This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record. We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: https://climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/5817787808929/WN_xagcAeAWQqqSZ04Z-knJRA

What did last month reveal about the state of our climate? This next Monthly Climate Brief will take a closer look at the latest global and U.S. climate change indicators, from record ocean heat and persistent drought to wildfire weather conditions across parts of the U.S. We’ll also dig into the rapidly intensifying El Niño and what it could mean for climate risks around the world in the months ahead. Plus, agricultural climatologist Pam Knox will join us as our special guest this month to exp

The last three months really highlight just how widespread the unusually warm sea surface temperatures are found. In addition El Niño, there are several large marine heat waves, with one of the largest departures still across the North Pacific. Data from https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/optimum-interpolation-sst
National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)

Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST)

The NOAA 1/4° Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) is a long term Climate Data Record that incorporates observations from different platforms (satellites, ships, buoys and Argo floats) into a regular global grid. The dataset is interpolated to fill gaps on the grid and create a spatially complete map of sea surface temperature. Satellite and ship observations are referenced to buoys to compensate for platform differences and sensor biases.

Wednesday El Niño update - The explanation for why sea surface temperatures are still at record high levels in the Niño 3.4 region is because of both climate change plus El Niño. Far-reaching El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections are more dependent on temperature gradients, and relative sea surface temperatures are actually more in line with other strong events.

July 2026 was the warmest month for average temperatures on record across the contiguous U.S., even surpassing the Dust Bowl. This was especially due to an increase in those dangerously high overnight temperatures. 📣 REGISTER for our next briefing to learn more: https://climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/5817787808929/WN_bWZWT_KzSzOa7QaKahBg1A

July 2026 set a new record for the month for near-surface air temperatures across the Tropics. Note the long-term warming trend as well (in all months), as indicated by the shading of the older (blue) to more recent years (red). Data from https://doi.org/10.24381/cds.f17050d7

Sea surface temperatures are way above average in parts of the #Arctic as of last month, particularly in the Kara Sea Basin extending to around Svalbard and the Greenland Sea. This is also found in the Hudson Bay due to their very early sea ice melt-out. Data from NOAA OISSTv2.1.

Check out this animation of 100 years of average July temperature anomalies over global land areas (through this year)... Data from NOAAGlobalTemp v6.1.0: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/land-based-station/noaa-global-temp
National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)

NOAAGlobalTemp

The NOAA Merged Land Ocean Global Surface Temperature Analysis (NOAAGlobalTemp, formerly known as MLOST) combines long-term sea surface (water) temperature (SST) and land surface (air) temperature datasets to create a complete, accurate depiction of global temperature trends. The dataset is used to support climate monitoring activities such as the Monthly Global Climate Assessment, and also provides input data for a number of climate models.
