The issue with ditching reddit is how it tries to corral information - this is the "why" of reddit communities for the c-suite. So even if you no longer use the site there is a concentration of information which will bring you back to reddit.
A way to break the cycle and get the info out and free by your own rules is there though:

The point of forcing interaction onto devices is because apps can gather more data, as how the app interacts with the OS on the device is much more opaque.
As far as captchas are concerned I've been waiting for them to take over from pdfs as an attack vector for years.

I'm guessing like most networked services usually when someone says "Blah is down" it means packets can't arrive through their relayed area of the net either because of heavy traffic or because of technical issues ranging from somone tripping over a cable and loosening it to a Russian naval ship accidentally snagging an undersea cable.
