Get professional data recovery for your laptops. Alternatively, boot them in target disk mode and have another mac user copy them to a NAS for you. Always have a local copy of the stuff you care about!
Find a lawyer to write them a letter. Letters from lawyers go to the legal department, which is instant escalation. If that doesn’t work, consider further legal action.

@gloopsies@fosstodon.org Everone wants this! Alas, choice HAS hurt the open source. Devs are spread thin across dozens if not hundreds of projects, many feeling half-finished. I've been diving into Blender lately, and I think there is a lot of potential for it as a "hub" for creating alternatives. I like for instance how its API can be utilized by other software (e.g. Openshot can use it to generate titles). Building new tools around something like this promotes interoperability, and is probably easier!

Blender has a Python API, so you don't need to touch any existing code
The number one complaint people have about blender is the UI, but if you want to build your own UI you can, and then just use blender for compositing / rendering via the API
blender can already be used to edit 2D vector graphics, raster texture editing on a 2d plane, and video keyframes. If someone were to create separate programs with specialized UI's for this via API, it would rival the Adobe suite easy
