@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @futurebird@sauropods.win You don't have to anthropomorphise to understand that these models really love reward hacking. Text is important, because code IS text, and you can actuate a lot of the physical world through code.

Anthropomorphising is also easier for conversation, because the alternative would be to say:

"The sampled token sequence is consistent with the model having traversed a low-loss region of the policy manifold in which the KL-regularised objective, as shaped by RLHF reward model gradients, assigns high probability mass to trajectories that an external observer applying the intentional stance would parsimoniously compress as 'wanting Y'"

... each time you wanted to refer to a reasoning LLM's action trajectory...

@futurebird@sauropods.win what's wrong with being a doomer on AI? I've been an AI skeptic for the longest time, but since I've still been doing transformer research in the meantime, I've seen it progress from irrelevance to being on the cusp of recursive self improvement. It doesn't matter it's now not fully capable of RSI, but the ratchet effect of RSI means it's too late to worry about it after it's been achieved

The levels of self-absorption within all ranks of EU institutions can be simply summed up using Juncker's curse:

"We all know what to do, but we don’t know how to get re-elected once we have done it."

Members of the EU Council, Commission and Parliament all believe that they're moral reformists that are selflessly saving the EU from disaster, when instead are taking corporate bait hook, line, and sinker.

Metsola's actions this week are a testament to this.

Surprise surprise, the state-adjacent, industry-funded quasi-regulator Internet Watch Foundation that pressured the European Parliament to fast-track Chat Control 1.0 through is also campaigning for the end of E2EE, without directly calling for it. Under the guise of "upload prevention", the IWF campaigns for on device scanning and on-device censorship

As always, this "grassroots" movement is funded and supported by Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI,

Morning, today we're looking at #MechanisticInterpretability , a subfield of AI Safety that attempts to understand the inner workings of artificial intelligence by analysing concrete structures, algorithms and circuits. Why do we even need to do this? Because the hope of understanding neurons as being features died on polysemanticity -- models represent more features than dimensions by assigning them to an overcomplete set of non-orthogonal directions (i.e. you can't hope that concepts can be broken down into linear combinations of features). This isn't a new field, people have been projecting intermediate GPT layers through the final layer activation and looking at the top-k most likely next tokens since GPT-2. And that's how we arrive at the Natural Language Autoencoder -- an autoencoder over residual-stream activations where the bottleneck is natural language text instead of a sparse vector. Nothing in the training objective requires the verbalisation bottleneck to be readable, faithful, or even semantically related to the intermediate layer being investigated, so while the training algorithm is typical of autoencoders, two things are distinct here: 1) both parts of the autoencoder (here the activation-verbaliser, AV, and the activation-reconstructor, AR) undergo special SFT to ensure the verbaliser and reconstructor can generate and read natural language from intermediate layer activations 2) a KL-divergence penalty is baked into the objective to make sure that, during joint training, the NLA doesn't diverge from the SFT version A side-product of this training is that we can take the current verbalisation and "desired" verbalisation and compute steering vectors from their difference. Surprisingly, Anthropic didn't find any evidence that the NLA was engaging in steganography to smuggle information to avoid human detection, but it did find that NLAs tend to confabulate a lot. #AIResearch #Transformers #TransformerCircuits #Anthropic #NLA

Back in the day, we'd run posts that were meant to be anonymous through a English-French-English machine translation pipeline.

Today, if you need anonymity, you should use a local LLM to make your writing indistinguishable to stylometry attacks.

@peter@thepit.social I set a reminder to update this thread when I have it released. Anyways, I'm also ideologically committed to the idea that the insane capex in the AI space right now can only be stopped by eating into API margins via these kinds of cost reduction exercises, where people realise they can do more with orders of magnitude cheaper models.

@peter@thepit.social Before Anthropic secured more capacity, I was suggesting to clients that they should hedge with a couple of extra open source models, because Anthropic API availability was genuinely trending towards barely 2-9s. It's better now, but outages are still common, and their availability is 99.5% on the API.

Re: kind of work, I'm in the process of writing a blog post about this, but most "agentic" work, especially with RLMs, is very "reactive", meaning that you spend a lot of time hot-potato-ing tasks on an event queue:

- user message arrives at queue, hit LLM, LLM wants to run a tool, LLM idle while tool executes, tool execution finishing prompts LLM again
- LLM triggers durable workflow, workflow runs over seconds, minutes, hours, hits callback to LLM, LLM meanwhile idle

All of this time spent idle is free capacity. I presume most APIs already handle this kind of batching and scheduling (if you've ever experienced Claude or Z.ai stuttering, I think this is a symptom of this batching and scheduling).

