Tasmanian...wow, nearly 4 years here. I'll be a local if I stay another 20 years 😄.

The chess Olympiad sees the host team Uzbekistan in dominant form, winning all their matches so far. With four rounds to go, they seem unstoppable. There is a women's only event where Australia was paired against Israel. Current Australian Women's Champion Heather Richards refused to play. This is what she said. "Today, for round 7 of the 46th Chess Olympiad, the Australian Women’s Team has been paired against Israel. I was due to play this round, having rested the previous round. I am not playing. I am participating in the sporting boycott of Israel. Russia is currently banned from competing in the Chess Olympiad due to the invasion of Ukraine. Israel should be banned from the Chess Olympiad. I am doing this because Israel is committing a genocide. The Chess Olympiad is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, with over 200 countries competing this year. Letting Israel participate in major sports events allows them to engage in sportswashing of their reputation and to project an image of normality to the world while they commit genocide and apartheid. Over 70,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7 2023, over 21,500 of which are children. There have been almost 1,400 fatalities since the “ceasefire”. At least 21,000 children have been disabled. Israel’s own internal documents state that the civilian deaths are about 83% of all deaths. In 2025, the United Nations Independent Commission of Inquiry on Occupied Palestinian Territory found that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. In 2026, they also found that Israeli authorities and security forces have deliberately targeted Palestinian children as part of their genocidal and atrocity crimes in both Gaza and the West Bank. The International Court of Justice has issued arrest warrants for war crimes and crimes against humanity for Netanyahu and other Israeli ministers. Israel should be banned from all sporting events just like apartheid South Africa was. I oppose genocide. I oppose the Israeli apartheid which denies Palestinians basic rights and dignity. I oppose the illegal occupations of the Palestinian territories as per the ruling of the International Court of Justice. I stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people." #BanIsrael #FIDE #ChessOlympiad #BDS #FreePalestine #Chess

Last weekend I went to Liffey Falls with my wife. It's a 45 minute return walk, apparently. We were overtaken by quite a few walkers who passed us again on their way back. It took us nearly 3 hours, but we touched, smelled, listened, and saw a lot of flora. It wasn't really the season for tasting. I'd never seen Candlesnuff Fungus before, so was almost as excited as at the waterfall. #Tasmania #lutruwita #Fungi #Mushtodon #Mushrooms

I kept going through the third and fourth volumes as storylines seem to drag or contrive. And I'm still waiting for the mythical sixth volume, like everyone else, though I don't know if I'll bother to read it if he ever writes it

In Campbell Town, central Tasmania, they have a statue of Elizabeth Furlong. She was part of a farming dynasty that helped introduce Merino sheep to Australia. I like the way the town commemorate socio economic achievement rather than politico military like so many do. And it's good that the woman of the family gets recognition rather than being erased and eclipsed by her male relatives. #Tasmania #lutruwita #Australia #Statue #Equality #Womensrights

@sisterratched@social.vivaldi.net It's just astronomical vs meteorological. I would imagine people all over the world look at it differently. Australia may traditionally use a meteorological definition, but pagans will always use an astronomical definition, including Australian pagans.

The latest Russian attacks on Ukrainian city of Kherson have destroyed the Kherson Chess Club. The only FIDE Presidential candidate to issue a statement so far is German, Jan Heinrich Buettner (the others are Russian toadys). "Chess teaches us that even the fiercest of contests are governed by rules and respect. War reminds us of the terrible consequences when those principles are abandoned." #Chess #War #Russia #Ukraine

Today is International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases such as ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia.

Whether you are affected by one of these diseases, or know someone who is (Alzheimer's, Autism and Epilepsy also belong in this category, as well as many others), hopefully these conditions will be given more research and funding in the future.

It is held on Florence Nightingale's birthday as it is believed she had MECFS.

I bought the book "King, Queen and Knight" from a second hand bookshop today. It is a chess anthology of prose and verse. In the Forward, by C.H.O.D Alexander (chess master and famous cryptanalyst who worked with Turing et al on Enigma), he expresses beautifully an issue for strong chess players, though it could be applied to almost any field. "When we are soaked in chess, completely involved in its technicalities, we lose something; we forget what it was it was like when we first learnt this mysterious, inexhaustible, implacable art/game/science. Seeing chess - both in itself and in its numerous usages as an analogue of larger things - through the eyes of those who may be inexpert players but are highly articulate and intelligent men and women, we can perhaps regain some of the freshness of feeling that we once had." #Chess #Books #Quotes
