That invovlved spending the afternoon at their place alone while some script tried to recover deleted files from hard-drive. They had a DVD player and a lot of DVD so I play one. Then I start a second. Then it hit me. There was no ads before the main menu. Every DVD I had knew before had 15 minutes of ads for stufd not sold anymore.
Pretty sure they had a "smart" player, as in "skip the ads"

@meluzzy@woof.tech did you knew debian (very recently) enacted a policy that non-reproductible build are not accepted into testing?
The idea is simple, a given set of file always produce the same output, byte for byte, on the same architecture. This way, the build can be done on independent machine and compared with what debian offer. This can prevent malware from being inserted during the build.
Currently, a bit more than 98% of debian package are reproductible. The other may have built timestamp or such

@mntmn@mastodon.social I remember someone doing tape by hand using adhesive tape and magnetic powder then refining from there. I don't remember any open source tape reading. We are rewind is said to have not so great quality because they use the one remaining company selling tape reader and they are said to be so-so. I heard of a japanese company making a new element and the player going out of stock super fast.
I would love an open source deck :)

It was a old house with a verranda added later, so one of the inner door was an outer door, kinda heavy and sturdy.
Dog was introduced into the veranda, friend came in the kitchen through that door, trying to keep it closed.
Cat ran through the kitchen, barrel through the door and start attacking the dog. Clearly we had things backward :)

There are even a few framework for more modern language, I'm learning one for rust at the moment
