I write code for a living and words for my sins. Among other things, I care about labour organizing, abolition, decolonization, accessibility, and public interest technology. When I’m not at work, I read, climb, and cycle through various vaguely creative hobbies. Voracious collector of memes and shitposts; occasional contributor to the same.

Trans rights are human rights and abortion is health care.

I also run @showuptoronto@cosocial.ca.

what the—and I cannot stress this enough—absolute fuck:

"...sensitive and personal footage captured by [Meta Smart Glasses]—including people going to the bathroom, getting dressed, and having sex—is being reviewed by contractors who see all of it uncensored."

my phone is in grayscale most of the time but sometimes I turn it off to take a photo or something and forget to turn it back on and it’s truly humiliating how much more stuck on it and drawn to it I am immediately, half a million years of evolution and I still just want the pretty shiny treasure

I know bosses are bosses everywhere but there's something particularly silly about wikipedia specifically being like "nah" when offered the opportunity to take the side of collective action https://cwa-union.org/news/releases/wiki-workers-united-uscwa-will-file-nlrb-election-after-wikimedia-foundation-declines

This week's Show Up Toronto is a little late, due to life, but we've got a fun little write-up of the Billy Bishop saga and a ton of organizing and mobilizing events around the city as per usual! Thanks to @ruhee@phire.place for the photo!! https://buttondown.com/showup/archive/show-up-toronto-july-30-2026/ #toronto

Programming Still Sucks. — Writing

Sorry Peter. — I'm at a birthday party, and while most people here also work in tech, there's always a Guy with a Real Job. You know, a physical job, building some or other thing people need. And this Guy always asks some variant of the same question: aren't you worried AI is taking your job? I glance around and see a few faces turning around toward us, rolling their eyes ever so slightly before returning to their previous conversation. Yes, this question again.

I read a lot of newsletters and whatever about the tech industry and finance and labour and it consistently annoys me that the majority of people writing about this loudly are dudes. recommend me your favourite tech/finance/work blogs and newsletters written by not dudes please!! assume I know none of the obvious ones, I’d rather get redundant recs than miss a good one

hey #TOPoli pals, I found out a local vintage store I like is blaming a massive revenue drop and the subsequent closure of their bathurst location to the bus lanes getting rid of parking spots. before I write them off forever, has there been any actual study of the local retail impact?

Toronto! I saw Take Rimbaud tonight and REALLY enjoyed it - it’s about queer longing and the role of art in revolution and hegemony and love, it’s funny and tender, it took big swings and not all of them land but a LOT did. It‘s on till the 23rd, go see it!! https://buddiesinbadtimes.com/show/take-rimbaud/

@oisin Honestly, Toronto is kind of a dream city for this. I tell people all the time it can be an underwhelming place to visit because it mostly shines as a great place to LIVE. I’d stay near Kensington or Trinity Bellwoods, both super walkable neighbourhoods with interesting stores. The Junction triangle has a ton of breweries in easy walking, the AGO and ROM are great headline museums but there’s a ton of smaller ones around, High Park is our central park but with capybaras.

I have SO MANY FEELINGS about this interview with John Samson Fellows and why he doesn’t want to make music professionally anymore, incredibly grateful to Luke Ottenhof for undertaking such a thoughtful piece and offering a glimpse into John’s art in whatever form it takes https://hazlitt.net/longreads/lay-it-down

@oisin Ronnie’s Local is the dive’s dive (derogatory), Sneaky Dee’s is the iconic Toronto dive (complimentary), Communist Daughter is the hidden gem with live music on Saturdays and record nights on Mondays. Pandemonium in the Junction is my platonic ideal of a used bookstore, the Beguiling has great comics, the Bathurst Local is a great unpretentious wine bar with a karaoke lounge. Bar Hop has a great rooftop patio and great beer selection, Bellwoods has a great patio and food.

@eevee @glyph I think they lost a ton of market share in the early to mid 2010s due to performance issues at a time when Google still had a TON of goodwill and Chrome felt snappy and fast, and a lot of SV-based early adopters who are culturally influential if not big in numbers switched and told their friends to as well. Quantum in 2017 fixed perf at the cost of limiting the plugin ecosystem, which pissed off power users without getting a lot of people back.

@glyph I got frustrated by how hard it is to see Firefox data compared against the Chrome backdrop in Statcounter so I grabbed the CSV, and it kind of looks like there were maybe two big anomalous bumps (ad campaigns?) that temporarily reversed the decline, which looks like it might've accelerated a bit in 2020 when the big layoff that fucked over Servo/MDN happened, which was my other pet theory (full disclosure: I worked there from 2019-2021 but not *anywhere* near the browser)
