I decided that today was the day to buy the three more Le Creuset mugs needed to make up a full rainbow 🙂

I was recently sent to a workshop by my day job on the new AI-first (-only?) development methodology they want us to switch to. I can't help but think that a system that has LLMs generating reams of code but puts the responsibility on engineers to understand all of it feels like a bit of a con - and unsafe. Like a software version of the idea that humans should be immediately ready to take over from self-driving cars when they can't cope with an emergency.

They don't produce emotion, real opinion, or even originality, just stuff. And we're being told that the pace of humanity in producing "stuff", "content", is the limiting factor and something to be overcome. That everyone's goal is "produce more, faster".
You might produce visual art, or music. You could be a writer on all manner of topics. You might get on camera to tell jokes, or give opinion. Whatever you do, *please* respect yourself enough to call it what it is. It's *not* mere "content".

And FWIW, this started before the AI/LLM boom. The idea that what someone does is just produce, with no further description of what, is incredibly dystopian. The fact that someone would self-describe that way feels deeply depressing. Maybe I'm just a romantic, I don't know, but all the same - I think we can do much better.
A thought/feeling that bubbled up over the weekend...
Many of us who work in software development are being told loudly and often how excited we should be that AI can* now write code - so we can concentrate on other things instead. It's weird to me that anyone would expect people who chose a profession/field of study based on their interest in an activity to be bubbly and enthusiastic about *not* getting to do it any longer.

Bashy's "How Black Men Lose Their Smile" from the 2024 album "Being Poor Is Expensive" is one of the realest things ever recorded. Phenomenal work.

We're going to Curacao next month! 🙌🏿
Of course I've been looking at info online, but wondered if any of the Mastodon nation had any tips or recommendations? I think we'll be trying snorkeling and scuba, and I'll definitely be looking for good street and scenery photo opportunities, plus great food of course! Also, if anyone knows where I might find used local records for sale, I'd love to come back with some souvenir wax!
My goodness, I'm so tired of AI. Every presentation, every department meeting, I'm being told how much we need to lean into AI, how much we need to make it a part of our regular routines. There's almost no other topic of conversation.
I do worry that we're absolutely about to fully surrender our thinking to it, right before the industry-wide job losses really bite, and the environmental damage starts to rack up elsewhere. Saying so, unfortunately, isn't popular.
For anyone who enjoys (or might enjoy) my DJing and wants to hear it live from the comfort of their own home, I've got two sets on this weekend at https://twitch.tv/airadam13 :
- Saturday 11am : Coffee & Donuts : one hour all-45s set, mixed genres
- Sunday noon : Vintage Vinyl : soul, funk, jazz, etc, all on wax!
(All times UK, both sets radio-friendly)
You can also always get my schedule @ http://events.airadam.com - with the timezone localised for you!

The smoke from the Dovestones fire is like nothing I've ever known short of being around building fires. I'm almost 40 miles away right now and the air absolutely stinks of smoke. You can see the haze in the air, and my eyes have been itching even when inside the house - which also smells. All because some idiots decides to let off fireworks on tinder-dry moorland, which they then laughed about.
Random gaming confessions/opinions
- I have never enjoyed a text adventure. In fact, I'm all but convinced that no-one else has either.
- I think the Street Fighter series is great but I've never been much good at any of them
- The Tekken series is way better than SF
- I've never played a GTA game past the very first, the top-down one
- All things considered, the Switch may be my all-time best gaming purchase. Eight-year-old me could never have imagined such a thing 🙂

@Oggie@woof.group Even if I think what someone is putting out is poor quality, it's something that is at least worthy of an accurate description. The "lorem ipsum" point is a good one!
There's a crazy storm with sheets of rain coming down, at nighttime, and yet in Manchester, people are riding bikes dressed in black with no lights at all 😔
Having to buy prescription sunglasses is so annoying - they're expensive up-front, and then they need re-lensing as your eyes change, instead of just being something you can keep. I'm currently in a dispute with a company who sent a pair back with a bent frame *and* a chip on a lens.
Have also chosen a new pair for a different style - and explicitly ruled out Ray-Ban because I don't want to be associated with those weird Meta glasses!

Staying up to watch Game 7 between the Thunder and the Spurs has exhausted me, but it was worth it 🙂 #nba #nbaplayoffs
Listening to "Jermaine Jackson's" track "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" and once again stating that when you let Michael Jackson get on the mic, that's *his* track now

@carl@chaos.social that was truly unbelievable. I can't imagine what my father would have made of such mathematical ignorance/dishonesty*

@gavin57 similar, been over thirty years for me. I'd rather read a book than try and work out the magic words needed to pilot the story!

@MintSpies Definitely a genre that avoids inducing sickness - glad they helped!
I think I always found the (to me) bizarreness of the puzzles and the extreme strictness of the input parsing to be frustrating. I could just be programming 😁

Many moons ago, there was a single year when I lived in my parents' house and the newly-available cable TV showed the (men's) NCAA tournament. That was the year UCLA won the title after many years in the wilderness behind the play of the O'Bannon brothers, Tyus Edney, George Zidek, and the reverse-dunking Toby Bailey. Looks like it's their time again the first year I've had it available for online viewing!

@krans I never played those (didn't have access) but as someone who played a bit of D&D as a kid I think I might have enjoyed the experience!
