My friends, I have heard it is #Owltober. Which means y'all are due for a #BakedBeansOwl update!
Here he is out on a walk. Still looks a bit scruffy from molting but it's starting to come back in.

You ever had a bad hair day?
How about a bad hair month?
That's right, Beans is molting (but just his head) so he looks really funny right now.

BIRTHDAY TIME!
Everyone please wish #BakedBeansOwl a happy first birthday!!!
The keepers have made this lovely hat for bird birthdays. Beans didn't seem to mind the hat, but he was was a bit grumpy about having to go out in public and meet people.
If anyone would like send a birthday present his way, the best thing you can do is support your local zoo, animal hospital, or conservation group. If you'd like to donate to Beans's zoo, here's a link below

What if, we put tiny bird in bird bath?
In reality, Baked Beans had just refused a mist shower (something birds often like) and instead decided to jump into the water bowl after the keepers left.

For reference, here's a picture of Tony the Tawny Frogmouth getting a mist bath.
He is not, in fact an owl. He is from Australia and is a type of nightjar, a family shared by whippoorwills.
I adore tawny frogmouths. They look like Muppets. When they're not doing anything and want you to mind your own business, that act like a vertical log. And are very good at it.

Just me looking into a UofA masters degree in optics.
While I'm working full time.
Because I get jittery when I've been out of classes for more than 3 years.
I mean, it would only be 7 years of taking classes after work, and work would pay for it all. No biggie.
Guys, I might have a problem.

Okay come on. Stop being a dick.
Communication (including jokes) is a 2-way street and is only effective if the message is received as intended. Otherwise it's bad communication. Saying that someone who was the original intended recipient of the joke doesn't need to understand it is ignoring how communication works.
You're using the exact same argument as those dudes who say racist/sexist things and then say "gosh can't you understand a joke?" when people get upset. Please don't.

@noodlemaz@mstdn.games @donw@mastodon.coffee @inthehands@hachyderm.io the resources required to manufacture and ship a plastic grocery bag are much lower than for a paper bag or a cloth bag, so in some situations the plastic bag could be seen as more environmentally friendly.
This argument does ignore the need for renewability in manufacture and the likelihood that the bag can actually be recycled into something useful.

@bucknam@mastodon.social we didn't summit or anything. Just the trail from Echo Lake to Chicago Lakes. Would have loved to continue on to the summit, but that's a 16 mile round trip and we didn't have time.

@bucknam@mastodon.social oh damn. That's where we were hiking this morning. We left by 11am. Super humid and cloud cover, but nothing that held lightning yet.

This is fantastic. If you like both Math and DnD, take a watch.
Warning, it's PDEs. Lots of PDEs. So "if you like math" takes on a really special meaning. How much do you like wave equation modification and fourier transforms?

Here's a really cool picture of its visible spectrum

@phocks@bne.social but the golden handcuffs! You need to feel sorry for the people who got almost zero percent interest on their house loans because they can't get it again when they want to move to a different place!

I've got all my plants under buckets or tarps so they should be good tonight, but I don't know what I'll do tomorrow night. The peaches will just do what they do, I guess

Dude, go be edgy and insulting somewhere else. Nobody asked for you to just come up and dump your issues on other people.
This is childish.

Hey #woodworking folks!
I got a question for ya.
How would you estimate the safe load for L brackets?
Steel with triangle braces. Going through drywall into studs with #14 x 2.5" lag screws.
8 brackets holding up the wood (another 3 are slightly too low. Not sure if I can easily move them up)
Another note, for a few of them the drywall had maybe a 1/4" gap between it and the stud. I screwed things down so they were tight, but tried to avoid bending/cracking the drywall noticeably.

Magic cards
@boscoandpeck@universeodon.com @jordan@sometimes.social agree. It's supply and demand. The non-foils are only found in Collector Boosters (I think) and so are much much rarer than the foils which come in every deck.
Combine that with some people try to only use non-foils due to the curling issue.
