineering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QESevE2c_cc

Today I test the $699 Dell XPS 13, and see how it compares to the MacBook Neo. I didn't realize it would have a more efficient CPU, upgradeable storage, or run Linux as well as it did... It's not flawless, but it's a good budget laptop. Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2B7oI0FYqo

My Spectrum Business Internet connection goes down weekly. I finally set OPNsense up so I can swap to a borrowed cell backup connection.

Blog post here: https://jeffgeerling.com/blog/2026/opnsense-backup-internet-gateway/

But if you have backup 5G Internet, what do you use? (Midwest US)

Every month it seems like another YT channel I follow in tech replaces the human voice backing videos with a cloned AI voice. Makes me wonder at what point in the past they went all-in on generated scripts. (It's not all bad, if someone is still at the helm who actually cares. But overall quality declines.)

I got to test a Pixel Pump 2 (by Robins Tools) for my 2nd SMD PCB. I just used it for manual pick 'n place; it's a solid little bit of kit if you do this stuff often. Video here: https://youtube.com/watch?v=8WzAy72yCJA Thanks to @idlehandsdev for putting me in touch!

I tested WisdPi's 10G Ethernet Expansion Card for Framework computers. Good news: It can hit 9.4 Gbps, in certain scenarios. And it'll be < $100. Bad news: It uses USB-C and that means the combinations where it'll hit full speed are limited 🥲 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMXT6mEPR0Q

This 10 Gbps USB-C adapter is under $100, tiny, and fast—check out the new generation of 10 GbE NICs in my video. If you need faster Ethernet, this may be the ticket! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYZbZJZfCFI

I didn't beat a bunch of college students with my new SBC cluster, but it still performed admirably. In today's video, I tested the DeskPi Super4C in a new mini rack from Waveshare. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjmKpDNsTa8

Also realizing materials matter a lot, and even ASA or ABS aren't amazing for tight screws and dynamic loads...

From my research, Reolink was supposed to be one of the best local-friendly cam companies... Strike 1: I can't set up my new Reolink camera without the App initially (web UI disabled by default). Strike 2: Can't add RTSP user even in app, so I have to use admin for RTSP?!

@poopi@mastodon.online it's mostly because companies pick battles with tiny projects and individuals, instead of other companies. I don't blame an individual for not wanting to upend their life and plonk down $15k+ for lawyer help ($500/hour) just to be put under the big company's PR firm guns.

@montef@mastodon.social It's tough — I look back and regret tossing some things... but also realize if I didn't, I would've had more stress managing the things I didn't toss! Going through that now with some of my AV gear (receiver, speakers, blu ray and DVD stuff...). Like I'm sure I'll regret getting rid of at least one of these things in a decade or two. But for now, better to have shelf space and peace of mind that it was taking up!

@d_b_4_2@mastodon.social I watch a lot of channels here and there, it's just that AI is infecting a lot, slowly over time. Fireship is one of the more recent ones I noticed. On blogs (and Substacks, Mediums, etc.), it's a pandemic already. Harder to find anything new that's _not_ AI-generated.
