:apple: A much faster Mac on a Microcontroller.

Emulating older computers on microcontrollers has been a staple of retrocomputing for many years now, with most 8-bit and some 16-bit machines available on Atmel, ARM or ESP32 platforms. But there’s always been a horsepower limit, a point beyond which a microcontroller is no longer enough, and a “proper” computer is needed.

⁉️One of those barriers now appears to have been broken, as microcontroller-based emulation moves into the 32-bit era. [Amcchord] has the Basilisk II emulator ported to the ESP32-P4 platform, providing a 68040 Mac able to run OS8.1. This early-1990s-spec machine might not seem like much in 2026, but it represents a major step forward.⁉️

:freebsd: FreeBSD 15 with KDE and Wayland on a Laptop.

More and more people discover that FreeBSD’s desktop/laptop support keeps improving rapidly. FreeBSD 15 really feels like a breakthrough release.

⁉️With KDE Plasma 6.x, you can leave legacy X11 behind and use Wayland on FreeBSD now, and support for Intel Wi-Fi chips has greatly expanded. Apparently, battery life has improved as well, which is one of the hardest problems to solve for an operating system, especially with the wide variety of hardware combinations in the x86 world.⁉️

👾It’s always been my favorite operating system for servers, but with the arrival of pkgbase, massive improvements to the LinuxKPI drivers, and the launch of the Laptop Support and Usability Project, it’s become my primary desktop, too.👾

:amigacheck: Amiga Programming with AmiBlitz.

Having owned an Amiga microcomputer is apparently a little bit like having shaken hands with Shoggoth: no one can escape unchanged from the experience.

⁉️Thirty-two years on, [Neil] at The Retro Collective remains haunted by the memories — specifically, the memory of BlitzBasic 2, an Amiga-specific programming language he never found the time to use. What better time to make a game for the Amiga than the year 2026 of the common era?⁉️

:raspberrypi: SSH over USB on a Raspberry Pi.

Setting up access to a headless Raspberry Pi is one of those tasks that should take a few minutes, but for some reason always seems to take much longer. The most common method is to configure Wi-Fi access and an SSH service on the Pi before starting it, which can go wrong in many different ways. I’ve, for example, recently spent a few hours failing to set up a headless Pi on a network secured with Protected EAP, and was eventually driven to using SSH over Bluetooth.

⁉️This could thankfully soon be a thing of the past, as [Paul Oberosler] developed a package for SSH over USB, which is included in the latest versions of Raspberry Pi OS.⁉️

:raspberrypi: Putting KDE on Raspberry Pi OS simpler than expected.

Raspberry Pi boards are no longer constrained – these days, you can get a quad-core board with 8 or 16GB of RAM to go around, equip it with a heatsink, and get a decently comfortable shop/desk/kitchen computer with GPIOs, cameras, speedy networking, maybe even NVMe and all the wireless you’d expect.

⁉️In case you ever idly wondered about giving your speedy Pi a better UI, [Luc]/[lucstechblog] wants to remind you that setting up KDE on your Raspberry OS install is dead simple and requires only about a dozen commandline steps.⁉️

:apple_inc: :linux: Homebrew 6.0 released with new Security Mechanism, Linux Sandbox and more.

The Homebrew team has released version 6.0 of this popular open-source package manager for macOS and Linux, with a new mechanism for trusting packages and support for sandboxing on Linux, to align with existing sandboxing on macOS.

https://brew.sh/2026/06/11/homebrew-6.0.0/

Homebrew 6.0 introduces tap trust, a "tap" being a collection of formulae, casks [a package of pre-compiled binaries] and commands which usually reside in a Git repository. The tool trusts official Homebrew taps by default, but requires an explicit agreement before it will trust third-party taps [which can include arbitrary Ruby code] before they install or run any code.

Disney’s Bipedal, BDX-Series Droid gets the DIY Treatment.

[Antoine Pirrone] & [Grégoire Passault] are making a DIY miniature re-imagining of Disney’s BDX droid design, and while it’s still early, there is definitely a lot of progress to see. Known as the Open Duck Mini v2 and coming in at a little over 40 cm tall, the project is expected to have a total cost of around 400$.

WhatsApp says it blocked Pegasus Spyware Campaign linked to NSO.

The new action follows a major legal win for WhatsApp and parent company Meta in their long running case against NSO. The court had already barred NSO from targeting WhatsApp or its users after finding that the company violated federal and state hacking laws in connection with a 2019 attack on roughly 1,400 users.

This time, WhatsApp says the activity did not rely on a unknown WhatsApp vulnerability. The company said it investigated user reports and found spear phishing efforts that tried to push people toward malicious external websites. In plain terms, the aim was to get a person to click a link outside WhatsApp, a method similar to earlier one click campaigns associated with NSO.

