@tinker@infosec.exchange "paying a fine is often cheaper than paying a fee, especially in aggregate" I read this earlier and it made so much sense. As I kept scrolling, I find a ProPublica story about Purdue avoiding paying a settlement to half of the opioid victims.

@infobeautiful I vaguely recall knowing both the French way and the decimal way during Welsh lessons at school, so the 90+2 for the UK hides a bit of nuance. edit - although clicking through the link, I guess it's only considering English for the UK.

@alice@lgbtqia.space The map on this site is excellent! Our city got rid of them (well, supposedly cancelled the contract - who knows if we actually got rid of the hardware), but I see the local mall and hardware retail store has them setup at all entrances and exits. I thought I had seem some there, but didn't know there were so many. It should be legal to blast IR or do something that doesn't visually affect the plate but obstructs these damn cameras.

@stefan I had about 20 minutes in between ferrying kiddos around yesterday, so I popped in to my library for the first time in years. I somehow got to this age without having been in a library on my own before, nor without any real purpose, so felt a bit self-conscious. Anyway, I decided to have a good browse of the audio books (CDs) and films (DVDs). Absolutely bonkers how many they have. I know it's terribly convenient to just pull something up on Libby, but I know that probably costs the library licensing or something, so am going to make an effort to fetch CDs instead. Added advantage of CDs just playing in my car, whereas Android Auto is prone to crashing. Weirdly, it was pretty overwhelming and I didn't get anything this time. I think I need to browse their online catalogue online first, scope out a few authors I know I want to listen to. edit - forgot to say, there were some older folk there enjoying a coffee/tea or something and lazily catching up on some newspaper. What a peaceful way to spend a Saturday morning.

My fellow members of #Hachyderm *, we need a few more folks playing @Fedle@fedle.fedilab.app to allow the instance to show on the score board!

It's fun. And tricky. English and French versions available!

@bruces I haven't read Windows Central for a long time (years, at this point) as I was struggling a bit with the unabashed enthusiasm for the company. That the article lays into Xbox, Windows, and Github, and the whole direction of the company, was quite interesting.

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net Easy for me to say in retrospect, but I had a weird vibe from MeshCore (not AI related, the older vibe). It was enough for me to lose interest and stop following the tag. This feels like a positive change though, and a sensible position for the team to adopt. Now I'm looking forward to getting back into this - there's a big gap on the map where I'm located.

@nixCraft This briefly stressed me out, and I considered who I'd talk to internally about sensitive requirements in these products. But you know what? Some bean counter decided we needed data in the cloud and I'm just sick of worrying about other people's decisions. Some deal with all the company info we're probably thoughtlessly putting into AI each day. So, come what may. Sod it.

@mattblaze@federate.social Huh, so long wave stations must have had pretty sizeable antennas? I'm quite fond of AM still, growing up I had a radio cassette thing in my bedroom which had all the AM bands split out separately. Evidently, radio stations of the era (mid 80s) didn't change often, as many stations were actually printed on the dial for convenience. One that always used to blow my mind is Radio Luxembourg, and how far away we were receiving it (in the UK). What I didn't know, having only just read the wiki entry decades later, is that it was almost a pirate radio of sorts, because it could reach the UK when the entire domestic spectrum was apparently locked down for use only by the BBC. TIL!

@inthehands I thought this to myself last night, while catching up on For All Mankind on Apple TV. I get that this is alternate history and happens in the past still, but a news segment mentioned Kiev and I thought that the subtitles/captions really ought to have written it as Kyiv (the text wasn't present on the screen outside of the captions).

Iowa appears to be the main character of the weather today. Reed Timmer and storm chasing crew are up in Dubuque in their armored truck.

First time I've watched this, it's all very Twisters (which I did not enjoy as much as the original).

Folks are a bit spooked about this squall line apparently due later this evening. The derecho of 2020 will be fresh in everyone's mind for years to come.

One of the things I enjoy about Windows 11, now that we interact with so many web and electron apps, is how often the mouse cursor will simply disappear. Something to do with the compositor, as I understand it.

I mean, who doesn't enjoy trying to guess what they're clicking on, or where text will appear when they start typing.

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange The costs *have* to recoup this absurd (and, presumably, ongoing for new models) training and hardware cost. Surely? Disney+ has nearly tripled in price since launch not that long ago, or merely doubled if you tolerate ads. How many times will a new thing loss-lead before people understand the process?
