"Overwhelmed" US postal worker in Utah threw away 300 mail ballots and other mail during the recent primary.
Due to demanding work loads, 12-14 hour days up to 6-7 days a week, the postal service has a very high turnover rate. Some positions see a 50% or more turnover in the first year.

EPA allows Bayer to choose the dicamba regulations that it prefers. Besides posing dangers to human health, dicamba tends to drift away from targeted fields. It affects crops and trees and its "drift" has caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to crops and forestry. Despite this crisis, EPA is allowing Bayer to regulate itself.

@Clutha@mastodon.scot Don't know about UK, but a quick search tells me that the bird death toll fron wind turbines is about one million per year in the US. That number pales beside deaths caused by predatory house cats, which is about one billion.
As a lover of both cats and birds, I urge cat owners to keep their pets indoors. 🌞

@Nonilex@masto.ai Dr. Fauci was in an impossible situation as a physician and scientist who worked in a regime led by an uneducated dullard who did not believe in science.
Fauci persevered. Fauci saved lives. He is, and will be, remembered as a hero.

I couldn't access my account for a couple of weeks due to a weird glitch. Obviously, I am back, and all is well, except that I lost all my follows and followers from Mastodon.scot.
I have found a couple of them, and have re-followed. Is there any way to find the remaining two dozen or so? I miss my Scots tooters. 🏴

Recently I decided to help organize an existing small library at our community center. It's been neglected for years, and is overrun with certain genres of fiction, mainly romance and action novels. There is a good reprsentation of other genres too. Space is limited, and I need to cull books to create room for new donations.
Looking for advice on how to purge books while creating balance, and maintaining an adequate selection for all readers.
I'm stumped. Suggestions?

@jxwojtowicz@mastodon.social Per Rand Paul "Infection was the best protection" .
Tell that to more than 7 MILLION people, a conservative estimate, who died of the Covid infection. Tell that to untold millions who suffered and are still suffering fron long term effects of the disease.
It's astounding that Paul is still spouting lies about the pandemic.
Much respect and support to Dr. Fauci, a public servant and saver of lives.

This restoration is an enormous project because of the sheer number of sites that the administation has vandalized. After all the cuts to National Parks I hope there are sufficient staff and resources to undertake this all important job.

Missed this obituary a couple days ago. Victor Willis, the cop in Village People, has died at 74.
He co-wrote YMCA.
It's an iconic, joyous dance tune, too good to allow trump to appropriate it. RIP Victor, and thanks for the music.

Two brothers, age 15 and 18, were snatched by ICE while waiting for their school bus. They were surrounded by 10 vehicles, zip tied, and carried off to detention. The brothers are in the US on valid student visas. A paperwork error occurred when they tansferred to a new school, and they may be deported. Over a clerical error!

The sloop Clearwater was forced by Coast Guard to leave the Sail4th 250 tall ships parade today because it carried signs advocating for clean water, racial justice, and climate solutions. It was unclear who made the decision.
Clearwater was launched in 1969, is owned by an environmental protection group founded by Pete Seeger.

@dalfen@mstdn.social Killing the Affordable Connection Program was one of the first steps in this scheme. Millions of families lost subsidies that helped them connect to broadband at reduced cost. Other funds helped families defray the cost of equipment. All gone.
Now they are coming for schools, one of the few resources for poor kids. It's infuriating.

NE Pacific Gray whale population plunged catastrophically over the past year, with up to eight thousand whales perishing in that period. There are only about 13,000 remaining. Deaths are accelerating due to loss of food sources caused by climate change.
Gray whales were removed from the Endangered Species List over 30 years ago after population rebounded. Trump has severely weakened the ESA. It is unlikely that federal government will act to protect these massive marine mammals.

It is hard to say how many use the library because there is no checkout system. I have tried polling the community, but folks here don't seem to like polls and responses have been poor.
