Hate against the government, the courts, the left, the gays, the women, the immigrants, the minorities, the cyclists, etc, etc. It is how Zuckerberg makes money: by stimulating rage and rage bait. @musevg@23.social Embarassed Dutch guy here. The new government is lead by Jetten, who is the leader of D'66, which used to be a slightly left of center liberal party. I had high regard for previous leaders like Van Mierlo and Jan Terlouw. Despite keeping Sweden open and not masking, we did not have a high mortality compared to other industrialized countries. It was about the average for the EU. This one's orbit is just a bit above that of the ISS, which is only bright shortly after sunset or before sunrise, for a few minutes. I have seen a few Youtube videos with her, both lectures and interviews. It is not certain if or when this kind of disasters will happen (jet stream, AMOC collapse, or even the collapse of the 3-cell system of atmospheric circulation). But the effects would be much worse than shifting the wheat boundary by a few hundred kilometers (which is bad enough at present rates). I feel that it is quite likely that our weather will change quite a bit when Arctic sea ice disappears. That is why I keep an eye on Zack's graphs. @ZLabe@fediscience.org

Ett liv i leran, på 1800-talet. Och jag hade förmodligen inte hunnit fylla 66.

Remember: the unit of absorbed dose is the Gray which is 1 joule per kilogram. And 1 gray is an awful lot in terms of ionizing radiation but it is little energy and it gives rise to a practically imperceptible temperature change.

And finally, parliamentary inquests. (I am not deeply knowledgeable about either scandal. Their conclusions support that the Swedish voluntary approach was correct. And what initial rigorous and intrusive control measures would they have taken? Stop people from returning from their wintersport vacations in March 2020? Putting them in quarantine camps? Was there any basis for that at the time, any evidence that it would have worked? Even now there is no evidence that such measures would have helped to keep the totals down. Initially, there was the official recommendation not to travel further than about 100 km. @augieray@mastodon.social And there is not much one can do about it. Even the draconian measures in China did not eliminate the virus, so they gave up. Sweden never really tried elimination. We did not use masks and excess mortality here is lower than in most countries.

@augieray@mastodon.social That graph shows that Sweden's cumulative death rate from covid is comparable to Germany (where masks are still mandatory in trains). And lower than UK, US and Italy. Higher than "world" but that just means that Sweden was testing better than the global average. So what do you suggest Sweden and other countries should do?

Terwijl gemeenten zeggen ertoe gedwongen te zijn om vergunningen te verlenen voor intensieve veehouderij. Het zal wel te maken hebben met de kans dat er beroep wordt aangetekend.

How would you keep people up to date on vaccines? Forcibly? Or "just" threaten to get them fired if they don't comply? And do you really have damned good evidence that those measures have an effect?

@peterdutoit Good. But there are limits to the cooling capacity and at some point they need to stop letting more people in. And then there are limits to the capacity of the electrical grid. I worry that it is practically impossible to prepare for the extreme wet-bulb conditions that are on our way.

@janiuk@mastodon.nu There is a scenario that serious food shortages could happen quite soon when more Arctic sea ice disappears. According to Jennifer Francis, that might lead to summers where the jet stream would not push the high- and low-pressure areas around much anymore. This would then cause consecutive years of simultaneous failed harvests all over the Northern hemisphere. Some years because of drought, some years because of cold and rain. So this could happen long before the average temperature goes up too much for wheat etc. To deal with such problems humanity would need to share the available food equitably. I fear that that is getting less likely. @ZLabe@fediscience.org
