Joined mastodonapp.uk back in Nov 2022. I have a 'backup' a/c on mendeddrum.org.
Oldish bloke, got to retirement age in 2024. Now retired, due to the old line about "when it stops being fun, stop doing it".
Anyway, old-school coder. I've worked with everything from punch-cards to Perl, via machine language and microcode, C, C++, SQL, etc, etc. Now a happy Linux user on Garuda.
Getting more radically 'left' as I get older. I despise all racists, homophobes, Nazis, etc.
Sent to me from The Other Place. I did actually laugh out loud.

Certainly in the UK this is true.
US only really 'helped' the UK in WWII using the Lend-Lease Act, and we finally finished paying that stuff back in 2006[1].
What seems clear is that the US rarely does anything which is not directly in their own interests.
Any UK politician today who banged on about "The Special Relationship" between UK and US, would be laughed at. Really.
Now all the boomers who remember those times are dying off, it's almost 'helpful' that the orange shit-gibbon has reminded an entire new set of generations about what the US is all about.
Naturally, opinions vary. Bracing myself for USAians telling me that without them, I'd be speaking German, or some such.
Saw this in a vid just now and laughed out loud!
Oh Goddess. I just found a 'story idea' in my notes, that either I stole from someone, or came up with myself when 'refreshed', no idea. I reckon it could fly, with a lot of work. Unless someone here steals it first, which would also be fine!
Voyager has crossed into the Oort Cloud in, what 2300yrs or so.
In the meantime, some lovely passing aliens have found her and given her a new power supply so she can focus her antenna and transmit to us again.
She contacts Earth. Hilarity ensues.
OK, OK. Rather silly, and fairly brief, 'shaggy dog story' which was forwarded to me from TOP (so no attribution), sorry about that.
Five Germans in an Audi Quattro arrive at the Italian border. The Italian Customs Officer stops them and tells them "It'sa illegala to putta 5 people in a Quattro."
"Vot do you mean it's illegal?" asks the German driver.
"Quattro meansa four" replies the Italian official.
"Quattro is just ze name of ze automobile" the German says unbelievingly. "Look at ze dam papers: ze car is designed to karry 5 persons"
"You canta pulla thata one on me!" replies the Italian customs officer. "Quattro meansa four. You have five-a people ina your car and you are thereforea breaking tha law."
The German driver replies angrily, "You idiot! Call your zupervisor over. I vant to speak to someone viz more intelligence!"
"Sorry" responds the Italian officer, "He can'ta come. He'sa busy witha 2 guys in a Fiat Uno.
I recall my first reading of _Neuromancer_ a gazillion years ago, and thinking "I just need to upload myself into that and I could do anything!"
Now, the subscription fees would be stupid.
Nah. I'll just check out when it's my turn. "Come in number 4, your time is up!"
I'm absolutely sure there are a zillion learned articles about all of this in Philosophy, or Neurophysiology, or whatever, but(!)...
When I'm having that internal argument with myself about this thing that I may or may not 'want' to do, *who* is the 'me' that is arguing with the other me, and *who* is the 'other' one? I mean, all these voices presumably originate from this big ball of fat inside my skull. Are there, like, loads of them in there?!
(And if, perchance, you happen to be an expert in this exact field, I (we?!) shall brace for a long thread!)
Did I already do this one? If so, I apologise.
But definitely tonight's mood.
