My lovely neighbor across the street has quite possibly the perfect Kentucky bluegrass lawn. Has been impeccably maintaining it for the decades I’ve been here. We on the other hand have ripped out 80% of our grass & she has been looking across the street at our mature, native, xeric landscape for 20 years now. Last week she decided to rip out most of her lawn too. The drought is too much for it. Going to go native. I’m proud of her! If she is willing to do this, I bet your neighbor might, too.

My brother’s e-bike is saving the day for me as I gradually return to cycling after my back started crumbling to dust a month ago *and* as I recover from some surgery a week ago. It lets me move my body in a way that is beneficial and low-impact, and gives me boosts when I pedal so I can still get to places I enjoy. 1/2

The Little Free Library we host is still going strong. I tend to it every other morning or so, organizing it roughly by category and weeding out the religious tracts someone keeps trying to insert here. My brother in Christ if people want religion there are at least three churches within walking distance. This is a place for potboilers, romance novels, fantasy, science fiction, do-it-yourself tomes, and Very Gay Literature. 🗡️🌹🧌👽🛠️🦄🌈

RE: @TodePond@mas.to

This is true for me in my graphic design work as well: repetition brings a depth of awareness of elements and process that would be lost if I automated my practice.

Since I can’t ride a bike for a couple of weeks I spent some time today cleaning up my roadie so it won’t feel too neglected. I’ve got over 20,000 miles logged on this lil’ steelie!

Credit bureaus give away the game when they tell you your credit score has *decreased* simply because you are taking out a new line of credit. They are a scam, a grift set up to harvest and resell your information, and should be banned or so highly regulated that any unauthorized use/leak of your information should result in — let's say — a direct payout to you of no less than $10 million.

@Artemis201@mstdn.social took me three tries to get to the top of that one! It sure is pretty up there, though. The weather seems a bit more changeable in that part of the range for some reason.

The first time I attempted to summit Mount Massive we were about 200 meters from the summit on a ridge and the clouds rolled in, uncharacteristically early. We could hear the ice axes on our backs humming. We promptly bailed down one side of the ridge on a snowfield, glissading about 400 meters in just a few minutes to get out of danger. Probably the scariest on-mountain event I ever had.

@rootschange @tayfonay A year ago I’d never experienced this. But I’ve had three conversations with government and nonprofit clients in large meetings this year where they just throw out how they’re using AI to either edit public-facing content about complex technical topics or to drive high-level discussions about them. It took a lot of willpower to be tactful in explaining why these were Very Bad Ideas and not just instead blow up at them in rage about it.

@ascentale@sfba.social @oheso@ieji.de @bikenite@fedigroups.social One thing I would advise is to not wash your bike with pressure washer, as it can force water into places that you won’t want it (shifter cable housings, scratches in paint which will make it flake off sooner) and displace lubricants out of places where you do want them (wheel hubs, especially). I use a garden hose sprayer, sponge, dish soap, and (for the drivetrain) an old stiff toothbrush.
