🇳🇱 The Netherlands Built a Nix-Based Linux Desktop Because Microsoft Cut Off the ICC
「 All of DAWO's code is hosted on a Forgejo instance, with a separate Codeberg instance acting as the entry point for contributors. And, to answer the question asked earlier, NixOS was chosen because it is a Dutch project, with no company owning or controlling its development 」

After #France started to move to #NixOS, the origin country of NixOS is now also running pilots of it.
The #Government of the #Netherlands is testing and working on rolling out NixOS.

there's already the flake by Ap6661 which i used as a reference implementation, mine is just a bit different. no offline and versions by commit instead of all versions included
i just updated it to B_T13
chatgpt can't generate #NixOS configuration. When it should put stuff into overrides it just throws them into systemPackages instead.
But when you then follow up and mention override it does it perfectly...
Hi All
Probably u might have seen me in #Nix and #NixOS communities. I'm planning to start content creations covering nix for newbies to nix for experienced users as well. I'm planning first on posting a general Bird's eye view video covering all the possibilities and mental model of nix. And probably a separate video for NixOS other projects.
And then slowly I'll explain small to big stuffs and we'll do a lot of projects etc together I guess on the way.

NixOS continues to blow my mind. We don't deserve this OS. It's from the future.

I may have accidentally booped a #NixOS onto a Jelly Star thanks to all the information available on the #postmarketos wiki. What do you think of that, Clippy?

Ported U-Boot with EFI support to the Unihertz Jelly Star tonight, NixOS next. Nix Brick for scale!

The fellowship of #omarchy are actually *nixing* the OS in the future (I think AI suggested that, while I was just thinking about distrojumping).
I'm no expert but it seems a good development. Or is it bad for #nix?

"Your executable is a SQLite database"
This is wild and cool. #SQLite as a Linux executable format, and container of a #NixOS system closure.

Remember when I said my DR setup should have me back up in 20-30 minutes? Yeah. About that. Turns out a backup job can run clean every single night for months and still not actually be backing up what you think it is. So here's what I actually found out the hard way replacing nixos2's dying hardware. Feel free to cue the old "The more you know" clip.

So I realised I forgot to update on the Nix OS situation. Unfortunately, I ended up running out of time to get things working properly, I really needed Blender in particular this week for work for some complex scenes, and it just wasn't looking like I'd be able to get it workable in time, so I begrudgingly went back to Windows.
I'm not giving up though, this is just temporary, when I get some spare time I'm planning to create a partition for Nix OS and keep tinkering, and I have my config backed up so I can just pick up where I left off. I also successfully installed Nix OS on an older laptop I had laying around which doesn't have any Nvidia hardware, and it went super smoothly and I'm still really loving the OS there.
for those interested in what was happening, when I made this post, the issue was actually something really simple, I just misread the wiki's instructions about how to set up Nvidia Prime lol. My laptop has an integrated intel GPU and the main Nvidia one, and NixOS was exclusively using the intel one. Turns out I just had my config set to Offload mode, but didn't specify anything could use the Nvidia GPU.
At first I swapped it to synced mode but this caused really bad jittering and flickering on the screen. Reverse Sync had the same issue, so I went back to offload mode and actually specified which programs were to use the Nvidia GPU this time, and ran into a bunch of new problems.
Steam and all of the games I tried worked wonderfully right out of the gate, so did Davinci, which I was a bit surprised about (though I didn't do anything particularly heavy to test it) so there was progress at least. Blender and OBS though were still mostly unusable. Blender was running slower than before with everything except rendering, and it still couldn't see the Nvidia GPU as an option for CUDA rendering in the system settings (Now that I'm back on windows I noticed that apparently the intel gpu is also CUDA compatible, but it couldn't see that either). OBS could no longer record my screen or specific windows at all either.
Like I said, I kind of just ran out of time. My plan B had actually been to install Pop_OS if Nix didn't work out since I had gotten that to work on an older PC with a Nvidia GPU in the past, but I couldn't get my drawing tablet to work with it, so I ended up just biting the bullet and going back to windows (I miss not having ads everywhere 😭). There were a bunch of other issues that I was also running into with NixOS as well (e.g. every few startups my wifi card stopped being recognised and the laptop was generally running very hot even when it wasn't doing anything), so for now I'm back on Windows, but I'm keen to keep trying to work this out once I have more free time.

Is anyone in the home lab community running NixOS on a Raspberry Pi 4B (8GB), and could share your frustrations or cautionary tales?
I am seriously considering dividing into that. I don't need convincing. At this point I just need to know where the rakes and the skeletons are. So basically just give me the dirt. 😄

Good news for the #ArchLinux users among you: #Censor is now available in the #Arch User Repository (#AUR): https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/censor Your feedback is welcome!
Already since version 0.3.0, Censor has been packed for #NixOS: https://search.nixos.org/packages?channel=unstable&show=censor Thanks to @pi_crew@social.project-insanity.org for maintaining!
