I'm the opposite of a murderer: I unstab people to life with my anti-knife.

I work in #theater, used to work in #computers as a #programmer, sometimes I #AmWriting and I dabble in #TTRPGs.

When my ADHD allows it, I love to read. #Fantasy is my jam but I enjoy a good #Mystery.

#BLM, #ACAB, #ADHD, #LGBTQIAdjacent, #NoTerfs, #NaziPunksFuckOff, #LandBack, #Leftist, #DisabledRights, #EatTheRich, #TransRightsAreHumanRights, #SexWorkIsWork #ReproductiveRightsAreHumanRights

I #art too sometimes!

Once again for anyone interested, here's how to strip the DRM from ebooks you've purchased: 1) Go to Anna's Archive. 2) Find the book there. 3) Download it. Seriously. Calibre has gone to slop and all the other options are questionable at best. If you've purchased the book, pirate a DRM-free copy. Anyone who cares is a cop.

Once again I am begging for a fedi app which will let me hit a "I've seen this, please don't show it to me again after every single person I follow boosts it over the course of the next few days" button. Speaking to white people and white people only, you benefit from systems of racism which you will never dismantle. You will always be racist. Act against that. Don't waste your time trying to undo your own past racism; be proactive and undo your future racism. Fight the system with the targets of it rather than trying to absolve yourself by removing yourself from it.

What do I mean? You can't go back in time and give away your privilege. Instead, use whatever privilege you have to benefit the targets of racism. You can't stop being white. You can stop hurting others with your whiteness.

And you're not going to succeed all the time. You're going to continue to hurt non-white people with your whiteness. It's inevitable. You can't exist in the system without causing harm. Don't try. Instead, fight the system in favor of its targets. Use the benefits the system gives you to help its targets.

You will never get a "Congratulations, you are now 100% racism-free" certificate. Even if someone gave those out, you will never be free of it. Your actions are what matter. Fight the racist in your own head. Fight the racism in the system. Defend those who are targeted by it. That's all.

Anything you allow them to do to criminals, they will eventually do to you. I get that that's not a poem that well-meaning liberals can stand behind, but it's true. If you let them mistreat criminals, guess what, you're only a breath away from being a criminal. That's why, even if you don't have a moral objection to state-sponsored murder, you should have a practical one: if you let the state murder criminals, they'll try to murder you at some point. And I get that white people were hoping to run out the clock while the state was still murdering Black and brown people, but guess what fuckos, that ain't happening. We're in the firing line now. Shit is happening to us too. Which is why I'm always deeply disappointed when I see otherwise right-thinking people saying, "Rapists should be killed." You know whom the state likes to make into rapists? Queer people. Black people. But please, go ahead and hand the state a gun to put to the heads of queer and/or Black people. This goes beyond due process. This goes beyond cruel and unusual punishment. Anything, literally anything, you allow them to do to criminals will eventually be visited on you. I'd go so far as to say that anything you allow the state to do to *anyone* will be used against you. But tell me more about how pedophiles should be castrated. I'm sure no one other than legitimate pedophiles have ever been punished for pedophilia. Let me take a quick sip of my coffee while I peruse this book about history...

@sluttymayo Women's bikes are built that way because it keeps the bicycle from upskirting the lady astride it. Men's bicycles are built with an extra crosspiece because it was assumed that they needed more strength for riding more masculine roads than fragile ladies, who would naturally ride more sedately. I wish I were joking about this.

People genuinely don't know how thermostats work. My mother-in-law is convinced that turning the thermostat down makes it get colder faster. As if thermostats store some Platonic ideal of coldness which they let out in percentages based on how low you turn them down. I have given up trying to explain that that's not how they work, and in exchange the air conditioner is operating at whatever the Platonic ideal of coldness believes is 70°F.

No, sorry, I will not be using "compute" as a noun. "Computation" exists and isn't a techbro weasel word. I'm not judging you if you use it, nor am I saying that it's not good English. I'm not being prescriptive. I fully expect the noun "compute" to be Webster's word of the year next year and that's fine. I won't be using it. Sorry.

I've made a certain amount of hay over the fact that you can sing Because I Could Not Stop For Death by Emily Dickinson (indeed, many of her poems) to the tune of The Yellow Rose of Texas, and it's a delightful way to sing it, but I have been remiss in not mentioning more strongly the amazing fact that you can sing Because I Could Not Stop For Death to the tune of The House of the Rising Sun.

Just imagine, in your mental jukebox, The Animals, wailing away, singing Emily Dickinson.

There's your three good things for the day, or whatever.

I'm not going to argue, but if you go around talking about how Catholics have to obey the Pope, you clearly:

1) are not Catholic
2) don't know many Catholics
3) aren't even a mediocre student of Catholic history

Like half of Catholicism is stuff Catholics believe in direct defiance of dogma. Hell, the Pope couldn't speak infallibly on matters of dogma until almost the Twentieth Century, and there are still a lot of people who have issues with that. Obey the Pope? Which one?

