@evacide@hachyderm.io Flock really posted a “wElL aCkShUlLy” response to the EFF claims and spent the entire article explaining how they use loopholes and the letter of the law to bypass civil liberties and the spirit of the law. We need to keep pushing legislation to ban their surveillance model and rallying our local governments to terminate contracts. Edit: This is a fantastic step towards curtailing their overreach. I’m excited for more victories ahead.

Harm against others
@stux@mstdn.social Is self defense not a right in that country? Not to hop on my slippery slope, but if somebody is being raped, are they expected to let it happen then call the police? If somebody breaks into the judge’s house and beats their wife, are they supposed to stand there on the phone with the police and watch it happen? America gets a large percentage of things wrong, but a right to self defense is not one of them. If somebody breaks into my house, they’re going to be met with violence until they are gone or no longer a threat.

@marielgm@mastodon.mit.edu @evacide@hachyderm.io I think it would be nifty if we could geotag our Fediverse posts and thus be able to find recent posts near me (chronological posts within a fixed distance). Would bring back that concept, albeit not as widespread as Twitter was.

@spacelizard@aus.social @smsm1@mastodon.green @sundogplanets@mastodon.social The semi has nothing to do with the truck. It refers to the semi-trailer, which lacks the front axel of a full trailer. Those semi-trailers are then pulled by tractor trucks, which are trucks designed to haul trailered loads. Connect a tractor truck to a semi-trailer, and you’ve got a tractor trailer. It allows you to cleanly describe either component separately or both together.

@FreakyFwoof@universeodon.com @TechTangents@dialup.space AI is also useful for IT. By using it to watch for patterns that can allow you to mitigate issues before they cascade. I had an issue with storage latency causing what appeared as a memory leak on my SMB container, and I was struggling to solve it until I fed the logs live to a locally run AI. Once the next crash happened, I had a timeline of relevant needles plucked from the haystack. That said, I’m still predominantly opposed to generative AI. Most uses for it just result in noise that spams our senses. Plus they’ve been trained on uncompensated human labor, and are being used to degrade the living conditions of real humans. I’m not opposed to using technology to replace human labor, when done in a society that provides for those humans. Capitalism is not the society that provides for those displaced humans, nor is art a labor to be automated.

The goal is the destruction of science that can prove fossil fuels are doing long-term damage to the environment. Right now, the Republican administration would pay good money to destroy other countries’ climate science programs if they could.

@Mae@is.badat.dev @colinpurrington@flipping.rocks Mosquitoes, and the plethora of ailments they can transmit, are capable of causing even more deaths than we can do to ourselves on an average year. Malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, human botflies that burrow into your skin to breed, worms that cause disfigurement, and more. Many of them are rarely acquired, treatable, and/or regional, but mosquitoes have a knack for spreading disease.

Once they get going, you can see the field is quite empty except for competitors. It’s still quiet enough that you can hear birds chirping. By the time they get to the first corner, the crowd begins cheering; it’s light enough to pick out individual cheers and claps. By the time the woman walks across the view in the middle of the race, you’re already convinced it’s a calm day.

@aburka@hachyderm.io @Daojoan@mastodon.social Also you’ve lived the product so deeply during development that you can never view it the same way as someone else who sees it for the first time. There’s a reason some actors never watch their own films. Being a video editor is psychological torture depending on your relationship to the media. All of the magic is ruined when you watched every scene a hundred times. Bonus: You thought you liked that song? Now you’ve heard it a hundred times in this one scene and it is permanently linked to that moment. The song could come on the radio for the first time in fifteen years and it will trigger that one scene in your brain. You can’t forget it.
