U.S. people: if you didn't realize it yet, you have been living through regime change for almost 2 years. You're living through a revolution being waged by an autocratic regime that is replacing the old democratic regime. "Regime" not being about an administration, but a system of government. This is what regime change looks like. For most people life goes on pretty much as normal but that'll only go on so long because so many things are being broken, so many past government functions are being cut off or deteriorating, and so many new government functions are designed to oppress, victimize, punish, and cement the new regime in place. What I'm saying is things are eventually going to get bad for most people in any number of ways and I think very few people have given this any thought at all. Don't ask me what to do about it. But you better be thinking about it. This is real. This is happening to your country right now. #fascism

I heard someone insulted as a "Trump taint sniffer" and I LOL'd but this is an insult I personally could never utter aloud, heavens. Still I found it hilarious.

Dennis Bushnell, former chief scientist at NASA Langley, was one of the most intriguing characters I had the pleasure to work with during my years in scientific and technical intelligence. He had many ideas, I'll leave it at that, but he was always so fun to talk with. I just looked him up and found that he retired a year after I did and died about a year ago. A sad loss. He was extremely driven and dedicated to his career and really enjoyed working with colleagues in the IC. Here is a slide deck of his musings which according to his Wikipedia page was produced "circa 2025" (which I'm not sure I believe because this was 2 years after his retirement and the year he died, he was 84 and would not have been using NASA template after retirement I think?) But anyway, to give you a sense of Dennis Bushnell ... https://www.metabunk.org/attachments/future-strategic-issues-and-warfare-pdf.3295/ RIP.

This morning I had a conversation with someone who, it turns out, has 5 Teslas, one of them a cybertruck. 😬 I noted that I felt the self driving software was, to me, beyond my level of safety risk, and she lit up like a Christmas tree, going on about all the ways gas cars and old, non-self-driving cars are so much less safe than Teslas. Like she really lit up, and all I could do was kind of giggle a little bit because I was watching someone so deeply imprinted and it was really fascinating.

@JeremyMallin@autistics.life Sensory issues are the worst part of it for me, which no doubt contribute to my horrible anxiety and high blood pressure. And they are what they are, nobody can just take this away from me much as I wish they could.

This is the kind of thing that helps you understand how stupid the majority of voters in Alabama really are. And they're about to put this moron in the goverrnor's office.

Many, myself included, have argued against voting for the worst offenders on this list even where it means a Republican takes the seat. A Republican victory costs the community one seat for one term. A worst-offender victory teaches the party’s consultant class, the Searchlights and Third Ways, that throwing transgender people under the bus is a winning strategy, and that lesson would be applied everywhere until the Democratic Party goes the way of Labour. One seat can be won back. A party cannot.
I hear that but my sense of emergency is such that I just can't see voting for any Republican at any level, anywhere. Or withholding my vote against a Republican and thereby enabling the Republican to hypothetically get the one vote they needed. I mean, what is the lesson in that? Some of these Dems are bad in one or two areas but Republicans are actual terrorists who want people to die. I feel an obligation to obstruct them. https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/the-guide-to-anti-trans-democrats

Any long series of #books you're reading over time? Maybe spaced out between a variety of other books? Here are a few series I've been reading over a span of months or even more than a year.
Foreigner series by CJ Cherryh (books)First Law and following books by Joe Abercrombie (audiobooks)Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchio (audiobooks)
I'm mostly caught up on other series from several favorite authors but always hoping for more in their universes...e.g., Alastair Reynolds, Peter F. Hamilton, Ann Leckie, Adrian Tchaikovsky. Occasionally re-read an Iain M. Banks Culture novel, I only have 3 left to re-read. Thinking about another go at Discworld.

Dear #audiobook narrators: Look up words you're not familiar with. Today's example: chitin isn't pronounced with a ch sound like chittering. It's a k sound followed by a long i. Say kite. Now say kite-in. Cripes, you guys are tiring.

Finished #audiobook The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie. Book 5 in The First Law series. This one didn't quite hold my interest as much as the earlier books, as it was basically a 23-hour long iron age melee gore fest with brief interludes of discussion about the meaninglessness and joy of war, depending on which character was doing the philosophizing, and some various plotting and scheming going on while Bayaz, the First of the Magi, again pulled puppet strings throughout. Steven Pacey as always was a masterful narrator.

She wanted to go to the AF Academy, a festering hotbed of christian extremism. I couldn't talk her out of it. But perhaps Trump did. If so, I have one single things to thank the thieving pedo for.

Amazon has owned IMDB for years. Why suddenly now merging accounts and automatically signing in Amazon customers? Fuck this. This is enshittification. There is a "Delete my account" option in IMDB but now I don't know if that will affect my Amazon account!

Spy cameras on Navy drones secretly sent data to China; Special forces boats set for use in planned Gulf missions were fitted with Chinese-made components
"The drones were supplied by a major British defence contractor, Kraken Technology Group, which sourced the cameras from a third party who had given assurances about their security.
An investigation into the drones revealed that the cameras were transmitting “heartbeat communications” – data to confirm they were online and functioning normally – to an IP address in China. The MoD insisted that there was no evidence that any sensitive data or systems had been sent abroad." #military #infosechttps://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/08/09/spy-cameras-on-navy-drones-secretly-sent-data-to-china/

@APBBlue@thepit.social Just the other day I had to discard some florets from a bunch of broccoli due to larvae cocooned in there. Never don't inspect the broccoli. Extra protein, yes...but I'd rather know for sure I'm not eating them.

Ok I've looked up some comments from other people on Ben Bova's writing and it appears he probably just is a sexist pig. I won't bother with any more of his books. I don't deserve this misogyny from a book.

@MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social I often wonder why all the transphobic rage is never about trans men. It's always a fear of trans women. Why? It must have something to do with oppressive beliefs about cis women and people have told me "misogyny" but that doesn't make it clear to me how trans men are simply erased from the issue. I need it spelled out like I'm a space alien I guess.

@johntimaeus@infosec.exchange It's a no-brainer. At least for the U.S. I hope / think DoD acquisitions regs have this covered, after a few mishaps several years back. Surprising that the Brits didn't.

@kimlockhartga@beige.party I still like several in various topics but have dropped quite a few in the area of talking heads in the past two years or so. I'm intentionally cutting myself off from hearing too much about what is happening, sorry folks but it's self care. I see enough already without listening to it as well.

@luckytran@mastodon.social The fascists live in a world of imagination that must conform to a particular lowbrow male aesthetic invoking violence even when pretending not to. For those who read "Rainbow's End" by Vernor Vinge: the fascists are a belief circle with this augmented reality overlay for the world that is mandatory for all members to use at all times.

Ok, I signed out of the unwanted IMDB account on that site. Then I checked whether I was still signed in on Amazon and found I had been signed out of Amazon. So that seems like a bad sign for what "Delete my account" means on the IMDB site. And they are not clear about it. That's horrible. There seems to be no way now to be signed in on Amazon and be signed out on IMDB. What a steaming pile of shit.
