@LordWoolamaloo@mastodon.scot who would have a better idea of the state of the UK, a billionaire who lives in an insulated cloud of money or a homeless person? Maybe the bbc could spend some time interviewing them and write a story. These are all journalistic choices and it's clear who the bbc is by the choices they do and don't make.

@rooster@beige.party more than all the dieting and exercise tips, learning to love your body and focus on mental health as a path to physical health is so important. You look great.
Losing weight is hard and takes a long time, fat has a higher energy density than TNT, it'll take a while to burn off that energy. Your body also reacts if you try to lose weight too fast, burning muscle, triggering sleep and hunger cravings. So aim for a slight calorie reduction under 15% and take it slow. 1/

@dbattistella@mstdn.ca this is a problem not just for gmail users but for everyone who sends or receives anything from gmail. I've been off gmail for years but lots of friends and family aren't, should I now send them a message saying I'm sorry I can no longer send you mail at this address? We need laws that make this just straight up illegal.

@ErikUden@mastodon.de AI companies' best customers are ignorant, so it makes perfect business sense to destroy knowledge they don't control. This creates perverse incentives, in the same way that a health care system that profits off the sick has no interest in preventative care.

@davidho@mastodon.world putting a sentient feeling creature in a tiny cage is torture, just imagine what you would think of a person who kept their cat in a tiny cage because then it runs around less and that way they can feed it less so it has a lower carbon footprint. If that's the conclusion we should stop consuming eggs.

@emptywheel.bsky.social I always start by looking at 2nd hand, see what's available at what price, compare that to buying new, sometimes you find a gem. If your worried about theft, get good U lock and separate back wheel lock, that'll probably make you less attractive to steal than the bike next to you.

The house had passed the 1.15 trillion NDAA, including deepening ties with Israel and they did it with Democrat support.
"This is the dumb trick the Dem Party has been using on their followers for years now.
When something they pretend to oppose “must pass” (like the NDAA), they ensure there are just enough Dem votes for it to pass, even if it’s just by one vote."

@AkaSci@fosstodon.org there are all sorts of problems with heat tiles reuse. They absorb water like crazy, so if they get wet by say falling into the ocean, you would need to put them in an oven, probably under vacuum for hours. You can coat the tiles with water proofing but that burns off on re-entry so you then would need to reapply the coating, ever single time.

SPCX has dropped below $120 a share, down 10% on the IPO. This isn't going well, unless your a short seller, those people are currently up $15.5 billion. This is with only 5% of the shares available, Aug 6th the next 20% becomes unlocked flooding the market. Going to be interesting to see how much more money the muskbros have left to absorb this toxic sludge.

Jon Ronsom wrote a book "So you've been publicly shamed", looking at how the internet and social media is used to pile into people, like a mediaeval mob throwing rotting fruit at someone in the stocks.
Outrage is great for engagement and stirring up the mob gets you follows. So next time your see an outrageous story, maybe step back before reflexively grabbing your pitchfork and torch.

Road wear, increased infrastructure, noise and particulate pollution, crashes, carbon emissions, lost time, personal savings, which get put straight back into the local economy instead of foreign oil produces. Never mind the intangibles of a society traveling together, rather than sitting isolated in metal boxes.
Calculated honestly a rail network never loses money, stop treating them like businesses.

@susankayequinn@wandering.shop good read, he misses out the complete failure of the media, the large respectable institutions to call bullshit on the years and years and years of false claims and missed deadlines. It was left to obscure bloggers and youtubers to point at the naked emperor. The exact same thing is happening now with the AI bubble, why is it being left to podcasters and bloggers to point out they are all burning money and have no path to profitability. Outlets like 404 media give me hope.

If you want to read what #jkrowling got pulled off Amnesty's website, see below. From the report:
"Eroding existing frameworks
Anti-rights groups seek to weaken existing human rights protections and prevent further
progress. They do this through litigation, campaigning, advocacy and political influence. Many
promote social and legal frameworks based on traditional and restrictive ideas about gender,
sexuality and family life."

@danwentzel@urbanists.social the current PE of Tesla is 330:1. That is speculation on the stock is $330 to every $1 of actual revenue. The people buying the cars are a problem but completely trivial compared to the uncritical media, government contracts, lack of regulation and financial speculation that drives Musk's wealth.

"... growers survive a price-cost squeeze that formal wages could not have survived. It let the government avoid choosing between food-price inflation and rural unemployment. It let consumers eat cheaply. The cost of making all of that work was carried by people with no vote, no recourse, and now, it turns out, no protection. When a political movement decided to make them the target, they absorbed that cost too, by fleeing.”

DemocracyNow reporting on a AI generated argument between Sam Altman and Naomi Klein is where we are now.
The internet is increasingly LLM content, and because it's so much easier to generate soon it will be, or maybe already is, the majority. That will discourage actual content creators to create and readers to read, advertisers to advertise and hosters to host. This is the path to the dead internet.

Like we weren't part of the Holocaust. It doesn't matter. It still affects me. I still have shame as a part German for the fact that Germany did this Holocaust.