⁉️In a press release, WhatsApp said it also found and removed test accounts and groups created on its platform. The company has published three domains it says were used in the activity so researchers, companies and users can check whether they were contacted through WhatsApp, text message, email or another channel.⁉️

Building a Metal 3D Printer with a Laser Welder.

The development of cheaper, more powerful lasers has always been a cause for excitement among hackers, and fiber lasers are no exception. One of the newer tools they’ve enabled is the laser welder, which can be used to weld, cut through metal or clean off surfaces. Or, as [Cranktown City] demonstrated, you can use one to build a metal 3D printer.

Lego Typewriter writes Plastic Letters.

Some time ago, Lego released a beautiful [and somewhat pricey] typewriter set that was modeled after one used by company founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen. To the disappointment of some, it doesn’t actually work — you can’t really write a letter with it. [Koenkun Bricks] decided to rectify this with their own functional design.

TMS9900-based Home Brew Computer.

[Usagi Electric] is known for minicomputers, but in a recent video, he shows off his TMS9900-based homebrew computer. The TMS9900 CPU was an early 16-bit CPU famously used in the old TI-99/4A computer, but as the video points out, it wasn’t put to particularly good use in the TI-99/4A because its RAM was hidden behind an inefficient interface and it didn’t leverage its 16-bit address space.

:microsoft: Microsoft Warns of WhatsApp Attachments spreading Backdoor on Windows PCs.

👾The scam arrives as a simple message on WhatsApp, but it carries a hidden danger designed to take over personal computers.👾

According to Microsoft researchers, the trouble starts when a user receives a message containing a Visual Basic Script [VBS] file. For your information, this is a type of computer code that can run various tasks on Windows. If a person clicks on this file, it starts a chain reaction that allows hackers to control the computer from a distance.

⁉️“The campaign relies on a combination of social engineering and living-off-the-land techniques. By combining trusted platforms with legitimate tools, the threat actor reduces visibility and increases the likelihood of successful execution,” researchers wrote in Microsoft’s blog post.⁉️

:github: GitHub jumps on the Bandwagon and will use your Data to train AI for Bug Detection to expand Security Coverage.

GitHub is adopting AI-based scanning for its Code Security tool to expand vulnerability detections beyond the CodeQL static analysis and cover more languages and frameworks. The developer collaboration platform says that the move is meant to uncover security issues "in areas that are difficult to support with traditional static analysis alone."

CodeQL will continue to provide deep semantic analysis for supported languages, while AI detections will provide broader coverage for Shell/Bash, Dockerfiles, Terraform, PHP and other ecosystems.

:terminal: BASIC on a Calculator again.

I’m always amused that we can run emulations or virtual copies of yesterday’s computers on our modern computers. In fact, there is so much power at your command now that you can run, say, a DOS emulator on a Windows virtual machine under Linux, even though the resulting DOS prompt would probably still perform better than an old 4.77 MHz PC.

⁉️Remember when you could get calculators that ran BASIC? Well, [Calculator Clique] shows off BASIC running on a decidedly modern HP Prime calculator. The trick? It’s running under Python.⁉️

Why haven’t Quantum Computers Factored 21 yet?

If you are to believe the glossy marketing campaigns about ‘quantum computing’, then we are on the cusp of a computing revolution, yet back in the real world things look a lot less dire. At least if you’re worried about quantum computers [QCs] breaking every single conventional encryption algorithm in use today, because at this point they cannot even factor 21 yet without cheating.

🤖This Autonomous Aquatic Robot is smaller than a Grain of Salt.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan have succeeded in developing the smallest fully autonomous robot in history. It measures less than 1 millimeter and can swim underwater for months powered only by light.

⁉️Autonomous robots must sense their environment and make decisions about how to navigate it. All of this must be controlled by a chip measuring less than 1 mm. David Blau and his team at the University of Michigan took on this challenge.⁉️

:microsoft: Microsoft removes 119 Edge Extensions that hide Malware in Images and Fonts. Microsoft has shut down a long-running malicious extension operation on the Edge Add-ons store that hid its payloads inside ordinary image and font files, then woke up days after install to steal credentials and run ad fraud. https://microsoftedge.github.io/edgevr/assets/files/stego_ad/Microsoft_Edge_Security_StegoAd.pdf The company calls it StegoAd, a mash-up of steganography and adware, and ties 119 extensions to a single threat actor it says has been active since at least 2021. The extensions were the kind people install without a second thought: ad blockers, VPNs, translators, video downloaders. Each one did its job and earned reviews. The malicious code stayed dormant until the extension cleared a stack of evasion checks, which is how it sat in the store for years. https://microsoftedge.github.io/edgevr/posts/Inside-StegoAd-How-We-Disrupted-a-Massive-Malicious-Extension-Campaign/ ⁉️Combined, the 119 extensions had an install base of up to 2.6 million users. Microsoft is clear that this is a ceiling, not a victim count. A multi-day delay, server-side validation, and a 10% execution gate on some variants meant the payload never fired for many installs. How many people were actually compromised is not known.⁉️ #microsoft #edge #security #privacy #infosec #tech #media #news

Creating an Ultra-Stable Lunar Clock with a Cryogenic Silicon Cavity Laser.

