@ifixcoinops@retro.social The real problem with flash, for websites, is that it doesn't handle different resolutions very easily. Which wasn't an issue when everyone was on 800x600, but explains why it started dropping off when people expected their site to work on phones, tables and desktops of different aspect ratios. That being said, I remember when people had entire businesses building drag and drop flash websites, before Wordpress took off.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk That's a fair assessment, I know someone who was using a LLM to automatically generate a blog and text for a podcast, then used another system to automatically generate the sound for that podcast, and then publish it. At no point was it checked by a human (to my knowledge). Filler in its most fundamental form. The word "content" describes it perfectly.

@egoldblatt@gardenstate.social @pafurijaz@mastodon.social That's probably true. But the idea that a community can only exist as long as huge numbers of people are providing their labor for free is a huge problem. I think people need to get used to the idea of paying for open source software, we pay for everything else that we find useful and if Linux is worthwhile we should be willing to pay for this as well.

@RueNahcMohr@infosec.exchange @chatcontrol@mastodon.social I'm sure politicians think they'll get exempted, and in fact one of the extracts from the bill had exemptions for politicians in it. But they should realize that you can't exempt a burner phone, pretty much by definition, and the people they're talking to won't have exemptions.

@paul@notnull.space @Greylinux@floss.social @jonah@mastodon.neat.computer I think Jonah has being sarcastic there. Like, yes, technically you could use a non-VPN VPN, but its still basically a VPN and if VPNs are banned, would probably still be illegal enough if whatever government is in power ever needs a pretext to just grab you.

@abstractcode @geekygirldawn Ultimately I think this is why LLMs are getting popular among coders. The GPT is always on tap for questions, it's not too busy, it won't get sarcastic with you and it doesn't use your questions against you later during performance reviews.

@Viss My feeling on these movements have recently been "meh". If a company decides to torpedo its quality, I'll just have to use other stuff. Every cloud has a silver lining, so while its annoying to have yet more problems with Windows systems, it does mean that it will be easier for Australia and the EU to reduce their dependence on Microsoft going forward.

@osma @abstractcode @geekygirldawn It's not a baseless worry if those people are writing your performance reviews and decide if you get to eat. I've seen people right in Mastodon complain about AI in the same paragraph they complain about needing to teach the juniors with absolutely zero sense of irony. EDIT: If what you want is for LLMs to be less popular in tech, step 1 is understanding why they're attractive to people in the first place.

@crazyeddie@mastodon.social @scherzog@mastodon.gamedev.place @lina@vt.social The worst part is that in benchmarks, Rust beats out C++ and is only very slightly slower than C (by 7%), but would probably be more secure and more reliable in practice. It might also be faster than C in production since it can better optimize itself.

@only_ohm@mas.to @egoldblatt@gardenstate.social @pafurijaz@mastodon.social Normal End User License Agreements also disclaim fitness for any purpose, but I think that's a threshold linux needs to cross if it wants to gain mass appeal. Like, you would never accept "unfit for any purpose" from your food, your furniture or your car, or anything else we rely on, but in software that's ok?

@davbram @sawaba @pluralistic@mamot.fr @iFixit That's one of the strangest parts of all this, at least to me, if one customer wants an absolutely massive order that might tank the business if it doesn't get paid for, then they have to pay up front for it, doesn't it just make sense?

@xssfox @aurynn It's interesting to see how people organize things. TBH it looks overengeneered to me as well. Ok, it's $1000 per month on the cloud. For that money you could go to Servers Australia and get a 48 core machine with 256GB of RAM and 2TB of Nvme storage and with 7TB of free bandwidth thrown in. This is for a dedicated machine, not a VPS, so each processor would probably outperform a vCPU as well. I think the cost to performance of cloud systems drops off sharply once you go beyond a small handful of small servers.

@Unsightly3055@universeodon.com @jon@social.vivaldi.net @EndeavourOS@mastodon.social I've seen more and more, for lack of a better word, Windows "distros" pop up recently. Where they're Windows install media that comes pre-altered so they don't have the telemetry and don't try to re-install it later. And if you're still a Windows user at this point, you absolutely should be running some kind of script to disable that stuff.

@DidiQ@mstdn.social One thing that always surprises me about discrimination in the past is the pettiness of it. Like, his superiors weren't getting anything by doing this, or making any money, they took extra time to go to extra trouble to demote this person. EDIT: It also shows what they thought of dead soldiers, if taking care of them is a punishment detail.

@Archivist@social.linux.pizza @crazyeddie@mastodon.social @scherzog@mastodon.gamedev.place @lina@vt.social I dug around for the article so I could reference it and I've linked it here. I'm referring to the second column of the first chart, which tracks runtime. https://thenewstack.io/which-programming-languages-use-the-least-electricity/ Their tests might be a bit simplistic, but even in more complex tests, Rust might be able to optimize more heavily in situations where C wouldn't be able to. It's annoying to realize, that, for example, PHP is 27 times slower than C.

@TaliaRinger@mathstodon.xyz I think people can only hate on Oppenheimer with the luxury of both hindsight and victory. At the time both the Germans and Japanese were carrying out horrific atrocities while taking more and more territory and the Germans had their own nuclear program. In the end the Allies won and the bomb only got used very late in the war; but none of the scientists working on it knew that this would be the case. I also think the media is tilted to give this kind of reaction. If the movie started with 30 minutes of Japanese and German atrocities and them talking about how they're going to take over America the movie would hit very differently.

@vet_ingenting@mastodon.social @timixretroplays@digipres.club There's a reason people aren't using Libre Office. Lots of reasons actually, but one really big one in that it lags so slowly even on high end machines that it's actually painful to use.

@vet_ingenting@mastodon.social @timixretroplays@digipres.club I normally set up a machine with ninite.com, so I used that. I'm not really interested in getting into the Linux debate, as there's no prize for me even if I spend my time on it. The reason Linux isn't taking off is because it has a general lack of polish and bug-testing, which used to be the major strength of Windows up until a few years ago. That's why I have big hopes that Valve can make the "year of Linux" happen.

@xanarin@ioc.exchange @ipg@wetdry.world That looks horrific. USB-C does 100W anyway. I would have chosen an internal battery that constantly trickle charges to make up the difference, or a separate power supply, anything, literally anything, than a custom USB standard.

@vet_ingenting@mastodon.social @timixretroplays@digipres.club I thought it was just me as well on the basis of "surely it can't be this way for everyone". But on reflection it's worth bringing up, because otherwise it would be getting a lot more uptake. So obviously *something* is going on, and I'm probably not the only person who tried it and got a bad impression.

@thedarktangent@defcon.social @Foxboron@chaos.social @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange Huh, Anubis is actually kind of brilliant, I'll have to integrate it. It feels like this would help on a security level as well, by stopping a lot of automated probing attacks. There's a few people saying it's evil but I don't see it. Partly because every single project gets that claim leveled against it now.

@wyliecoyoteuk@mastodon.org.uk @vet_ingenting@mastodon.social @timixretroplays@digipres.club I'm confident it's not the machine, as it doesn't have any problems otherwise. From what I remember, and this was a while ago, my main issue was that that some (but not most) clicks didn't register the first time among other things. Which doesn't make it unusable, but does make it incredibly annoying very quickly. For comparison on the day to day I use Microsoft Office 2007, which seems to respond instantly. Now did I use OpenOffice or LibreOffice, now I can't recall? I should try LibreOffice just to be 100% certain.