Sorry, I really don't think a lot of people know just how silly Catholicism is. It takes itself incredibly seriously, but that doesn't stop it from being brain-shittingly stupid and goofy even as it's pants-shittingly terrifying how powerful such a stupid and goofy thing is and has been for way too long.

Catholicism is what happens when you let humans alone for too long. Jesus will come back and go, "Aw shit Dad, we've got Catholics." I say this as nicely as possible to the Catholics in the crowd, but you belong to Six Dogmas in Search of a Faith.

@justmichelle@beige.party It used to be that there were none. Then for a long time you had to use what was essentially remdesivir off-label and illegally, because it turns out FIP is a feline coronavirus. Depending on where you are, that may still be the situation, but I know some countries have legalized it for use with cats. When our cat got it, he was really old; most cats get it when they're kittens and in most cats it's asymptomatic. We had to go the black market route at the time. At first it was injections, which was not pleasant, but then we were able to get him pills, which was a lot easier. I believe pills are much more common now than they were, so hopefully you can get those. It is absolutely curable in most cats. The catch is that the medication is expensive. Extremely expensive. It may have become better in the five years since we had to buy it, but my understanding is that even if it's legal, it's still pricey. If your vet can't prescribe drugs, you may have to go black market too. There are Facebook groups to help with that. You'll need to get lab work done frequently as well to keep tabs on the progress of the treatment, and the treatment takes months. And the sooner you start the better. FIP can progress really quickly. That's my general knowledge. Please ask any specifics you might have. I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's terrifying and horrible. But you're not alone.

To be or not to be?

You know, that really is the big question, right: whether one should think that it's better to go along getting fucked by life or whether the best way to fight back against life, outrageous as it is, is to end it? That's... Heavy. Death.

We don't like thinking about death, but really, is it anything more than going to sleep? A really good sleep, right? Ending all the pain, the suffering? Because life, as the Buddha says, is suffering. Hell, getting past that, getting over pain... who wouldn't wish that? That's better than sex, right?

So why not just slip off to sleep? Why not just dream into oblivion? To dream. Fuck. That's the issue, right? Is death a nightmare?

And so we keep on living. We keep on trudging forward because we're scared little children looking ahead to a sleep which might not be sweet. Why else? Why the fuck would you go on putting up with even the suffering that is natural with the simple passage of time, right? And that's not factoring in oppression, assholes, heartbreak, dealing with the law, and goddamn it, how good things keep happening to bad people. Why put up with that shit when you can stop life so simply? Who wouldn't, except...

Death. Nobody knows. Nobody comes back to tell us, and that's probably for the best. We're human. We fear the unknown. We fear change. We would rather suffer than jump head-first into dark water.

Fucking humans. We sit and we think these things and meanwhile there's shit to do which must be done. And we let our thoughts run in circles and our fears overshadow all of our lives until we're paralyzed, and then we die anyway.

I don't really have a button to end this on. Someone's coming in. Closing for now.

@chloechloechloe Racism. Not whiteness. Whiteness is a quality one has that you can't stop being. If the world magically changed tomorrow, as you suggest, then no one would care. Until then, assuming you're white, you benefit from whiteness because of racist systems and your participation in them. You're looking for an out. You're trying to remove your racism through magical thinking. That's the opposite of what you need to do, which is to act against racism inside and outside yourself. Fighting the racist in your own head doesn't mean making up a magical world where there is no racism and you aren't a beneficiary of it. It means recognizing your internal biases and privileges and acting against the harms those cause, ideally by using your privilege to help those who are targeted by racism. You're arguing that racism isn't inherent in us as humans. Fine. We don't live in a world where that makes a damn bit of difference. Your racist biases, as a white person, are inculcated in you, and your participation in systems which privilege you for your whiteness is racist. It's not "original sin." Original sin is a religious doctrine that blames all humans for two humans' fall from grace. This isn't some abstract idea of sin. You benefit from racist systems if you're white. Full stop. Fight against that. I'm just a white dude. I'm not an expert. I'm just telling you what I've learned from experts, which is that being sorry for your racism or trying to remove your culpability isn't the solution to racism. It's what we as white people are tempted to do, yes, but targets of racism don't need us to be free of some magical original sin. They need us to fight against and tear down racist systems that continue to privilege us even if we personally "aren't racist." As with so many things, "racist" isn't a thing you are. It's a thing you do. Stop worrying about whether you "are" racist. Stop trying to logic your way out of it. Worry about what you do. Fight your biases and privilege. Fight racist systems. Beyond that, I have no advice for you, metaphysical or otherwise.

@chloechloechloe Racism isn't a quality one has. It's a result of actions and systems. If we woke up tomorrow and race no longer existed, the world would still be the result of racist systems and white supremacy. I'm not sure what your thought experiment is intended to do other than make you feel better about the fact that racism exists. You can't think your way out of racist systems any more than you can think your way out of any other result of the world existing as it has and does.
