Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I worked on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that kept rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order). Not quite sure what to do with myself now.

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org St. Clair County adopted a novel public health regulation last year that set limits on solar development and battery storage. The move was encouraged by the county’s medical director who, in a memo, warned of the threat of noise, visual pollution and potential sources of contamination. Ah yes. The deafening roar. Of solar panels.

Bad alcohol
@darkuncle@infosec.exchange @tess@mastodon.social @Alice@beige.party Oh, definitely! A lot of tequila is sold basically to be mixed into margarita mixes so they can be a bit iffy when tried alone. I'm not an expert by any means, but this is what I found out while trying to work things out. (Tequila and Mezcal are the same thing. You just get to call yourself "tequila" if it's made in a specific area.) Stick with Silver. There are good aged tequila, but a lot of them taste like a wood shop to me, so I skip them. From what I understand, if you don't roast the agave right, you either get the "medicinal" taste that Alice noted, or you get something more acrid. The acrid stuff does better in wood, so some distilleries put that in their Silver as well. (That's why you see a lot of tequila served with lime.)A "good" tequila has subtle sweet floral tones followed by a peppery bite. The pepper is somewhere between jalapeno and black pepper. Not aggressive, but definitely noticeable. This is why it pairs well with citrus like Lemonade or ideally, fresh orange juice. The brands that I like (in no certain order) are: Codigo (they offer a sampler pack, if you just want to try it out.) The silver is best, but the Rosa isn't bad, and the Anejo is tolerable. I'd probably still mix it, but YMMV.Luna de Jalisco This one is fairly mellow, but definitely has the floral tones. It's very nice as a sipping tequila and goes well with things like chicken and cheese.Casamigos Yes, this is one of those Celebrity Boozes, but it's honestly pretty good. It's light and goes well with things like seafood. Also mixes really well with fresh squeezed orange juice.Gran Centenario This one can be a bit hit-or-miss with some folk? It's say the others are better, but this one is still very smooth and balanced. Unlike the others, this seems to have good years and not so great years, so it's less of a mix. You can try the smaller bottle version if they have it and see. One thing that also really helped us was that we went to a tequila bar and talked with the barkeep. She was amazing and really knew her stuff. She's the one that taught me what to look for. She served more "tasters" which was way less than a full shot so we didn't feel like we were wasting anything. You may want to see if there's a good one year y'all and see if that might help.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run I am convinced that the people making hiring decisions do not understand (nor do they want to understand) that people have skills. They want to view hires as fungible resources that roughly fit slots, so you get "Software Person" who is somehow good with systems configuration, operational security, multi-language coding, quality assurance, performance testing, and I dunno, office supplies. And yet, I never read about how these CEOs are filling in for their own legal team, HR, project planning, reception and janitorial staff. Seems like there's a lot of redundancy there. Surely these high pay individuals have the skills to do those other roles properly and without complaint.

God, how I feel this too.

I kind of want to start up a weird collective of folk who just want to create, teach, and just kinda screw around with tech without the extra bullshit.

Kind of like that commune at the end of Fahrenheit 451 of people who would recite books to each other or anyone who would listen.

@alice@lgbtqia.space Heh, there are folk that want to be considered celebrities, and glory in whatever fame they can get. There are folk that are celebrities, and are ashamed of the glory they receive. There are folk that are celebrities and just want to talk about locks, trains, and cats. And there are folk who are intimidated by others for all sorts of reasons, but partly from the scars of dealing with the first two groups. Thank you for being someone smart enough to let that last group know who you are. ( I can hear you thinking "Wait? I am a celebrity? I never even got a call to be on the easy Jeopardy rounds." I'm sure you're on the list, they just haven't gotten around to calling you yet.)

@chbug@defcon.social If an author actually crafted the code, corner cases, and maintained it, then I'd say that work is probably less AI generated than someone quickly vibe-coding some package. Codeberg isn't saying "No AI at all", they're just saying that you can't have the package majority be AI generated. (In your example, if the AI crafted most of the code and tests, then I would imagine it should not be included.) Why? Because some other AI would do a better job at a later date. Remember randomness is part of any LLM so each iteration generated will be different. The code in this case is eminently disposable, by design. One could argue that the detailed prompt used to generate the code might be of higher value in that case because it defines all the requirements of the code to be generated, but I absolutely think it's Codeberg's call to decide if they're willing to host that.

So, yeah, here are some super Fun Facts for folk to consider: The first order of business for any new regime is to oust the prior one.The average tenure for many folk in tech is four years (Some departments, like marketing and executive roles have far shorter tenure.)People hate history because they are smarter and know better, and any historical proof otherwise should be ignored since it’s wrong. The more churn, the less a company stays consistent with any particular guideline or principle (unless the founder is the CEO or something, but that is incredibly rare).Your worth as a customer is often measured by how much the next gig pays. This is also true for any new feature added. Yay!

