60+ three-time immigrant, whose life in Africa, Australia, and America, work with industrial and medical quality & safety, and obsession with mortality data and accidents, results in morbid short stories.

I write fiction #shortstories that are like “Final Destination” meets “The Monkey’s Paw” (W. W. Jacobs, 1902). A little bit Poe, a touch of Dahl, and a hint of Gorey.

When I am not writing, I do bare-bow archery, walk a husky, and pick up other people's litter.

Hey @alice@lgbtqia.space @koalou@lgbtqia.space @h3mmy@lgbtqia.space May I ask one question - would it work if I make the hyena trickster god in "Mightily Milly", an ENBY? I started with Hyena as female, but does it work better if Hyena is ENBY?

What I've found over nearly seven decades of living on this mudball, is that what someone looks like is far less interesting and indicative of "who they are" than their beliefs, attitudes, principles, and behavior. You can see the most gorgeous woman or man, and find out they are nasty to wait staff and underlings, and create toxic environments. They can be shorter than the norm, have scraggly hair, and have a broken voice, and be absolute darlings If I were to peg ONE attribute, it's kindness

OK, I have a request of everyone. I want you all to report these arsehole channels and influencers who are making rage-bait videos on YouTube that are designed to make men angry with women. They steal and edit clips by women and frame them with narration that makes it clear to insecure men what to get angry about. This isn't just harmless gouging of the men, because this shit leads directly to women in the ER, ICU, and morgue I will drop images here with examples #women #abuse

#WritersCoffeeClub 7/27 What's a writerly growing pain you're experiencing right now?

Getting off Google and Microsoft for writing, ditching GoodReads, and struggking through the learning curve of Libre Office and Collabora.

It's been a thing

Hey, human

Indie #writer here

No, I am not going to ask you to buy my #books - even though that would be grand
I'm also not going to ask you to review my books - ditto

What I AM begging you to do is glance at my stuff, and bump any friend who you think would like this kind of writing.

If your friend likes short and tight stories about murder and misadventure: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-machinery-of-fate

If they prefer novels with endearing but murderous ladies: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-book-of-joy-8

Please boost

I also just want to postscript here that in the history of the species (except maybe during Bacchanalia) it has never been easier to meet, befriend, and date women. So many social barriers have dissolved, women have more to share and are eager to do so, and all a guy needs to do is be a person and not be a fascist. Like just don't be a dick

@sundogplanets If it weren't for the various categories of pollution and risk here, I would be 100% behind Sam and others blowing investor's fortunes on silly parlor games. Like sure, go put a data center in orbit where a service call to replace a pump will cost a million bucks, and sure, expose your computers to radiation, and please, by all means find out the hard way that space is cold, but has very low specific heat capacity. Be my guest, play stupid games. But sadly, the pollution costs

I have known a few psychopaths. Some by virtue of work or research for books, and some by accident.

A few things stand out to me

1. They are very unlike Hollywood or common depictions
2. There is something very fucked with the diagnostic criteria, and it's painfully obvious that if anything psychopathy is a syndrome comprsing a cluster of different things
3. Most of them are invisible
4. Some of them are extraordinarily violent and aggressive with scant regard for outcomes
5. Some aren't

@phocks TBH, as long as monied people are buying residential property as investments, prices and inequality will be driven up. Tons of well-heeled Australians who have a second, third, or fourth "investment" house are surprised to learn that their kids can't afford to buy anywhere near them, if at all. Once in that investment mindset, they also can't easily pull out and will fight any effort to reduce scarcity or pricing

@susankayequinn@wandering.shop I hear you. The money is certainly not my *primary* motive, and being a bestselling author also holds little interest. However, reaching the kind of reader who is eager to consume dark short stories about murder and misadventure, or novels about delightfully lethal female psychopaths, is tricky unless one goes wide I don't fancy myself as a brilliant writer, but I do craft stories that are enjoyable to a specific narrow audience

@mattly I think Hanlon's Razor is a reasonable rule of thumb for one-off events with no frequency history. Because the razor is meant for informal and a posteriori use, we can also use tools like control charts to ask whether there is a trend, a run, or upper/lower control limit being exceeded, etc. If there is a progression or history of events, I think you can safely put aside Hanlon's Razor, and say, wait a minute, we've been here before

Dear #women

Do you modulate your voice higher or lower when you are with men?

Like, does your voice rise around men and get more "girly" or do you maybe go down and fry around men?
