@cwebber@social.coop @LordCaramac@discordian.social @bkuhn@fedi.copyleft.org @richardfontana@mastodon.social Sadly it will be years before we have an answer re copyright and we can't wait for that. Outlining usage in the meantime is the best we can do, in case we need to do something with that later. We know proprietary software companies are using these tools extensively, so this is in effect a mutually assured destruction situation. While we wait, we should make sure that we are pushing freedom on all other axes, since they won't do that part.

@lumi @mastodonmigration @novalis @bkuhn Yes, we should resist it, but that doesn't always mean rejecting it outright. Before I had a child, I never used my car for intra-town transport - I always walked or biked. But time and family obligations changed. We absolutely still go against proprietary software, but we should also push toward the end goal: more personal freedom/autonomy. If people can get that using GenAI/LLMs, we should recognize and seek to improve that.

@lumi Yes, I agree with @novalis here - GenAI has cases where it is useful and we should let it (very carefully!) be used for those. I live in a small town and I do appreciate how a car makes it easier for me to interface with the rest of the world. It is certainly possible for me to go places outside my town without a car, but it takes about 4-5 times as long, limiting what I'd do. It's similar for people who haven't made software before.
