@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io Over the past 30 years I've been to a lot of seminars in molecular biology and adjacent fields. Not a single time do I remember EVER hearing a verbal citation of "the Li group" or ”the Tanaka group" or "the Kim group." Always but always "a Chinese group," "a Japanese group," "a Korean group." Sometimes? Even when those labs are based in the United States. Needless to say, German and Italian and Belgian laboratories all have leaders with names. I have been listening closely and I cannot recall a counterexample in either category. Perhaps my disgust has led me to overinterpretation. But I always hear a distinct "they all sound alike to TO ME" versus "namedropping namedropping you should know these Europeans who hosted my sabbatical, no matter how obscure"

@drew hits the nail on the head as usual. Torvalds, on AI in the kernel: "We do open source because it results in better technology, not because of religious reasons." This statement—morally rigid, hypocritically pseudo-apolitical, arguing from authority, and irrationally ignoring evidence—overtly and redundantly meets the criteria to be dismissed as a religious statement. https://drewdevault.com/blog/AI-in-Linux/ #noai

OMG you guys holy CRAP nerdgasm WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME ABOUT #HELIBOARD So I've been on #GrapheneOS for three years. Never touched Android before that. I installed OpenBoard on day one, based on what I took to be the consensus. Liked it very much. Today it started acting up. Baffling. Decided to uninstall/reinstall. Not listed in #fdroid ... because the repo has not been touched in FOUR YEARS Cut to me trying FlorisBoard (also impressive, except it currently lacks text suggestions, dealbreaker) and settling on HeliBoard. Not only does it cram in ALL KINDS of how-did-I-live-without-it functionality, but the design exposes all of it with gentle discoverability. tl;dr Staying on Debian Stable

So it's been an interesting summer of experiment. I've been on #Debian Stable for ages and loved it from the beginning. I've dabbled for the first time this summer in #Fedora (easiest and safest #AsahiLinux install on a discarded Macbook). And I finally got time (and lots of help! thanks!) to try out #Guix #GuixSystem as a distro.

Impressed with Fedora, rock solid. As a GNOME user it would take awhile to notice it wasn't Debian. I bet people alias apt=dnf. But it made me realize: the update pace on Fedora vexed me.

Debian "Stable" doesn't mean Debian doesn't crash. Debian Stable means Debian doesn't CHANGE.

And when I finally got my caveman skull (partially, crudely) around the Guix/Nix paradigm, I realized it was just Arch with extra steps. I yearn for the mathematical formality of a declarative Lispy config. It may not have been worth the extra complexity and learning curve, but it definitely was not worth leaving the Stable lifestyle. I do love to tinker, but I love to have a simple familiar boring system. I guess more.

What drew me to Guix in the first place was the promise of reproducible portability: it is very important that the Stack of Laptops all behave the same. But I have in fact enjoyed this very thing for years, with a bash script. If you've read this far, could you just validate me here? Tell me you approve of my imperative setup? 😆

@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social Mere words cannot capture our disgust and sorrow. But words perfectly capture facts and historical parallels. Death squads with impunity on our own streets, under cover of cowardice and secrecy. Abroad, death camps to which they ship the most vulnerable, purposely selecting the innocent. All flagrantly illegal, but covered with the sheen of legality by a complicit judiciary, media, legislatures, general institutional pliancy. The worst of Stalinism, of Nazism, of every flavor of fascism from every continent and decade. Say it and say it again. It happened here, and innocents bleed in our dungeons. Let us put aside our feelings and find the courage to say the words.

The story of my favorite #IronMaiden t-shirt.

Córdoba, Argentina, January 2006, in a small boutique selling only black heavy metal t-shirts. The two kids behind the counter (who, except for mother tongue, could be switched with another pair of pimply-faced third-generation Italian kids from my town in Ohio) are nervous.

"Quiero una camisa negra sobre /ˈaɪərn ˈmeɪdən/ por favor."

(Silence. Their faces say "Es español?")

"/ˈaɪərn ˈmeɪdən/?"

(Panic building)

"🎜 I LEFT 🎝 ALONE / 🎜 MY MIND 🎝 WAS BLANK"

"¡Ahh ahh ahh, /'iɾon 'maiden/!"

@cstross@wandering.shop @grumble209@kolektiva.social There are two rhetorical approaches to ... any dire situation in sociopolitical collapse. With much respect Mr. @QasimRashid@mastodon.social Esq. is lawyering. Framing the analysis with provocative questions to the jury. (A worthy approach, but it risks the audience taking the questions literally.) Meanwhile a pedantic autist (ahem) might simply point at the naked emperor and say "These performances are meant to reinforce cultural racism and violence. Every tough-guy cop must pretend to have trembled, post-mortem, before the cosmic terror of the raping murdering Black American savage, never mind he was an innocent child. More cops more guns more more more save us! This performance is a component of the narrative of national victimhood, the culture of Dateline Primetime Predators journalism, of 'Freedom' as the Redemptive Cathartic Violence of the Sleeping Gentle Giant Awakened to Its Righteous Anger, e. g. 'Boston Strong' means 'you poor victims of Islamic terror remain under martial law this evening while we fill these young Muslim bodies with two hundred bullets without due process.'" (Another worthy approach, but it risks the audience getting lost in run-on sentences and walking away with a sense of shrill neurosis)

@foaylward@genomic.social OMG this is the best story. Everybody has seen the bacterial growth curve: https://www.microbesnhealth.com/2024/10/growth-curve-batch-continuous-and.html The first part is "sigmoidal," S shaped. It starts exponential, but tapers off to a plateau. They stop growing. (Bacterial "growth" just means cell division.) How do they know? Well, each of them secretes a low level of signalling molecules into the culture. When the environmental concentration of that molecule reaches a certain threshold, they all sense it and stop dividing. Because if they kept going, they'd quickly exhaust environmental nutrients and then they all die. So they make a truce, and they all cooperate to stop. This curve lies in stark contrast to @hausfath@fediscience.org's global human curve, which is right before the point where everything runs out and you observe a sudden crash.

Did you know you can easily change application icons in Linux? In Plasma it's straightforward through the menu editor, but you can also do it via desktop files in the terminal. I have always loved the @librewolf@chaos.social icon they use on their Mastodon page. It includes the Pride flag with the Intersex and Trans Pride colors. I highly recommend swapping to it! Quick method: Download the icon to somewhere you keep it, like: ~/Pictures/icons/applications/.Copy the desktop file if it doesn't already exist in ~/.local/: cp /usr/share/applications/librewolf.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/Edit your desktop file: nano ~/.local/share/applications/librewolf.desktopChange the Icon= line to point to your new icon pathSave and refresh the desktop database or log out and back in.
