Reminder that there are many, many more kind, creative, and caring people in the world than hateful and controlling ones. The latter are just much, much louder and are vastly over-represented in the psyche.

Good morning!
In May, for the first time, the US produced more electricity from solar than from coal. 💪👏😎

I am just a lay bystander but every time these companies announce some outlandish claim that their “AI” has done because it is “too advanced”… the lie and the grift seem obvious, but the exit strategy is not. For the individuals, I mean. Like, is the grift to just continue as a hype machine forever? What happens when the bubble bursts for poor Sam? Will the lies ever catch up to him? A lot of people are going to lose a lot of money and suffer as a result of these lies. Are they betting on the political environment to continue being so supportive of doublespeak for… the rest of their lives?
It feels like reality has to catch up at some point. 🤷♂️🤞

RE: @gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green
“Developers say the facility could eventually require up to 9 gigawatts of power. For perspective, Utah’s current statewide electricity demand typically peaks around 4 to 5 gigawatts. That means a single AI-focused campus could theoretically consume more power than the entire state currently uses.”
Gotta always appreciate Yahoo! News for doing the math for us! 💪🤔

20 years ago, I would read The NY Times every Sunday and feel smarter after doing it.
Today, I open the NYT home page and feel much dumber for having done so.

Good advice for all US voters, not just Californians.
Personally, I will no longer be voting by (USPS) mail; I’ll drop my ballot directly into a secure (locally controlled) drop box.

@younata@hachyderm.io Thanks for sharing these photos and observations. It brings back memories. Newton was the best. I wish we could have the Newton mental model and UI but with the benefit of modern compute power. It was so far ahead of its time.
You mentioned soups. Such a great concept for what was then called a PDA. Now we have apps, each its own walled garden. I guess some data can be accessible different places (like contacts) but on Newton it was seamless as I remember.
Also wow that backlight was a really distinctive color, eh? 😅

I know there’s a lot to be upset about but add to the list: an executive branch-controlled rogue agency building “copies” of essential government web services (like vote.gov) but loaded with trackers and the ability to feed whatever data you input straight to… whomever.

This is scary ... no matter whether I look this as a networking, web person, or a privacy/computer security person this is scary.
The damage to citizens and companies from this kind of exposure is beyond measure.
Trust in government is hard to establish. This will erase it. This turns maga fantasies about dark government into real concerns.

@phillmv@hachyderm.io @dangoodin@infosec.exchange I was going to say… one of my frustrations with “find my” is it assumes the earth is flat and doesn’t account for altitude.
This is a big problem in tall buildings and parking garages.
Maybe going up or down a level at a time would help get a better signal?
Good luck!

@inthehands@hachyderm.io i recently switched from Safari to Vivaldi as my primary browser and it’s soooo snappy! Mainly I switched for the tab management, which is heads and tails more helpful than safari. 🤷♂️
Thanks for the reminder to reevaluate one’s browser situation periodically. :)

More industry context for balcony solar offerings in the US. It’s only legal in Utah so far (but everybody’s doing it anyway), and lots of various players gearing up to sell you cheap-ish panels and kits.

@AccordionBruce@mastodon.social @alfredocg@mastodon.social @inthehands@hachyderm.io I tried Vivaldi prior to v8.0 and didn’t love it — clunky. But 8.0 is so much cleaner. Maybe because I took time to experiment with the themes and options, mostly turning off bits I didn’t like. Tab stacking is awesome. There is a feature for naming tab stacks (eg “finances” or “travel” or whatever). I love this feature but an open bug prevents it from working. They’re fixing it now.
Anyway works great on my M2 MacBook Air. I haven’t checked memory usage. But I don’t have 100s of tabs open either.

I have been gradually moving my various Notion stuff into NotePlan, which I love and use all the time. (Of course they are very different tools — it’s not 1 to 1. But NotePlan is crazy fast, all plain Markdown, no incessant prompts to try “AI” etc.)

Unfortunately most of them are trying to be like notion today, which is not useful for me. :(
