@killyourfm During corona I naïvely bought a macbook pro M1 with 2Tb storage because my family photo archive had gone ferral and everything pointed to iphotos being the solution & it was fabulous. For the first time ever I could make yearly albums for relatives going back a decade... then I saw how it worked. 300 Gb raw data uploaded was DUPLICATED into a crazy "library" file.... & my insanely large ssd was instantly too small -> the insanity of having to push to the iCloud to free space! f*"& 🍏

@njion Yup. If you buy one for a few hundred euros then to keep it working I had to pay about 100 euros every 2 years to keep it running OK and eventually gave up on it and got a casio F-91W .... wow.. what a watch.. it tells the time for ever.

@ChrisMayLA6 The DE healthcare system breaks even every year. The system uses computers & billing. The bills are paid behind the scenes by the institution that has agreed or is obliged by law to pay for it. The institutions get their money from contributions. The contributions come from employers & employees. It works. When a health system breaks even it acts as a long-term functioning insurance system. That is not politics. It is boring, rational governance. Not suited to the UK? Might agree.

@dystroy@mastodon.dystroy.org Rust has excellent error messages and I fear that this makes it able to be coded particularly well using LLMs. Therefore I would be rather looking into which languages are being hired currently. I would have thought rust would be top of the list nevertheless. Graduates in the UK currently have to apply to hundreds of positions and might not get one, let alone even a letter of acknowledgement. I know that does not help, but best of luck.

I have problems with update of flakes which causes massive massive issues but also can resolve a current issue. The pinning of the solution to fixed hashes and inputs might get around the problem that an update kills the thing... just wondering.

I do not want a PhD in VIM nano vscode or any other editor just to make a copy and paste work. I want it to works whatever the layout. I once sat down to start learning python and copied some code from elsewhere into the file... needless to say... absolute no-go... spaces all wrong. Since then, RUST or AIs seem to be able to cope though.

I never ever use third party tools from outside the #nixOS package repo unless I can inspect the code....so I am perplexed 🤔. Am I the only one that thinks like this? Have I missed something? @jnsgruk @ubuntu = a mini nix store for each app ? One reason I quit Ubuntu was that firefox snap was messing up my computer. I had to kill multiple rogue background snaps all the time and firefox updates every day practically and after going to mint I got nixed.
