I believe they're just posting what would actually have been heartwarming, rather than donating significant unpaid labor to a corporation's profit margin.
The idea behind it is that systemic problems call for systemic solutions, though perhaps not clearly articulated.

I've used the TeX coffee-stain package
Useful for drafts and notes and works better on the screen than an actual coffee cup (I've tried that too, and it got expensive).

The author of that article still has no idea what happened. A random word generator did something random, then produced a random word string explaining it.
Nothing malfunctioned. It simply produced a string closely resembling strings found all over the internet, including strings that contain apologies. That's what they paid for.
No mistakes were made by the software. It generated plausible strings - so plausible that the author still believes they carry some meaning.

I can think about genocide without looking at cat pictures, so today I'm actually not in the mood, personally.
I'll be letting my inner grouch out today. I mean, more than usual, most likely.

I knew someone who was convinced to move from Florida to California and then understood, after the fact, that the real motivation lay in the fine points of divorce law. Something or other to do with joint property I believe.
(Also the basis of that particular relationship, in the beginning, was their lack of a common language.)

I like the suggested "synthetic text extruding machine". It seems to convey the functionality vividly,
Or "sentence-like fabricator" in another phrasing.
On the other hand "hallucination" is unfortunate, but appears to have pretty definitively won the day. Possibly worse than "AI" which we are likely stuck with till the next thing comes along.

From time to time I pass a sign that says "Jesus has your place in heaven" and I don't know what they're thinking but it's not a good look.
Not that I was planning on using it, but still.

Not really. There are lively discussions going on in most, often involving politics, in particular. Some similarities with Vienna in 1933. More than one would like, but that's just because 2026 is more like 1933 than one would like.
In some of the cafes they are just playing chess, admittedly, but you make your rounds. Actually the most effective way to keep up with what is going on.
Occasionally a drunk has to be thrown out and someone is monologuing to himself in a corner,

On the other hand some of us had thesis advisers who experienced the same thing elsewhere, and wound up in the US as a result. They were the fortunate ones. As were we.
My own thesis advisor didn't dwell on that in later life, but the topic did come up.

An Immense World (Ed Yong).
Not a very recent read in fact but it's stayed with me and probably is not as well known as it deserves. A good look at the evolving science around the various sensory universes occupied by a broad range of animals, eye-opening [sic]. Full of wonder.

Goes well with the fiction of Sue Burke incidentally (notably Semiosis, another favorite from a ways back).

This can be exploited. Back in the day a fellow published really valuable information knowing his former employer would not be willing to reveal in court that they actually cared about the results.
And that was the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime.

It seems about right (for injuries - I suppose there are a few hit who aren't actually injured). About 10% fatalities, and it seems easier to get those numbers - though presumably with more variability. 20 last year, but it seems to run more like 30.
No vaccine for it as yet but there is medical advice on prevention and treatment.
That would probably be a harsh vaccine, a little worse than the shingles one.

Eliza never passed the imitation game and wasn't structured to plausibly take it.
I don't think the current language models are quite up to that particular test either (certainly not with the default settings), but they're in the ballpark. It is certainly true that the limits of a purely linguistic test have become transparent of late.
It's a far better test than chess playing, certainly. On the other hand, Goodhart's law applies.
