A friend just took the immensely brave step of telling her GP she thinks she is trans and wants to go on hormones, and he (a cis, gay man) tried to "supportively" convince her that she wasn't really trans, because he "has trans friends" and knows that if she was really a woman "she would know". I identify as a #plural system— to oversimplify, I feel that there is not so much a single cohesive "me" as a, well, plurality of them. With careful introspection I can notice myself switching between which version of me is "fronting", or observe myself to be operating in a more "blended" mode. 1/

I regard with growing alarm the idea of "trauma dumping" as a supposed negative— that talking frankly about your troubles is variously unusual, rude, harmful, or even something to be punished. It seems to be verging even on an idea that trauma is somehow something which is infectious, spread by talking about. 1/

I remember arguing with other atheists that "yeah, but, plenty of horrible things have been done by secular governments too, even ones that are anti-religious", and the sheer mental gymnastics that prompted in response. Everything could be traced back to religion, I was told, and if we got rid of that, all injustice would somehow evaporate. That's an unfounded belief that struck me as ironically cultlike.

@faithisleaping@anarres.family came here to say, well, basically exactly what you did. I feel I had some privileges that the cis women around me didn't, in certain situations. They also had privileges that I, a closeted trans woman, didn't. Similarly, since coming out and transitioning I've noticed a complex shift of privileges. On the whole tho I feel that the primary privilege I gained— of living as my authentic self— is more fundamental and valuable to me than all the ones I've lost by moving thru life as a woman. @revoluciana@chaosfem.tw

I know my beliefs in this regard are unfounded, a matter of faith. Almost the point of it all is to sit with uncertainty, to be comfortable with not knowing. Peace necessitates being able to be in relation to others who might have wildly different philosophies, and to do that I think it's necessarily to have at least an inking of the contingent nature of our own belief system.

Typically the ex-Christian atheist would say "there's no such thing as a 'Christian' or 'Jewish' atheist, as atheism precludes religion", but that understanding is based specifically in Christian doctrine.

For this reason "Christian atheist" is indeed very much a contradiction in terms under most understandings*, whereas "Jewish atheist" definitely isn't.

@Oggie yep. I went thru an obnoxious phase, but what I realise now is that I was grieving. I'd lost a personally meaningful relationship with a father figure (in God), and I was angry that I had been given that only for it to be taken away. And yeah, this was around about 20 years old. I was young, I'd been thrown out into the world to try to figure out where I fit, I was closeted to myself and the world, and I was struggling. I have compassion for the self I was back then. And then as I found happiness and security in life, I grew out of this phase. I learnt to find confidence in not knowing everything, to sit with the fundamental uncertainty of being. @inthehands