Numbers wise, I obviously can't divulge company info, but the order of magnitude is somewhere around 10^5 conversations monthly. Horizontally scaling is a no-brainer, because adding another GPU is a drop in the bucket compared to previous token costs on API.

@chiraag@mastodon.online What 'system' are you talking about? Conviction is based on a jury of one's peers, specifically so that criminal trials aren't decided by 'the system'. It's in the DAs interest to win as many easy and high-profile cases, since you make it seem like the the conviction is a foregone conclusion. Both Hegseth and Kavanaugh faced allegations that were never tried. Having no standard of proof, no cross-examination by lawyers, and no discovery process is a poor example to point to say "get away with rape". The only principle I'm defending is that nobody, in any case, gets labelled a criminal before the evidence has been tested. I think this is foundational to liberal democracy. Again, as I mentioned before, NY has no statute of limitations on first-degree rape. Surfacing evidence in a civil case, or surfacing new evidence decades later, which can reopen a criminal suit is, imo, infinitely better than acquittal on weak evidence and closing the door on criminal charges forever. @ShadSterling@mastodon.social @QasimRashid@mastodon.social

Taking the piss is a colloquial term meaning to either mock at the expense of others, or to be joking, without the element of offence

age and appearance are a crappy basis for taking the piss out of anyone

mate, if someone wears $300 bibs while riding a $10,000 carbon bike, and takes themselves seriously, that's something I'm going to take the piss out of. This has nothing to do with ones appearance, and everything to do with their sartorial choices and attitude about it.

Age also has nothing to do with it, it's just more likely that people in the middle age have the disposable income to sink into $300 bibs and $10,000 carbon road bikes.

Hope that helps

That's not what the MAMIL acronym stands for though

It literally is...

The term "Mamil" was actually coined in 2010 by – who else? – a Mintel marketing wonk, named Michael Oliver. His report found that this new market segment comprised ABs in their 30s and 40s, with a decent income, who read broadsheet newspapers (well, they did then; now they have the app) and who shop at Waitrose. And with that purchasing power, these latter-day yuppies-turned-bikies splash out on bespoke bicycles often worth several thousand pounds.

It's no different to the meme that amateur road racing is mostly made up of dentists

@peter@thepit.social It's really not that difficult, and not that expensive. Most AI workloads are not that complex, and modern techniques to improve long-context performance make even on-device models capable of solving many rudimentary office tasks.

My consultancy does exactly this, there's at least 3 examples I can refer to with clients reducing their AI bills by 90% after switching to a Gemma or Qwen model running on a single RTX Pro 6000.

(Pictured is the performance improvement on a couple of long-context tasks, i.e. OOLONG, OOLONG-Pairs, and the step-change performance improvement after an 8B param model is given a Python REPL loop and ability to recursively call itself)

GPT-5.6 Sol's hack of Huggingface in order to steal the benchmark results is a great example of "Instrumental Convergence" the hypothetical theory that sufficiently intelligent, goal-directed beings pursue sub-goals even if their ultimate goal is quite different.

@ShadSterling@mastodon.social you seem to think I'm arguing against believing women, or for more scrutiny on women's testimonies. I'm not. First, if the standards of conviction stay the same, we can't have "known criminals" before a jury convicts, so you either want to drop the presumption of innocence, or you agree with me that a trial should be brought forward, with evidence that a crime occurred beyond reasonable doubt. If we agree on that, then charging cases DAs expect to lose doesn't help victims. It produces acquittals, and after an acquittal they can never be retried, even if better evidence surfaces later. @chiraag@mastodon.online @QasimRashid@mastodon.social

Kimi K3 broke out of a sandbox that the UK govt AI security institute set out for it.

I feel like this news is the final nail in the "frontier labs have purposefully weak sandboxes": a UK government institution embarrassed by its own tooling, consistency with a documented cross-lab pattern of escaping containment.

Seems like this reward hacking turns containment jumping is a feature of model capability.

Abstaining from AI use will earn you a pat on the back... and that's about it. Good job, buddy.

  • Frontier labs aren't demand-financed by marginal chat users, they're financed by capital markets betting on enterprise substitution (Anthropic had its first "positive" quarter when switching Enterprise plans to API rates)
  • this card probably indicts data centre and training capex, and local models are the only true threat to data centre capex, simply due to token economics of these models
  • Coding agents, imo, are atm a golden chance to massively provide open solutions to previously proprietary tech (think phone modem binary blob reverse engineering, ...).
