Still remain undetermined about the #fpga to path to follow. While I will most certainly get the NANDLAND go as a starter, I am totally undecided about the next one: Altera, Xilinx and Lattice all seem equally viable 😭😭😭

Almost 30 years from the most amazing experience as a medical student: observing the transformation of HIV from a lethal disease to manageable condition over the late spring - summer of 1996. I guess the med students in 2026 will get to experience the antivax era

Ensitrelvir was just approved in Japan for prophylaxis against SARSCOV2 #COVID19
Among 2,041 people living with COVID-19 patients, 30 of 1,030 who received it developed the disease within 10 days compared with 91 of 1,011 (9.0%) in the placebo group for relative risk ⬇️67%.

This is a very good book: brief, information rich and you can use the code for production if you must.

Lots of speculation on X about B3.2 #covid19 variant selectively infecting kids & potential molecular mechanisms. However, one cannot say anything meaningful about which variant infects which subgroup without metadata to account for the selection of samples in sequencing runs.

You will be unsurprized by how many successfully (standardized) tested graduates do not grasp the material, and in fact cannot explain the material they were successfully tested on. Essay testing should come back and a major barrier to do so was eliminated by LLM+SSM hybrids.

I was expecting more from Bloomberg. First of all, if the pandemic is over why do the sequeala cost money? So by definition the pandemic is not over, in which case we should ask the real questions : who made the decision to spend these 135B per year by not ending the pandemic and what the counterfactual , alternative futures are and how much would they cost?

The combined GDP of the OECD countries is around 65T , so 135B is 0.2% of the sector's GDP

"pperl is a next-generation #Perl 5 platform written in #Rust, targeting Perl 5.42+ compatibility."

Parts of it appear to have been generated by code assist (and it is not clear what will happen to the XS modules) but 💪 work!

The trial in the Lancet that supposedly showed that ⬆️ fluid intake does not prevent recurrent kidney stones is misleading. First they only tested a behavioral intervention to promote fluid intake. Secondly the achieved fluid intake was inadequate

As people are becoming token poor, I hope they discover that the chatbots are reasonably good at writing #Perl and that one can fit lots of tasks on a limited token budget using the expressiveness of the language.

If you want to have fun try to get one of the slopbots to argue about out-of-core numerical linear algebra solvers and their suitability for CPU vs GPU deployments. They quickly end up contradicting themselves because the lit is nuanced. But yeah, AGI and end of scientists.

The hardcore homelab crowd have rack servers at home as well and may even be able to host SXM baseboards (could be wrong though). The Blackwells are going to be bricks unfortunately

Having a reasonably cheap automation to do so is a very valuable service indeed , but there is no need to hype things up and inflate the bubble further. My 2c as a researcher who uses a lot of software for data analyses and is forced to consider security because of the increasing complexity of regulations about biomedical and human electronic health record data.

There are tons of examples like this, and recognition that this historical bias exists immediately decreases support of the idea that AI finds things that humans missed. What is happening is that an extensive review process finds things using an updated knowledge base. This extensive review could/should be done by human security experts, but the resources to do so are simply not there for most software artefacts.

However If the security pattern was not known at the time the initial security review was done (think SQL ingestion pre 1988 which iirc was the year it was discovered) the code would have been considered secure. Very few code bases are continuously reviewed for security after the initial one. Another good example is the DOS using non randomized hash keys in scripting languages. This one does not even need ingestion of the code...

Installing the RTX 5090 in a FIPS Ubuntu system (before you get blocked , we only have approvals for 22.04 and Redhat here and I value my sanity) was a major pain in the butt since nvidia-smi would not find the card going through the repo drivers. But manual install worked

it simply needs to provide certain data to the hashes/dictionaries used by system languages eg Perl or Python. It was recognized more that 15 years ago and many software still does not randomize the keys for the hashes (design decision for performance, or just ignorance of the pattern). However if you run the AI it will likely pick this vulnerability and flag it.

@drinfosec.bsky.social This is the result of misdiagnosed problem (FIPS kernel not playing nice with an instrument that plugs in USB C) leading to the uninstall of the apt repo kernel, followed by installation of thr nvidia kernel from their website, followed by a botched attempt to uninstall their kernel which was mistakenly thought to cause the problem. Setting the server follows a 40 page SOP so yeah if I cannot get it up and running we will be reinstalling everything again
