Was thinking about how nearly all my trans friends use signal for communications, but how convincing my cis friends (save a couple who are pretty aware of the world, and one who is a journalist) to do so has been an exhausting effort to the point that I don't even bother anymore. The biggest argument is "but why????" from the safety bubble of a group of people who have never even glimpsed a thought of being persecuted for their own existence.

Very excited to have found a stool I can use to sit while cooking. It means maybe I might be able to cook a little more often, and will give respite on the days my batteries disappear halfway through cooking and all I want to do is crumple into a ball on the floor. How was I ever a ship's cook? It was pretty brutal spoons wise then, but now I think I'd just die after a day. #mecfs #ouchThatsTasty

I just had a small, teary moment when I was standing outside and could smell people cooking breakfast. I never thought I would ever live somewhere that smelled like pancakes and bacon outside on a Sunday morning.

Eight years ago, I would be listening to cops harassing homeless people, wheezing from car exhaust and smelling hot garbage. My life has changed in both horrifying and beautiful ways and I'm so glad I get to be here this morning, but in a bittersweet way where I know that the cops are still harassing homeless people and I feel kind of helpless in the world. Life is a pretty wild ride.

Irish and gaillige speaking friends, I'm changing my last name to my great grandmother's maiden name, which I know would have been prefaced with ní, but I'm agender so that feels a little weird, and I could go with the O' but I'm wondering if there's ever been a non gendered preface for names in Irish language, or if maybe there is one created now? I know it's maybe a long shot, but I would love to find out if I have an option, otherwise I may just run with O'. #Irish #gaillige #names

Food, Music, Joy in the Midst of Grief

I deal with a lot of grief surrounding my MECFS. People who knew me in the before times, knew I always had about six things on the go - At least two jobs, a very active band and volunteering with a harvest collective and music projects as well as studying kung fu for nine years. When I finally pared that down to one job, I used to cook meals for a crew of 13, three meals a day for a month straight, rain or shine, rough seas or calm waters. I did this so I could access better care for my chronic health conditions in my time off. Even thinking about that makes me want to cry sometimes. Yesterday a very old friend stopped by for a visit and wanted to see the guitar I had built years ago and we talked about the sad reality of music these days. He's an extremely talented musician, has been on the cover of Rolling Stone, had just played a big festival the day before and still had to get up at 6am to go to work as an electrician the next day. I don't think these were the lives we were expecting when we first started making music together at 14 years old. I gave him my PA mains to donate to his son's new Misfits cover band and felt like we were passing the torch to a younger generation who still have hope for music. I lost a lot when my ME got bad, but this morning I kissed my beautiful partner who graciously makes sure I'm never homeless, which I would be without her. I hobbled around with my cane and cut some fresh mushrooms from the mushroom bed I painstakingly built in tiny ten minute increments of work. I cooked them with some garlic that I planted in another series of ten minute increments. I managed to make some scrambled eggs and pet the cat. And now I'm having a rest for several hours. Today is one of my good days, and in comparison to the life I had before that might seem bleak, but there is a beauty in our tiny garden, ongoing love, old friends, a fresh cooked breakfast and a cat who demands near constant affection. Life is astonishing and in spite of everything I don't think I would trade this. #mecfs #ouchThatsTasty

@Hellybootwader@mastodon.scot Coconut coir is a viable alternative to peat. Naturally organic and made from waste products. I don't use it often because of travel distances, but it's great stuff and can be heavily compressed to reduce its shipping footprint.

@emilyvanartist@mastodon.social @beandreams@friendhole.social We used to cut the bottoms off the bull kelp and spin it really fast to make tones. You could shift the tones by cutting them shorter or longer and when you get a bunch of people together it's amazing.

They were the hug of acceptance I didn't even know I needed until I had it. It still took me another twenty years to figure myself out, but I'm so glad it was there at such a fragile point in my life.

It's funny, I decided nalbinding would be good cuz you can't drop stitches, but I didn't consider the complete lack of ability for my ADHD brain to keep track of tiny wooden needles.

@ChristineMalec@mstdn.ca I really enjoyed it. It was hard and harrowing sometimes, but I got to see a lot of places most people wouldn't be able to in a lifetime. The only downside is when you are cook and it's rough, you still have to make food for everyone. Lots of strapping in pots with bars, and planning things that won't spill on you while you are cooking them if you hit a wave. Kinda fun like surfing most of the time, but everyone's inner ear will eventually give them brutal motion sickness, in which case, you still have to cook.

My friends tried to convince me to apply for an extended visa and offered me a job, but my heart could not survive without decent Mexican food. Legitimately. It was the only thing I ate for a month when I got back. I didn't realize how multicultural my upbringing had been until I encountered food in the late 90s there. It was complete culture shock for me. The other thing that blew my mind what how blatantly racist people were to the workers in Chinese and Indian restaurants. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor on more than one occasion. You fucking come here to eat someone's fucking food and then openly insult them and their culture?! The audacity was unfathomable.
