Moore's Law is dead. Intel introduced the 64 bit "Core 2" processor in 2005 so laptops could access more than 4 gigabytes of RAM. Moore's Law's 18 month doubling time says the following 21 years should have 14 doublings to 64 terabytes of RAM in each $2000 laptop. That's why silicon valley execs went crazy: they no longer have free growth. Their business model doesn't WORK. They've done regulatory capture, brute force spending inflating a snake oil bubble, and nothing's working.

Culture is full of persephone eating pomegranate seeds, beware of greeks bearing gifts, don't eat fairy food, don't accept favors from demons because you'll owe them, monkey's paw wishes... And then all these "ain't no such thing as a free lunch" fuckers tell you to check in LLM pull requests, and mock the reluctant as fools. STRINGS ARE VERY MUCH ATTACHED. This crap is fucking sticky at nuclear contamination levels. You pivoted from NFTs to this, we watched you do it.

Microsoft outsourced its defense contracts to china, and hired "digital escorts" to act as an accountability sink (like they're doing for AI). A Little-Known Microsoft Program Could Expose the Defense Department to Chinese Hackers

The Pentagon bans foreign citizens from accessing highly sensitive data, but Microsoft bypasses this by using engineers in China and elsewhere to remotely instruct American “escorts” who may lack expertise to identify malicious code.

Myspace was THE social media site... until Fox News' parent company bought it in 2005. Hotmail was THE online email site... until Microsoft bought it in 1998. Skype was THE video calling platform... until Microsoft bought it in 2011. Twitter was THE short form social media site... until Elon Musk bought it in 2022. There's a pattern here. Microsoft bought github in 2018, dice.com bought sourceforge in 2012...

A bunch of firefighters in full gear (https://fire-end.com/collections/halligan-tool/products/hire-hooks-hybrid-halligan-bar !) walked through the apartment's common area (I asked, "burned food set off an alarm, all good") and I was immediately struck by how DIFFERENT an experience it is from police doing the same thing. I'm reminded why nobody has ever written a song called "fuck the fire department". These guys are unambiguously here to help, know what they're doing, and _walk_ cool without trying. After a year protesting ICE, it's like... wow.

The death of Moore's Law is also why the AI bubble buildout causes shortages: https://www.fabricatedknowledge.com/p/the-rising-tide-of-semiconductor Moore's Law didn't just make things cheaper, it produced more of them. Moore's Law was "twice as much for the same price every 18 months" meaning the same amount was half the cost. VC bros trying to brute force their way to the old growth curve physically cannot buy enough RAM and storage because the amount the old laws led them to expect does not exist. Exponential growth stopped, past tense.

Every period of exponential growth turns out to be an S-curve. You can't sell 2x as many phones each year on a planet of 8 billion people forever, eventually everyone already has one. Moore's Law's S-curve bent down in 2010, and we've had maybe 3 of the expected 10 doublings since then, putting us ~100x behind the old trend line. That's why they announce data centers twice the size of downtown Minneapolis using water cooled chips powered by a dryer outlet each: Moore's Zombie.

The LLM bubble is the Weekend at Bernies version of the dotcom boom, which happened on DIALUP internet. The first linksys router came out the year of the crash (before which wifi and always-on broadband connections weren't readily available). The first modern smartphones came out 6 years later. The dotcom crash happened with a decade of technological growth left. But there's no exponential LLM growth, only linear returns for linear cost increases. Silicon Valley beating a dead business model.

Amazon Web Services was built when Moore's Law was still happening, meaning they knew their data centers would be cheaper to repair and cheaper to upgrade in future. AI data centers will only get _more_ expensive to maintain as the helium runs out and international shipping faces state sponsored piracy and so on. They're spending trillions to do what AWS spent billions on because Moore's Law stopped, but their business model depends on it continuing.

Every problem she lists would be solved by guillotining enough billionaires.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBZv0_MImIY

Billionaires can voluntarily stop being billionaires at any time, they're the ones who insist it can only happen over their cold dead bodies. I lobby to change the law to acknowledge their position: hoarding an offensive amount of capital should be a capital offense, with due process of law, ending at a guillotine. Taxes are a wishy-washy compromise position nobody takes seriously.

The reason "AI" data centers are so loud: https://gizmodo.com/this-viral-data-center-sounds-like-satans-buzzsaw-2000791122

And terribly polluting: https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/pollution-musks-unpermitted-xai-power-project-hits-hardest-black-communities-2026-07-14/

Is real gas turbines are backordered for SEVEN YEARS: https://www.spglobal.com/energy/en/news-research/latest-news/electric-power/052025-us-gas-fired-turbine-wait-times-as-much-as-seven-years-costs-up-sharply

But most of the aircraft grounded over the pandemic stayed in boneyards: https://www.airplaneboneyards.com/grounded-airliners-in-storage-due-to-covid19-2020.htm

So the sleazier AI scammers turned old jet engines into terrible turbines. Specifically the old clapped out engines the airline industry didn't think worth it to refurbish:

It was high end then and I've upgraded the ram and disk, but modern laptops are only about 3 doublings better. (It beats current chromebooks.) The curve started bending down in 2010. Doesn't mean the doubling stopped, it means the period between each doubling increased (and/or needed WAY more investment each time).

@cmsdengl@mas.to The problem is there's an awful lot of financially motivated reasoning preventing people from getting good numbers about the state of the industry. Everybody knows Moore's Law is long dead but it can't be SEEN to be dead. This was from 2013: https://spectrum.ieee.org/the-status-of-moores-law-its-complicated A dozen years later, the current bubble is ritually beating a dead horse because there's still INVESTMENT to be had, if not working products delivered to customers in a cost-effective manner.

An LLM is basically lossy compression for the google cache. "Training" is the data compression. "Tokens" are decompressing a zoomed in fractal slice of morphed together training data, with lots of brownian motion jiggling to make it work and a ton of autocorrect applied to the jpeg artifacts. "Agents" feed the output back into the input a bunch of times (adding zillions of prompts to the decompressor's starting dictionary) to take lots of slices until the metrics add up to something sellable.
