Just blocked FIFA and world cup tags :(

Probably the only sport event I have followed since I was little.

They have turned it into a sad decadent cabaret for the rich.

Don't care who lifts the cup, they have all lost.

This is the day. I will be moving my trusty steed over to debian 13 (hopefully all the major real-world bugs have been ironed out).

So far, things are going great. Hard to believe this system started on debian 7, and dist-upgrade is all I have done. This last bump might be tough though. I have been switching DEs a lot so there are a lot of warnings about files that don't exist ... fingers crossed.

Privacy or Security ? Too many hardware and software companies are forcing consumers to choose one or the other. This is a false choice. Choose security and they install malware that erodes your privacy. Choose privacy, and they compromise your security, which ultimately destroys your privacy anyway. An excellent investigation by Gamers Nexus. Smart devices should be banned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9uefFYe6bM #UsersAreFodder #greed #BadTechnology #EvilCompanies #LG #GamersNexus #SmartTech

I have been using aptitude since forever. Today, however, I needed to search through installed packages and remembered just how unintuitive the syntax is!

A few articles deep I learnt that good old apt-get has a new API through apt and it appears to be designed for clarity and ease of use. Should I switch?

Which tool do you use? If there is a specific reason besides habit I would be very curious to hear it!

What did we expect ? We are training our students for mediocrity and that is exactly what we are getting.

"AI native" college graduates are hitting the workplace -- and, as experts warned, bosses are finding their performance disappointing.

A lot of us are boycotting the world cup. Don't care about it. At all.

Please tag your world cup posts so our feeds can filter them out thank you !

Because real service where you deal with your customer face to face can't accept "You are absolutely right! I have incorrectly identified you as a criminal and was about to fine you..." as a valid response.

AI is not ready for all products. Certainly not products where quality matters. Maybe as clippy 2.0 or an IDE suggestion engine or a documentation reference engine.

Great technology but greed is making us use it won't.

@aspragg@ohai.social I was searching for name and version number only. I have been using Debian since 2004 or so and apt did not exist then. Didn't like apt-get so the way I learnt to install/upgrade was aptitude, which I use as a CLI rather than a TUI.

Much respect for your contributions to making emacs usable for forever-noobs like me! I think last time I used cape I couldn't understand how cape-dabbrev is different from dabbrev (I understand now...). I will give it a go too! I am especially struggling with my python vterm REPL though. I see a wall-of-text dump of all the candidates from the code as well as the REPL buffer! Any pointers?

@OrionKidder@mas.to Yeah. Very sad for our new cohorts of students who not only use machines to lift weights, but have been told this is the only way one lifts weights. You are not only weak, but you also don't know that you are weak. I think the students are doing whatever it takes to get grades. It is the companies that aggressively market AI for everything that have ruined their lives/careers. I am expecting a massive intellectual regression in the coming decades.

@tao@mathstodon.xyz Thanks for sharing. Have indeed noticed this in my field too. Very helpful in exposing ideas you may not have been familiar with. But its sycophancy means you have to be very careful at all times about hallucinations. In problems where you have a good grasp of the literature this is a synergetic collaboration, but in problems where you are less confident it is indeed a minefield and tends to make tasks take longer.

1/ Looking at 2-bed rents in Cambridge/Somerville : $3.5–4k/month, 3x income requirement ! That puts you at ~$140k/year just to qualify. At that income, you could carry a mortgage on a condo in many parts of the country, and honestly, in parts of this area too. So why are we all still renting? #boston #cambridgeMA #propertyMafia #rentierIncome