@manchuck@phpc.social @afilina@phpc.social Absolutely. The problem (and to be clear, a LOT of engineers don't help things) is that management sees engineers as "fungible". It's just tech. Do the tech to make the thing. The problem is that it's like saying doctors are fungible and that the only reason your dentist doesn't do heart surgery is because they don't have access to the right tools. ( Dave is a 10x dentist and does organ transplants, so you really need to step up your game ) Engineers also need to think in terms of a network of support as well as demanding that the company bring in new talent that they can start training. The problem is that engineering culture has always been "Sink or Swim" and "Be the single stand out" rather than part of a larger team. Not always true, but the number is depressingly high.

So, thinking about the Codeberg "No All AI" code thing... Why would anyone reuse a library or function generated by AI? It's fungible, and can (and probably should) be regenerated. There's no expertise or skill that went into generating that code. There's no tangible benefit other than maybe reducing your token spend. It is, by definition, eminently replaceable. So why should a site like Codeberg provide expensive hosting space for what is, in any practical sense, disposable code? It's like demanding that dishwashers accept paper plates.

@blogdiva@mastodon.social @gabrielesvelto@mas.to Huh, interesting question. First thought was the East India Company, but that one was highly extractive, but still tended to follow "normal" commerce (they paid on contracts for things like ships and some goods without needing those companies to buy from them). In some respects, NVidia is also acting like a monopsony, since it's pretty much the sole provider of the GPUs being used by AI centers, with the rest of the high purchases (memory, disk, etc) being tack-on to that. The thing that is really weird is that NVidia is essentially funding their customers to establish it's own market, and I'm hard pressed to come up with an example of any other market doing that. Even some of the most egregious self constructed monopsony markets (Standard oil) actually produced something of value outside of it's own market, which lead to it self-maintaining. ( granted, I'm an amateur history buff, so I expect someone actually versed in this to have a better answer )

Nothing on WatchDuty, traffic is a mess, so no clear trouble spot, both FlightRadar and airplanes.live aren't showing any air traffic. Wound up pulling AlertCalifornia to see if I can spot any structure fires, but no, it's the whole Santa Clara valley that's socked in. I'm guessing this was probably smoke from the Angel Island burn, but wow, it's thick. (Also, LORA was pretty quiet, so guessing no HAM op was on fire.)

Again, want me to get onboard with your whole "Orbital Data Centers are Good, Actually" thing? Build a bunch on the ground. They only use solar power, use radiative cooling, and communicate using whatever radio you're planning on using. Hell, the cooling and comms should be worlds easier to do. Replace a bunch of your existing data centers with them and have them run for five years without any maintenance or service, only to switch off and degrade into harmless components that are absorbed back into the carbon cycle. Then I will be your biggest goddam cheerleader, but until then, you're wasting money and resources and you're colossal idiots for even trying this.

@cwebber The thing I laugh about in all of this, the thing that is absolutely the funniest, is that while these AI generated or "rewritten" projects may be Open Source, it will never be free. It was created using a sizable investment. It can only be maintained by additional investment. No one, external, will want or be able to contribute, meaning no prospect of continuance. There will absolutely be licensing fees, because money has to come from somewhere, which absolutely undercuts whatever value they might think they're offering. That kind of renders these projects as instant abandon-ware, and any systems architect worth their salt is absolutely going to spot that red flag. Truly, the learning opportunities are endless.

Essentially, you could create an ssh tunnel to the remote site (using something like ssh -D 8080 user@host, then use something like a SOCKS proxy on your local browser. (set to hit localhost:8080) I've done that plenty of times in the past with my box at home. That said, you're trading HTTP pokes for SSH ones. You can solve for both using things like fail2ban. That seriously helps manage traffic since the clowns get banned pretty fast.

They don't care about craft, understanding, or design because that's not their motivation. To them, it's just a job to pay for what they want to do, but their parents disapprove of. Give them a magic box that thinks for them while they still get to collect the paycheck? Yes, please, may I get more? The folk that actually give a damn about what they're doing, how their code is being used, and who gets impacted by it is probably far smaller than we'd feel comfortable acknowledging.

Back in college, I had a Systems Architecture and Design professor. The very first day of his class he stood up in front of us and said: "One day, you're going to be brought in to help optimize a company. You'll see that they're doing things by using index cards in shoeboxes. Then, after you understand their processes, points of interaction, and audits, you'll find out that the most optimal way for them to work is by using index cards in shoe boxes. Walk away." That was one of the best bits of advice I ever got in my career. Why? Because it reinforced that in order to solve a problem, you have to understand the problem. You have to understand how the problem fits into it's larger ecosystem. You have to understand what the solution breaks and what problems it will cause. Nothing lives in isolation. Everything is interconnected. The last thing you do as a systems architect is write code. I wish like hell more folk understood that, particularly the vibe-coding, rapid iteration, "throw code at it" types.
