mastodon 4.7.2I'm Don. I live in Arlington Virginia ("Occupied DC" as far as I'm concerned. Retro-retrocession now!) and get up to a variety of nerdy things. I was very proud of We Love DC and wrangling authors and websites was good practice for parenting.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io It’s been over thirty years but I still remember the disgruntled silence that settled over the room in my intro to environmental science class. The professor had just told the class that if the bag is one-use and will simply be recycled/discarded that choosing plastic was the lower-impact decision.

I’d far prefer they support a code that opens an alternative appearance and set of data.

But sure, if you use it more than once to bring home groceries the calculus changes.
But I don’t think he was off the mark on the assumption that most people don’t do any reuse whether it’s plastic or paper bags.
@Brendan@zenarca.de My 2012 Mazda only opens the drivers door on push one, push again does all. My wife’s 2016 Honda has a configuration option for the unlock when you touch the handle and the fob is nearby. I was surprised when she wanted it set to all doors but it’s nice she feels safe.

@jcrabapple@dmv.community I worked for a number of years with a tiny Chinese woman with the thickest Jamaican accent you’ve ever heard. We met initially when I walked into her office to ask directions - it was a new building for me - and when she turned and answered my question I was unsure if it was a prank or if I was having a stroke.
@atpfm@mastodon.social I know I’m whining to the choir here, but does nobody at Apple vacation with people they want to share photos with who aren’t family? Family sharing is fine for me and my wife but we’re vacationing with another family.
We can iMessage each other but that quality is degraded and it’s kind of a hassle. Shared photo album? Same degraded quality.
I wouldn’t think too much about it if Apple didn’t love service revenue so much. Why do they leave all this revenue on the table?

@msbellows @billgoats I just borrow and download the epub, feed it through Calibre and load it on whatever ereader I want to use. Somewhere on mobileread there are threads about downloading rather than direct send to kindle

@tilton @lisamelton It’s sort of the democratization of the same new-shiny-tool obsession that most coders have had for the thirty years I’ve been a programmer. Now the call is coming from outside the house, but I’d wager I have not had 7 consecutive days in those three decades where a fellow programmer didn't sniff “why aren't you using X yet?” about some toolchain component or framework.

It is hard for me to come to any other conclusion than that they'd be perfectly fine with folks just noping out if the alternative is m.s growth.

@ismh I agree completely, but is that really the debate going on? Maybe it's a function of the crowd I run in, but I feel like it's really more “this base model plus a keyboard attachment is 30% more than a macbook air, why am I still unable to do these other things?”
Being able to just run iphone/ipad apps on my mac now is great but I don't think they did themselves any favors in this skirmish with that capability either.
Gruber compared it to bike/car but there's way less price overlap there

But now we’ve got management haranguing employees to use this ephemeral technology. I don’t get it.
“Hey we got you this thing to make you more productive and we’re gonna watch comparative performance and if you’re falling behind we’re gonna have words” would at least make business sense. This is mirror universe shit.
