@SecondUniverse @Tattie I remember being a kid and looking at the pop psychology versions of both of those and deciding that neither fit. I didn't have any desire to cross dress so I wasn't a TV, and I didn't know I was the opposite gender, so I wasn't a TS. Total nonbinary erasure. Imagine my surprise when I looked up the actual Benjamin Scale and realized that other than the dressing part I fit the description of a Type IV TS pretty well.

@faithisleaping@anarres.family You unlocked a memory of me trying to talk my Scout leadership into letting us do a skit where we were girls (costumed appropriately of course) and getting Very Not Approved (apologetically but apparently it was against our particular unit's rules.) I can't even remember if it was supposed to be a funny skit or not.

@faithisleaping@anarres.family @Willow@chaosfem.tw Good point. I wouldn't wish trauma on anyone. It's funny, though. I've thought a lot about what it would have been like if nonbinary was something people knew about when I was a kid and I socially transitioned as soon as I could. I think I probably would have had more trauma instead of less, and I can't say for sure I would have survived that. It's kind of a sobering thought.

I think we can influence who we're attracted to a little bit around the edges by thinking things like "That outfit is hot!", but for the most part we very much cannot control who we are or aren't attracted to. The catch is that we're attracted to so many people we can select potential mates based on stronger criteria than just if we're attracted to them or not.

@rooster I always assumed I'd be in the "why didn't they do something" category but one of the ones actually doing something. I was completely unprepared to be in the "why didn't they run away" category.

@faithisleaping @JoscelynTransient Then in high school I learned about homophobia and transphobia, and even though I didn't think I was gay or trans I knew that people with feelings about gender like me sometimes got killed for that and it spooked me into being quiet.

@faithisleaping @JoscelynTransient Then a few years later I realized that my estimation of the danger was highly overblown and I didn't want to live in fear. On the other hand no one has noticed and asked me about gender since then, so the difference is kind of academic.

@faithisleaping@anarres.family It wasn't an excuse though because I decided before then that it would be ok for me to wear girls' clothes and seriously considered asking my mom to go shopping with me for them but decided that sounded dreadfully dull.

@jima@mspsocial.net @oldladyplays@wargamers.social @mayintoronto@beige.party One of my children announced to me one day that she didn't think she was any of (lesbian, bisexual, trans, nonbinary, intersex, aromantic, asexual). So it does happen. On the other hand when she said that my immediate thought was "oh, I guess I didn't explain being aro well enough because she's almost certainly aro if not aroace." I don't doubt that she's cis and perisex but who knows on the others. She's still a kid though so has time to figure that out.

@faithisleaping Being nonbinary complicates these decisions a lot. You can't be recognized as nonbinary and stealth at the same time.

I imagined myself at 4 going around telling everyone that I wasn't a boy or a girl and to call me by some freshly self-invented pronouns. It was pretty emotional.

@Tattie I don't know. It sure felt to me like I chose to be nonbinary when I was a little kid. I remember it well. But I really don't know if the burst of emotion that powered it was from my sense of justice or some primeval sense of gender. I've started to wonder if that was connected to what I've felt ever since puberty started or if it was just coincidence that it more or less matched up. All I know is that it's not a choice now. The dysphoria is certainly not a choice.

@Tattie @Azuaron I had a hard time empathizing with trans people when I thought I was cis because imagining things like that didn't do anything for me. Then I realized that it would have if I was cis but things made a whole lot more sense if I assumed I wasn't cis.

@faithisleaping@anarres.family I agree that there are no feminine or masculine activities, but I don't think the fact that I wasn't bothered by taking up hobbies that are traditionally not done by my assigned gender is unrelated to the fact that I'm nonbinary.
