@callisto@disabled.social @harald@mementomori.social @darwinwoodka@mastodon.social @ottaross@mastodon.social You need to go to Settings - Search. Then at the bottom you have "search shortcuts", there you can click "Add" to add a new one. Name it "NoAI DDG" or whatever and paste https://noai.duckduckgo.com/%s In the URL field. (Right-click copy that since Mastodon sometimes hides the https part) Then you can go to the top where it says "Default search engine" and select the new one you just created. It's a bit different in the mobile version but similar enough.

@thibaultamartin Agreed, I am still using FF because it's still the least bad and most maintained browser but this will be what makes me jump ship eventually. Lots of people are less tolerant than me and already have. If at least they had one master switch to disable all that, but no, it's like 7 settings at this point and they tend to reset when it updates...

@vie@hachyderm.io I think you probably see another crowd than I do, or I'm in a bubble that resembles my own views, or something. Because what I see (and my own position) is that software engineers of experience recognize them as tech debt accelerators and a massive security risk, and want as little to do with them as possible. For my part, I am already saying that if things really do go the way of more LLMs everywhere, I will be considering a very early retirement. I do not want to pick up that mess.

@cruftbox@theforkiverse.com I disagree with the last part, but if that's what you have learned, you do you. For me, if something from the past brings you joy, and doesn't prevent you from learning new things, why would it be bad? Speaking for myself, my entire professional life is learning new techniques and pushing the state of the art. I keep nostalgia for my hobby time, it helps me stay grounded and remember where we came from. Also helps me make peace with the current trend of enshittification in tech.

@StompyRobot @tojiro Not wanting to put words in Brandon's mouth, but I think the crucial part is, he's not saying he wants AI to do the second list instead of the first. AI could just not do either of them. Speaking for myself: I enjoy the same things and dislike the same things, but I will gladly continue doing the things I dislike (in part because as you say, there are positive things to be gained from doing them) but why on Earth would I want AI to do the things I enjoy the most?

"Même pour un petit speech comme ça, il faut se préparer un petit peu à l'avance, faut pas monter sur scène en disant "Je vais dire un truc intelligent" " ... ça sonne comme une confession, non? @joshbressers@infosec.exchange I'd also say lots of single maintainer projects are probably abandoned. This is just my impression, but in the last year, the PRs I've sent to single maintainer repos have generally been unanswered. I really wonder how a project can survive that. Sure I can fork it and add my bug fixes and features, but the official web page still points to the old abandoned repo. New users will go there. If the maintainer doesn't even reply to posts about passing maintainership, what can you do?

@teajaygrey @stefano You mean BSD code itself? I hope there are strong policies to prevent it (for contributors to follow), otherwise sooner or later it will happen. Related: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@skylark13/115842600214466205 But even if it doesn't affect (infect) the code, it is a huge net-negative for users trying to find information to troubleshoot issues by themselves.

@stefano I know you know this, just reiterating to further depress myself and others I guess: This is sadly not specific to BSD or any one piece of knowledge. AI models don't 'get' anything. They have no concept of knowing anything, and SEO pages generated by AI containing incorrect information are polluting the training sets of AI models, so nothing good can come of it. The video linked from this thread eloquently makes that point, among many others. https://akkoma.xn--pikabl-0xa.se/objects/34faab37-a455-44f7-abeb-d0b937cd479a

@shine @paoloredaelli @thibaultamartin Interesting! Thanks for the recommendation. Looks like I looked at it a while back (the site was a visited link) but didn't try it for some reason. I'll give it a try! Do they remove the AI stuff? I didn't see specific mention of that but maybe I missed it. I'd love for FireFox to just not add this stuff or make it easy for us to opt out, so we wouldn't need to look for alternatives, but this looks very interesting regardless.

@denschub@mastodon.schub.social Thank you. After reading your message, I migrated all my personal repos from github to codeberg (including my website since codeberg has pages too, and it's even simpler than github pages since there's no deploy job that needs to run! -- not that I have anything interesting there for now 😅). Codeberg's migration tool works very well, and it migrates the repo's wiki, issues, releases and more. I was impressed. Going forward I will only use github to work on PRs of other forked repos.

@acegikmo@mastodon.social 😍 In our engine we can printf from shaders, with extended format specifier syntax for vectors and matrices. We can also create debug primitives from shaders. Extremely helpful. It's often the first thing I implement when I start using a new engine, along with shader hot recompliation if it's not already there. Iteration time and ease of debugging are super important in my opinion.
