@quixoticgeek@social.v.st @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange @hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange @catsalad@infosec.exchange It's almost certainly an electronic terminal, not the carbon-paper thingy. More and more, the server brings a terminal to you. However, the custom is still that to signal you are ready to pay, you put your credit card on the bill (or inside the folio holding the bill, sticking out so it is visible). I sat for quite a while waiting to pay before remembering this step.

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st @catsalad@infosec.exchange @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange @hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange The origin of the custom is darker than you think. The Pullman Car Company built sleeper cars (wagons) with dining rooms for railroads shortly after the US civil war. The innovation was that the car and the hospitality was not supplied by the railroad operator, but by the Pullman company. Mr. Pullman "hired" recently freed enslaved people to staff the cars and provide service, but didn't pay them! Or paid them "a pittance" (depends on source). The workers were then forced to work for tips from wealthy passengers. This custom became engrained. Service industry jobs could expect a customer provided gratuity.

My last US card had a limit of $70k. I could have bought a car, if the dealer accepted plastic.

I had a weird bug in the Display manager in Ubuntu 26.04 (Gnome with Wayland). I couldn't save changes to my monitor settings -- resolution, arrangement, etc.

Here's the solution:

rm .config/monitors.xml

log out and log back in again

#ubuntu2604 #linux
