@eclectech I believe that the loss of connection and/or empathy that happens when you no longer share conditions with other people, along with then perpetually wanting more security for yourself at the expense of everyone else, is actually a well known psychological phenomenon. I also believe that this is one of the main reasons why e.g. the Nordics are very careful about ensuring income redistribution via progressive taxation, because it leads to a more cohesive society overall.

@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io Historically, this is unfortunately true. I would *hope* that this is not the outcome going forward. That said, there is an increasing acceptance that the future belongs to the Global South, not Europe, and that we as Europeans have a duty to engage in good faith (for once, some might add!) with said Global South. In closing, I would add that awful regimes often arise because there is nothing to temper their awfulness. @Reinald@nrw.social @RunRichRun@mastodon.social @cyberlyra@hachyderm.io @davidnjoku@mastodon.world @piquant00@mastodon.online

Feline violence
@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange Cats can become intensely jealous and attack each other because of it. Cats competing for a relationship, or for establishing dominance, are not subtle (and rarely gentle) about it. Source: I have had cats for 10+ years now, and have seen this happen on multiple occasions with different cats.

@TeaKayB I like Kobo's hardware, and they're "open enough" for my tastes. I believe that there's also open source firmware support for them if you want to tinker with that sort of thing. Though I suppose this is probably beside the point for people who just want a decent consumer experience in what is a decent bit of kit.

3/7 Palantir's ownership group is openly undemocratic and is also part of the current US government's inner circle. Peter Thiel has repeatedly stated that democracy and personal freedom cannot coexist.

@aral I take it to mean that you think all similar religious texts should also not be sources of truth then, including the Quran, the Torah etc.? This is not an attempt at being facetious btw; I'm genuinely curious about your stance. For my part, I get the sense that many of these texts are trying to impart cultural lessons about how to survive as humans in a society. I would imagine that these cultural lessons would tend to evolve over time, as humanity as a whole learns more about the world?

"A Linux system that works so well that I never need to fix anything." In my defence, you *did* say "linux problems I don't have". >_> I note that you obviously did not ask about solicitations either, just as you did not ask why #AerynOS really doesn't want people using LLMs if they choose to contribute. In any case, if you can stomach it being alpha and therefore still in development, @AerynOS might be worth a look. It is recommended that you try it out in a VM or on a secondary computer.

2/7 Palantir is central to the social and political unrest in the US we are seeing these days, where ICE is using it in a big way. The same ICE that goes after people based on, for example, skin color.

@TopKnot And in case you haven't been paying attention: The current U.S. President has threatened to annex Canada, Greenland (a self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, which is an EU member) and now the British Falkland Islands. The EU has responded by building stronger ties with Canada and the UK, and serious discussions are under way for Norway, Iceland, the UK, Ukraine, Moldova and others to (re-)join the EU, where the §42.7 clause is poised to become the new security guarantee.

@compost_funeral@kolektiva.social That's the natural history component of this baked-in trait. But you also have to appreciate that the kind of Christianity that is prevalent in Northern Europe (Lutheran and Calvinistic) actually preaches that it is important to not only find satisfaction in hard work and ethical industry, but to see it as a religious duty and as a joyful tribute to the Creator. This has had profound implications in terms of culture in Northern Europe. @KimCrayton1@dair-community.social

@wombatpandaa You say "pathetic". I say "Nakedly racist policy". I would argue that the U.S. has simply been unmasked, such that nobody (including the rest of the world) can ignore that the divisions that led to the U.S. Civil War still very much exist. Until the USA reckons with that, good luck getting single payer universal health care, because that would imply that white people will pay tax that coloured people will benefit from -- nevermind that the reverse also holds true. @Nonilex

A remarkable woman and person indeed. My condolences.

@TopKnot The question isn't if the U.S. will be a part of NATO in two years. It is if anyone else will. The EU is dusting off its Lisbon Treaty §42.7 Musketeer Oath alternative, and the Joint Expeditionary Force -- led by the UK and consisting of 9 other like-minded Nordic & Baltic countries + the Netherlands -- have set up a command structure with no U.S. input or influence, which could become the backbone of an alliance counting Canada, Ukraine, Turkey, the EU and the JEF. @Free_Press

@Remittancegirl These are not my words. These are the (albeit paraphrased) words of someone who used to be in the Trad wife Evangelical camp and was imploring Democrats to understand what they're up against. I would suggest that Democrats pay attention to this, on the assumption that if you want to help change someone else's mind or frame of reference, first you have to understand where they come from and communicate with them in a way that makes intuitive sense to them. @hypostase

@hypostase I have seen "reformed" former Tradwife Evangelicals plead with more a progressive democrat audience to *please* understand that the idea of submitting to a strong leader of the flock is embedded in the Evangelical upbringing. They basically say that if democrats want to win the more moderate of these people over, they need to select candidates who can speak to them like they expect; that is, as a flock leader. Quite simple once you understand the basic premise. @Remittancegirl

@Kroc@oldbytes.space It always fascinates me when someone points out how new iterations of technology removes shackles that everyone had sort of internalised as "that's just how it is". See also: The concept of a glass teletype and how that changed the world of communications, or Image Recognition + Machine Learning, that has made it possible for researchers to use massive datasets consisting of millions of source images, instead of having to painstakingly digitize tens of images by hand. @dfstarshine@icosahedron.website

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net With a margin this big, I imagine Orbán and his handlers saw no real scope to contest the results? I am already quietly beginning to fear the ways in which state actors will ramp up their attempts to sabotage things in the EU; a defeat this resounding will have set off very loud alarm bells all the way through Beijing, Moscow and Washington*. *: To think that we have to now include Washington (& the CIA) in said company is in itself *extremely* concerning, but here we are.
