@glyph@mastodon.social The way to win this is to do what you're doing: show the specific harms, discuss ways to mitigate. Never end with "and it's your fault for using them, and we should ban it all." That's the conclusion you want people to eventually reach for themselves; only then will they actually believe it.

@bradr@infosec.exchange If you're into museums, the Vasa museum is quite cool. Skansen is a large park/outdoor museum kind of area that should be really pleasant when the weather is nice. Gamla Stan ("old town") has a lot of narrow alleys and restored medieval buildings, but also so many tourists and tourist shops you're unlikely to actually see much of it.

@glyph@mastodon.social Remember that smoking had been universally accepted for many decades, is highly physically addictive, and had as much of big business behind it as anything else has ever had. Even doctors endorsed it. And yet, even as regulation repeatedly failed, the slow drip of highlighting the personal and social detriments gradually eroded social acceptance to the point where regulation became inevitable.

I'm *really* surprised just how good this is as a not-quite #macro for insects. Magnification is ~1:4 but that's at almost 1.5 meters, so it's easy to get close without scaring them off. This is so much fun! Ants and similar-size animals are probably a bit too small, but anything the size of a bee is fine. 5/6 #photography #insects #bee #dragonfly

Unsurprisingly, it does birds *really* well. And shooting birds is really fun! I even got a bird guide, just so I can figure out what species they are. I'm surprised just how much I enjoy doing this. Will I end up a bird watcher? It's possible! 3/6 #photography #birding #birds

@bagder@mastodon.social Worth mentioning: In Sweden, having "industry vacation" in summer is a long tradition. Entire businesses may shut down for a few weeks, with phones/email manned only by a lonely summer intern. Summer is short, and it's the only way for most people to take vacation when it's actually warm and nice; Swedish employment law still guarantees 2(?) weeks of vacation during the summer months I believe.

The Japanese media cycle needs to consider the effects on people of their wall-to-wall coverage of the news of the moment. We're on our third day here in #hokkaido and my wife is terribly disappointed that we have yet to see a single bear.

@Heliograph@mastodon.au About 15-20% does. A sharp drop of supply of that magnitude will lead to much higher prices. So far we've been mostly insulated from it by countries oil reserves, but those are not infinite.

I got the lens because we're going to Shiretoko national park in Hokkaido this summer, and many animals won't let you get close enough for a wide lens. But now that I have it, what else could a lens like this be useful for? 2/6 #photography #lizard

Am I the only one to see the word "demoscene" and think "Huh, haven't heard about that geological period"? "In this stratum we see traces of the demoscene; when Earth was bombarded with flashing light and chip tunes".

RE: https://layer8.space/@f1veg0ldenrAyz/116943491601599016 So, so very much this! Yes, Arch is cool. Yes, Steam OS is built on Arch.Yes, Arch has the best documentation out there. But telling a beginner to use Arch is like telling someone moving out of their parent's house to learn to cook by catch, kill, dress and cook a wild pheasant, and expecting them to have a nice experience. Let people start with something like plain, non-weird Ubuntu. They can pick their own distro once they have the experience to know what to look for.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange Good general hot weather tips for clothing:

  • There's a reason loose fitting covering clothes are common in hot climates. You want to create your own portable shade. Loose pants, a linen shirt - something like that is great. If nothing else, at least wear a hat.

  • When you go out for school or work, bring a couple extra t-shirts. Being able to change into a fresh, dry t-shirt during the day does wonders for your comfort and for your mood.

People. I love shooting people, though I don't do it so much these days (I need to write something about that). This lens can do isolated portraits really well. But usually I want to get in much closer and be in the scene, not apart from it. 4/6 #photography

@tml@mementomori.social Is there enough travel happening that it can be vaguely justified? I guess the terrain also makes it pretty challenging (and expensive) to make the kind of largely flat, straight line that high speed trains need. Even Japan is only running actual high speed trains between high-density metropolitan areas much larger than either Oslo or Göteborg.

Get a Pico RP2350 and you have not one but two cores and lots of cool peripherals to play with. And unlike X86, RISCV is actually pleasant and quite readable. No. I'd not write any "real" code in assembler these days. But as a side project it's really fascinating.

@alanferrier@mastodon.scot Also, the dissolution of the union was ultimately peaceful, though it was apparently touch and go for a bit. Today we're getting along fine. After the Union there was a DMZ around the southernmost border. Years ago the Swedish army held exercises in the area and it was only after some historian pointed out it wasn't a great idea that the governments realized it was still in effect and everyone had forgotten about it. It's now abolished.

An especially if another family member is trying to do something at the same time.
