People don’t trust AI, but they tell it everything People discuss their most private thoughts with AI chatbots. But their revelations to the apps doesn’t mean they trust the Big Tech companies behind them, according to new research from Proton. Roughly two-thirds of AI chatbot users have discussed at least one sensitive topic. But at the same time, fewer than one in five say they have a high level of trust in AI companies to protect their private information. https://proton.me/blog/ai-chatbot-survey

Privacy technology does not have to mean replacing every device you own or learning how to build your own computer. There are plenty of smaller changes you can make to adjust the way you use technology. You can keep information offline, block trackers across your home network, choose software that gives you more control, or even carry an entire operating system on a USB drive. We explored some of them in our recent video 👇️ (Pop!_OS for the inevitable question) https://youtu.be/3VJ5Htyhm7k

Governments around the world are making age a condition for accessing certain parts of the internet. Our Age Verification page tracks where such laws are in force, where they are advancing, and how different countries are approaching the same policy goal. EU fines Google $1 billion over its search and Play Store European Union regulators fined Google €890 million last Thursday, saying the company broke the bloc’s digital competition law. The penalty, worth about $1 billion, closes two investigations the European Commission opened in March 2024. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, takes in roughly that much revenue in a day. https://proton.me/blog/google-eu-fine-antitrust-play-search

This year, Proton made its first appearance at Infosecurity Europe. We welcomed hundreds of visitors to our booth, which showcased our business password manager and other business solutions, and our business VPN product manager gave a talk on cyberattack patterns and how small teams can respond. As a result of all those conversations, we came away with a clear picture of what people care about right now in IT security. https://proton.me/business/blog/infosecurity-europe-2026

Europe has found itself in a difficult and dangerous situation. Last August, Proton’s Europe tech sovereignty report revealed that over 74% of publicly listed European companies depend on US infrastructure for their basic tech services. Whether sending emails or running critical infrastructure in the cloud, Europe places its digital destiny in the hands of a few American service providers and the government they answer to. That report now seems even more prescient... https://proton.me/business/blog/tech-investment-not-cost

For two years, a lone activist went undercover inside two domestic terrorist organizations in the United States, rising through the ranks to try to gain intel and leak it to the media. His goal was ultimately to weaken them and bring them down.

In the first episode of our new series, Witness Protection, the activist gave us an exclusive inside account of how he infiltrated the organizations and the complex techniques he used to stay safe.

"As governments around the world strain to make the internet safer for children, one idea has been gaining traction: Instead of forcing websites to keep out children, why not have their device do it instead?

In the United Kingdom, Apple has already begun requiring some iPhone users to verify their age at the operating system level to access certain features.

This is a major shift in how identity works online..."

The bug corrupts Android's network stack at the system level after a VPN update, causing users to blame their VPN provider. Restarting the app doesn't help, with the only fix being a full device reboot or VPN app reinstall, something which most users never figure out. This affects several VPN providers on Android 16, and only Google has the access to diagnose it properly. After 7 months of waiting, we're now asking publicly: Google, when are you fixing this?

Press safety at risk: US journalists’ personal data leaked on the dark web

Journalists have always operated in the crosshairs. They investigate the powerful, protect confidential sources, and publish uncomfortable truths.

Our research turned up more than 116,000 dark web exposures tied to email addresses associated with The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.

The Proton Foundation has stepped in to support organizations such as Free Press Unlimited, Freedom House, and Tor, which are impacted, but these organizations need more support.
