I said a very similar thing a while back here: https://shellsharks.com/notes/2023/09/20/engagement-on-mastodon People think social media is a town square where someone can yell out to everyone and bystanders are forced to listen, but Fedi is not like that. It’s little social gatherings, small street corners and other small-scale serendipitous encounters. You meet people at human-scale. One at a time or sometimes in small groups. Viral “boosting” events can happen but are rare (try cat pics for virality)

@khleedril @tchambers @anildash I came here to suggest the blogroll as well, but yeah, I’ve also added quite a bit to it over the years. The nice thing is you could have section of the blogroll that you keep fairly small (~7) of your indieweb pals. I have 15 in my top section 🤷‍♂️. I agree though that linking to other places on the web, specifically other indie sites has become more and more crucial to keeping the web healthy. I do what I can I think 😃

The group itself never *really* took off, but I liked the name so I grabbed a domain and the rest is history. I grabbed a .com because it seemed like the right choice at the time. In hindsight a .net mighta been better but w/e 🤷‍♂️.

@ufal @_elena I think everyone's experience is different here. I do think people need to rewire themselves a bit when they come here. You can't expect virality, it's hard to post something that gets lots of organic "engagement". But it's kinda like just being in the world. I would never leave my house and yell some thoughts out and expect people to come talk to me. I just have to go up to people and chat with them. Try just finding something on your Timeline you like and engaging with it.

@alextecplayz @_elena Just my opinion, and I waffle on this, but my current thinking is that "big tech”'s emphasis on algorithms to deliver people's micro-blogging/social media content has made too many folks completely reliant on the algo-feeds to bring them stuff. Here, you curate a feed which is volume and content-appropriate and tend it like a garden. Sure, reach and discoverability take a hit, but I find the higher fidelity, more manageable feed is just - healthier.

@_elena I agree with you, but the reality for many who try to establish themselves here is they *do* get little/no “engagement" on things they post. This is due to low-discoverability and just low follower count. But it’s just not how Fedi works. If you want “engagement”, then ENGAGE. Like, it's easy to get stars, replies and even folks following you if you're the one to reach out first and reply to someone elses post, rather than waiting for stuff you post into the void to get replied to.
