#Mullvad's co-CEO claims to support "freedom" while also supporting remigration, because his concept of personal freedom is tied to privilege and wealth, and preserving those things. That is unrelated to freedom. Opposing immigration is incompatible with supporting freedom. We are only free when everyone is free.

Don’t get scammed by Apple’s new Quest Labs integration. You can get those labs from Quest via Goodlabs.com for WAY less than $120, and it’ll still sync to Apple Health through Quest’s portal. #AppleHealth #AppleEvent #Apple

If anyone uses #AppVerifier on #Android we are hoping to publish a database of APK signatures to privacyguides.org soon, and are accepting crowdsourced submissions now: https://github.com/privacyguides/verified-apps/issues/new?template=app-submission.yml

If you can contribute some apps you use, we'd appreciate it!

Honestly I've never seen anyone on Mastodon post about content warnings (one way or the other) as much as @mattblaze@federate.social does lol However, if you are the type to "demand" he (or anyone else) use content warnings, can I introduce you to Mastodon's keyword filters? You can literally add content warnings to any person's post on your own: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/ The number of politics-related keywords you'd have to add to a filter in order to block 99.9%+ of political posts is really quite short actually. It is not an unreasonable burden to filter them yourself. 10/10 recommend if you don't want politics on your timeline 👍️

Finally got to publish another great video, we got a chance to speak with Naomi Brockwell, a legendary privacy advocate making a foray into policywriting with the Surveillance Accountability Act.

If you're in the USA and want to get involved, or if you're elsewhere and want inspiration for your own advocacy work, absolutely give it a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9Vb3hTxdP4

ICYMI, “Prophecy” by @carissaveliz@mstdn.social, and “Privacy’s Defender” by @eff@mastodon.social’s Cindy Cohn are both new releases you can order now. AND we just had the opportunities to interview both of them this month at @privacyguides@mastodon.neat.computer – find the videos on our channel 😉

Saw a paper recently that said LLMs can correctly answer multiple choice questions without knowing the question being asked.

And people online are all impressed/confused about it of course, but like… surely anyone can look at a list like:

(A) cos(x)
(B) sin(x)
(C) -sin(x)
(D) sin(2x)

And immediately intuit that B is the right answer, no? This is how I did all my tests in school lol

RE: https://mastodon.social/@zackwhittaker/116976288125973754

Prosecutors later charged Tunick under a federal statute that makes it unlawful to knowingly destroy or damage property to prevent authorities from seizing it.

They did successfully seize the phone (the physical device) though 🤔

Notoriously (in privacy-related cases) you don't have property rights over your data, it's not a commodity. If the government can claim this is property, can I now sue data brokers for stealing/possessing my property?

I am not a lawyer, obviously.

The person's attorney said feds are using a rarely used federal statute, and security experts said they hadn't heard of similar cases. This raises fresh questions about constitutional rights and device searches at the U.S. border. Also: the DOJ's indictment had a notable typo. @WastedRadiance@urbanists.social @privacyguides@mastodon.neat.computer None of these things change anything. I really don’t see facial scans as an acceptable alternative. Among other privacy issues, they are inaccurate (thus likely requiring an even more privacy invasive fallback option), and normalize facial recognition in other areas of society as merely another way to identify yourself. Any form of facial recognition that would even possibly approach acceptability would have to be so unrestrictive that they might as well not exist at all. Anything less, i.e. requiring some black box AI model and/or “verifiable” (by some third party) code execution essentially becomes a DRM scheme, another technology the FOSS community also cannot find acceptable. If society demands OS-level age gating, it can only come in the form of a user self-attesting their age at setup and the OS storing that information. There is a massive practical benefit to parents even in this case. Yes, kids could lie here, but parents only have to ensure they don’t lie a single time (during setup) rather than that they don’t lie every time they enter their DOB on a random website or app. It’s understandable for parents to want more robust parental controls, but they should come at a cost of even a tiny modicum of parental responsibility. Eschewing ALL responsibility for parenting your children to a third-party (even a face scanning system with all the protections Proton's post describes) makes 0 sense, and is unacceptable for adults also swept up in this.

@voxel@infosec.space thanks for sharing your thoughts! I disagree with many of these takeaways. There is one I (somewhat) agree with, regarding Section 86a and the political insult law: I think the source article made a small error, or at least if they were correct I cannot find a source for this. The error is that the statistic that was doubled being cited here refers to investigations of §86 and §86a combined, not §86a alone; so I can't definitively say "under 86a" specifically, rather it should be "under 86 and 86a" BKS published statistics in this 2025 document, and in table 2 of the document it notes section 86 and 86a propaganda offenses at 30,379 in 2025. Compare to this 2015 document which states that 35.1% of the political offenses listed are 86/86a propaganda offenses, which would be roughly 13,700. 13,700 -> 30,379 is comfortably double the number. The ordinary political insult figure comes from PKS 2025 which notes 4,792 cases. (in Excel format, annoyingly) It is also worth noting that these are police-recorded "offenses," which are probably higher than the number of "investigations" depending on how you define an investigation. I would imagine that the number of investigative proceedings is correlated and so the statement is still at least approximately true, but I would say it would be more accurate to have said "police-recorded propaganda offenses." Anyways, the number of "Nazi symbol ban" specific offenses may or may not have doubled, but the number of political propaganda offenses certainly did double, which was really the crux of the story. Your other notes are largely semantics or stretches which I do not believe affect the facts or meaning of the story we shared in that episode. In particular, your "fact check" regarding the UN does not negate what we or the article stated. The fact that Irene Khan's findings/report are not the official position of the UN does not change the fact that the investigation itself was performed under the UN's mandate by a UN appointed expert, constituting a UN investigation.