Phase-coherent lasers are crucial for many precision tasks, including timekeeping. Here on Earth the most stable optical oscillators are used in e.g. atomic clocks and many ultra-precise scientific measurements, such as gravitational wave detection.

⁉️Since these optical oscillators use cryogenic silicon cavities, it’s completely logical to take this principle and build a cryogenic silicon cavity laser on the Moon.⁉️

:python: Hades PyPI Attack: 19 Packages poisoned to Auto-Run Bun Credential Stealer.

The Miasma supply chain campaign has sparked a fresh attack wave called Hades, this time involving 37 malicious wheel artifacts across 19 packages in the Python Package Index [PyPI] registry, as the Mini Shai-Hulud-style attacks continue to be refined and splintered to target specific ecosystems.

⁉️"The compromised releases shipped a *-setup.pth file that attempts to execute automatically during Python startup, download the Bun JavaScript runtime, and run an obfuscated JavaScript payload named _index.js," Socket said in a new analysis.⁉️

1Password teams with OpenAI to Stop AI Coding Agents from leaking Credentials.

The companies announced a new integration for OpenAI Codex that gives AI coding agents access to credentials during development workflows without exposing those secrets in prompts, source code, repositories, terminals or the model’s context window.

https://1password.com/blog/1password-trusted-access-layer-for-openai-codex

AI coding has become the de facto go-to tool for developing new apps. But there are two issues with this approach: the coding tool is agentic AI and inherits all the agentic security concerns; and app development requires widespread company access to credentials.

⁉️“Every action that AI coding agents take against a database, an API, or a deployment pipeline requires access to credentials,” explain Dennis Kromhout van der Meer and Robert Menke in an accompanying blog post. “Today, these credentials typically live in .env files, scripts, or hardcoded in repositories, where they can be easily exfiltrated and are difficult to govern and audit.”⁉️

:sgicube: Developer creates Real-Time 3D Shader Demo for the Game Boy Color — You can download the ROM or interact with the 3D Teapot online.

A canny developer has managed to coax a Game Boy Color [GBC] into running an interactive, user-controlled, real-time 3D shader demo. [Danny Spencer] shared a video, blog post, downloadable ROMs, source code, and even embedded the demo in an online GBC emulator, so anyone interested can give his Lambert-shaded 3D teapot a spin.

:terminal: The Sweetest Programming Language: MNM

Admit it. If you haven’t created your own little programming language, you’ve probably at least thought about it. [Muffed] decided to create a unique — and sweet — programming language that uses M&M [or, at least, M&M-like] candies as the building block of programs.

⁉️If this sounds strange, it is because, honestly, it is. It all started when a packet of GEMS [the Cadbury’s version of M&Ms] spilled and randomly fell in the shape of an arrow. There are only six symbols corresponding to the colors in a package. You create your program by arranging the candies and creating a digital image of the result. In practice, you’ll probably use ASCII text to represent your candy layout and let the compiler render the image for you.⁉️

🦛Hallo Brötchen! Berlin Zoo welcomes Baby Pygmy Hippo.

Meet Brötchen. The pygmy hippopotamus [Choeropsis liberiensis] was born on May 9th at Germany’s Zoo Berlin, weighing in at 13 pounds. “Brötchen” means “breadroll,” in German, and the zoo’s new member is rapidly becoming everyone’s favorite carb. The baby girl is making headlines and gracing the zoo’s Facebook cover photo. What’s more, its name was revealed in a social media post on June 10 that has now accumulated over 6,000 likes.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1DHZrTaCVs/

⁉️A number of Brötchen’s internet appearances involve water. In fact, “water plays an incredibly important role for pygmy hippos,” the zoo explains. “Bathing helps care for their sensitive skin while also allowing the little one to slowly and comfortably get used to the water.”⁉️

🌑China is Shooting for the Moon — Sooner Than You Think.

Humanity first reached the moon in 1969. We went back a few times, then lost interest within three short years, and we haven’t been back since. NASA has just flew a quartet of astronauts around the moon this year, and hopes to touch lunar soil by 2028. But the American space program is no longer the only game in town.

⁉️China has emerged as another major player in the second race for the Moon. Having mastered human spaceflight 23 years ago, the country’s space program has been moving from strength to strength. A moon landing is on the cards, with the country hoping to plant its boots, and presumably flag, in 2030.⁉️
