Six years ago today, at the end of eleven days of panicked questioning, I realized I was trans. I can't believe it was that recent. Just, absolutely blows my mind. The 35 years of my life before feels as substantial as smoke in the wind.

So here's the thing that really flabbergasts me: That 2.34%? That's the absolute floor of where the trans population could possibly be. That's our population with, guaranteed, a shitload of trans people lying their asses off to the government. Meaning the actual population numbers are much higher. I'm not going to take a guess at what the actual headcount of the trans population is, but with data like this, 5% is starting to seem conservative to me. I wouldn't be surprised to see 10%, absent bigotry and with robust education. Wouldn't even dismiss estimates in the teens, which I would've before today. Jesus Christ on a cracker. 2.34%, off of census data, in this day and age. I'm just speechless. Wow. Anyway, trans rights, and this is why they can't possibly win against us. There's just too many of us.

The immediate part that's stunning here is that the HRC's numbers, at 2.34%, are almost a FIFTY PERCENT increase on Pew's, with only a couple of extra years having passed, and that's after the Pew study approximately tripled the population of the best study before it, from 2017. But. But here's the thing: the source data for the HRC is *census* data. That's the part that absolutely blows my head off. Why? Because minoritized people lie about being minoriities when the government asks. Governments use the data do genocides. To be clear, this is not a new thing. It's one of the largest ongoing difficulties in census research not only in the US, but in basically every nation around the world; demographers are CONSTANTLY noting in their census analyses that they're virtually guaranteed to have undercounted minorities. In particular, the HRC's datapool comes from 2021-2024, meaning that 3/4 of the years it covers are AFTER the present trans panic really exploded, in the 2022 election cycle. Stop and read that again. THIS IS GOVERNMENT DATA DURING A GENOCIDE. And the numbers are still that high.

I was told to be, essentially, a non-person sapient thing with a designated purpose. It was supposed to be an exploration of consent and agency, because AI players were not *allowed* to say no to humans. Basically, I wasn't treated as a person, but was understood to be sapient. I was used. That shouldn't be an easy and comfortable thing. It should be gross. But, the thing is, that's just... Kinda normal. I'm a teacher, an activist, a public science educator. I get used by people all the time, and folks do all these elaborate silly social dances to obfuscate that fact. It was nice. I'm altersex, trans, autistic--I am REALLY alienated from the world that's been built around me. People made a universe to suppress and exploit people like me, to hold the power of life or death over me, to completely ignore my consent, and expect me to act like that's a reasonable thing. This was honest, and let me feel like, at least, we were acknowledging the elephant on the room. They had to Say The Fucking Thing. And for once, I got to be seen as me in a way I never get to be seen. It feels insane to say, but I really wish there were more opportunities to be treated like that. From an exercise meant to alienate, challenge, and disturb me, I instead felt deeply comforted and recharged. And that's a thing to sit with for a while, I think.

My dad died in 2018, and up until that point I tried to obliterate myself by making myself into a carbon copy of him. It was how I kept a lid on the dysphoria. I loved him more than I'll ever be able to say. He was also the prison I built for myself, to contain myself. His greatest regret was always the incurable sadness of that dysphoria, that shone through the cracks of my facade. He wanted me to be happy. I couldn't be, not then. So, for Father's Day this year, I'm going to Pride with my tits out and I'm gonna be as happy as I fucking can be.
