Teams is useful as a shared irritation. Somebody shows up late? "Teams refused to let me join". Somebody forgets to turn on their mic? "Teams bolloxed my audio". Somebody didn't prepare their work? "Teams won't let me share my screen". Somebody is out partying instead of working from home? "Sorry, for some reason my WiFi crashes when I join a meeting".
These are actual daily bugs in #Teams , but it makes other grievances tolerable.
Seriously though: stop forcing people to use this hot garbage
I'm not against AI per se. For generating graphics and code I've seen some pretty impressive and useful things. I'm allergic to "you'll be left behind" zealots though.
I don't think the productivity bottleneck in the average organisation is in writing code, but in human alignment, code reviews and delivery pipelines.
There is also a dire need for regulation to ensure LLM's aren't based on theft and don't compete with living beings with regard to energy and water consumption.

It's quite amazing what developers can now do with AI-code assistants. And every time one shows me some impressive stuff, they end with "but in the end it never gets it quite right and I feel like I spend more time guiding and correcting it than had I done everything myself in the first place."

@moreentropy @steely_glint That said, I do think there's still a chance to use the learnings to get to a responsible, sustainable, ethical, compliant version of this technology. I've seen it do amazing things and I've seen it fail spectacularly. Throwing more money at the unscrupulous as they enshittify this is not the way forward; regulation is.

I have an enum with 5 values and when I type an MyEnum.valueOf(... IntelliJ suggests a text with typos in them, instead of predefined Enum values, consistently.
This used to work just fine, yet now it's broken, and it looks like it's an #aiagent that is poorly predicting text instead of just inspecting the actual code.
I understand the appeal of #AI, but this is not the way.

My experience is that by the time I've wrestled my way past the chatbot gatekeeper to speak to an actual human being, that human being gets to deal with the version of me that has lost all patience, puts up with 0 shit anymore and posits demands rather than engaging in friendly dialogue to establish a mutual understanding of my needs.

Imho the best we can do is push for regulation, push back on AI-slop, theft and delusions of vibecoding grandeur and focus on the use of ethical and durable alternatives, like StarCoder2 / The Stack V2 combined with local fit-for-purpose tooling. Once compliant offering gets traction, it's more likely to siphon attention (and money) away from the unsustainable big tech flavors.

Looking at value, I'd say the summum is freeing people's time to focus on family, society and self expression. It's odd that whenever the news talks about the success of AI, it's people getting fired from their jobs and consequently not being able to afford any of that. That doesn't sound like success at all.

@steely_glint @moreentropy This has been a persistent misinterpretation of both waterfall and agile. The waterfall problem is a lack of feedback loops and an inability to adapt at the budget and management level. The myth that you don't have to care about specifications in agile is a shortsighted read of "working software over comprehensive documentation". Those in the DDD-community have always known this, and it's interesting to see how they are using AI.
