Trump's name is off the Kennedy Center, but it is prominently displayed at The Donald J. Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Reading Room, open now in D.C.. Courtesy of the Institute for Primary Facts, the Trump-Epstein Reading Room displays all the currently available, partially redacted, Epstein files, bound into 3,437 volumes. You can confront the extent of the information our "justice" system has refused to act on, share thoughts on a response wall, call the DOJ directly, and see the Trump-Epstein timeline. Open to the public from 10-8 Saturday and Sunday. https://trumpsonian.us/ #Trump #Epstein #ReleaseTheEpsteinFiles

The whole column is worth reading, but just to expand a little on this comment about why the racist right is in such a frenzy about the #TheOdyssey cast: "[Black people don't belong, because] The Odyssey is a pillar of “Western civilization,” which they consider to be white. SO MUCH work went into constructing this view of a "Western Civilization" stretching from the ancient Mediterranean (or even Mesopotamia) to the northern European/American present, much of it carried out in the nineteenth century as part of an explicit program of racial and imperial justification. And the contortions to make it "white" are equally illuminating. #Renaissance authors who looked to the ancient past were much more acutely attuned to the distinctions between southern Europe with its connections to the Mediterranean, and the northern areas outside of Rome. 🎁 link: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/07/odyssey-race/688058/?gift=2KhEOewKu103aR6RIOWuaqHRMEZxJM4PdCaSqDwGdkg&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share @histodons #WesternCivilization #imperialism

Journalist Steven Thrasher, PhD (The Viral Underclass, The Overseer Class) is suing Northwestern University and the US Government after NU terminated his appointment as the Daniel Renberg Chair for (ahem) Social Justice following GOP (and apparently trustee) pressure over his actions in solidarity with #Gaza and campus #GazaSolidarity protests. The Dean of the Journalism School and all of Northwestern's administration look like cowards and lickspittles in the face of threats to #AcademicFreedom and #HumanRights. I'm glad he's suing (am very interested in what discovery turns up) and furious that he has to. https://lithub.com/when-we-fight-we-win-why-i-am-suing-northwestern-university-and-the-us-government/ #AcademicChatter #USHigherEd #HigherEd #USPol

@amydiehl@mstdn.social Yep. To be financially independent, women had to be single or widowed - if married, the household property belonged to the husband. That put them, as the article notes, outside of societal expectations and made them vulnerable. Status could certainly excite jealousy and create the frictions that led to witchcraft suspicions and accusations, but poverty was more often associated with accused and condemned witches - women who had to fend for themselves by providing magical spells and healing, who needed to beg, or who otherwise lacked a secure station were always seen as potential threats. Thomas Robisheaux’s The Last Witch of Langenburg is a terrific study of all these various factors, including how women’s domestic roles were perceived to connect them to witchcraft.

From independent journalist Marisa Kabas:

"We must stem the idea being pushed by tech companies and their billionaire funders who’ve sunk too much into their products to admit defeat that the infiltration of AI into journalism is inevitable; because from my perch as an independent journalist, it simply is not."

The #ProPublica Guild is asking supporters to send a letter to Paul Sagan, chair of the Pro Publica board, to direct senior management to agree to a fair contract - link below to send a letter, including suggested text (although I wrote my own).

I love @hcommons.social! The moderators are great and the longer word limit means I don’t have to chop up my thoughts. If you are connected to the humanities in some way and would like to move to a longstanding instance with good guardrails and lots of space, take a few minutes to fill out the questionnaire!

"A Harvard researcher who studies gambling regulation said it takes five to seven years after legalization for a country to become “painfully aware of all the misery that increased access wreaks on public health, public finances, and so on.”

We’re at year seven, so, I suppose we’re right on time."

@morganth@social.tchncs.de As others have said, one issue is getting the needs of one person and the capabilities of the other lined up. I try to be proactive in offering help to people who's situation I know - with specific examples of what I can/am willing to do - "I can run errands/pick you up/help in the garden/bring food and visit/read and comment on your proposal/paper." I've discovered that once you've given and received help a few times from a person/community, it gets easier to do so. You're no longer asking for a special favor, you are continuing the chain.

So #Anthropic #AI is not only stealing author's work, it's destroying physical #books to do so. Anthropic is not the "good guy" of AI; it's just total contempt for human labor and creativity all the way down.
