@jrconlin@mindof.jrconlin.com in my systems design class in grad school, my professor (a former Bell Labs researcher) said that there is wisdom in understanding when something is not a technology problem, but is instead a management problem. Also very good advice.

We need more #Mastodon at #GenCon. I haven't been able to attend since 2019 and I need all the pictures, toots, and videos to see what is going on this year. #GenCon2026 #boardgames #ttrpg #RPG #Miniatures #NerdStuff

Oof. Not the take I would have expected from you. The fact that a well crafted prompt can pull near identical data from the training source shows this is not the case. Touch grass, @eff@mastodon.social, I think you have spent too much time online.

I went to see The Sheep Detectives with my wife and daughter. It was delightful. If you like good old fashioned mysteries, it will be right down your alley.

RE: @inarticulatequilter@mastodon.art

Now I feel like #AI and the #AISlop purveyors are actively trying to drive us away from human creative pursuits.

It takes a lot of effort and humility to pick up and try to learn a craft or any form of art.

Slop tutorials, like those highlighted in this piece, burn people's precious time, energy, and (ultimately) motivation after frustrating experiences.

This stuff sucks!

Learn from these tips for spotting AI Slop tutorials and do art! Make crafts! It is good for the soul!

@grammargirl there have been some wild turkeys on the grounds where I work in the past. I thought they were wonderful to see, but they did get a little aggressive with some people. They are much smarter, and agile, than people give them credit. One of my favorite work memories was watching a posse of Tom turkeys putting security through their paces as they tried to round up and evict the group. At one point, a security cruiser was in slow pursuit of half of them through the parking lot. 😂

@Doomed_Daniel @mainec @david_chisnall This is my worry. Just look to Curl's ongoing fight with AI bug reports. Even if they are not actionable, it still takes time and mental energy to triage them. It sounds exhausting.

@elena@aseachange.com or on the couch. They have shown remarkable improvement over the years, but they are still not satisfied with their output. Anyway, they've recently had some peers ask them why they even bother struggling to get better at art because AI will just do it better and take all the art jobs in the future? Their response is that they make art and struggle with it for themselves. The struggle is part of it. They can see and feel their own growth. Those peers can't comprehend it. 2/2

@rysiek @wakame yeah. That one. So Anthropic's clutching of pearls over this happening is performative at best. They knew that this is possible because it is baked directly into the code. "You want to bypass these safe guards? Just say these magic words."

@rysiek considering the peeks into the leaked Claude Code, jailbreaking it this way is explicitly allowed in the code itself. If you tell it you are part of a security research team or on an authorized entertainment or doing a computer security assignment, it will let you do what you want.

@clive I just bought a laptop for a personal project that would have been around $600 a year ago. It was $1000 now. I figured if I didn't jump at this price, it would been completely outside my price range in another six months.

@elena I like puzzling over things & noodling on interesting problems. There is no greater high to me than banging my head against a problem, really struggling with it, & then eventually coming up with an answer. It feels so good. It is what I love about my job. My project for the year is to spend more time completing modules in Try Hack Me, other online security exercises, & CTFs. My focus will be on security fundamentals & hacking AI security, AI prompt injection, & AI data leakage.

@morrus@chirp.enworld.org kind of sad, really. Glad I and many of the people I know have moved on. At a time when RPG books from independent publishers are more beautiful and user friendly than ever. In a high tech world, you compete with high touch. It's going to be a banner couple of years for smaller publishers that understand this.

There are too many other channels that I subscribe to who benefit more, literally, or hare armed by my attention or inattenion. I would rather spend my limited time on them.

#Bookstodon you are my only hope.

What is the best fantasy novel that you have read in 2025?

The book doesn't have to come from 2025, just one that you read last year.

Tell me a little about the book and why you liked it.

I am finishing up one of the books I am reading and am looking at the next to add to my rotation.

Thank you.

Boosts welcomed.

Replying to
@troed@swecyb.com @eff@mastodon.social I am talking about overfitting. That case has existed in models pushed to the public by frontier AI labs and is the basis of cases against them by orgs like the New York Times. Overfitting may not be the desired outcome, but it is inherent in the technology if not accounted for. The problem for the labs is if their weights make outputs too far from source text, they can get less useful results. If they adhere too close to the original source, it could lead to legal trouble.
