Mini status update: 1st July 2026

We have spoken about our Versioned Repositories, phase 2 goal for months now and due to the awesome work of Tarkah and ermo, this was landed a little over a week ago to our volatile stream. Further infrastructure upgrades are in the pipeline and we will expand on it all in a future blog post.

We have landed new kernels (7.1 series), new DE versions (Plasma 6.7, Cosmic 1.2 and Gnome 50.3) amongst a load of other updates. In addition to that, Reilly has done a fairly extensive rework of our systemd package and how it works.

We need to let all these changes simmer for a few more days along with a little more testing of the Versioned Repositories, phase 2 code upgrades, before we sync our volatile stream contents to our unstable stream.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Unstable stream update: 8th July 2028

A smaller stream update today, though no less important!

Updates for Nvidia users with improved DLSS support, better sleep and wake from suspend functionality. Overall the Nvidia experience on AerynOS is improving with the additional feedback we are getting from testers!

Openssh configuration has been improved and better set up for our Stateless approach and allowing users to set up their configurations as required.

The full changelog can be found at our GitHub discussions:

Unstable Stream Updates: 10th June 2026

Notable updates include JACK sound support added via Pipewire and OpenZFS file system support added via a kernel module.

We have wider updates to the Cosmic, KDE and GNOME stacks + loads more!

https://github.com/orgs/AerynOS/discussions/165

On a separate note, the AerynOS Stripe one-off donation link was disabled last week as it was subject to a card testing attack. The issue is resolved and the link is re-enabled again.

These sorts of attacks impact the projects ability to collect donations to help cover project costs and save up for future project investment. If you like the work we are doing, please consider donating to the project.

AerynOS branding update

The AerynOS team has transitioned to a new logo and brand colour palette.

The new logo was created with community input and we feel it looks much better and comes with a light theme variation.

For the colors:
Green: Links to nature like our tooling (moss, boulder, summit, avalanche etc)
Orange: Links to Rust which is our primary programming language

Branding assets repo: https://github.com/AerynOS/brand/

This has been a long running project in the background with the original concept for this design suggested over a year ago when we originally rebranded to AerynOS. The old logo was used as a placeholder and we hadn't intended to run with it so long.

We hope you like the new branding and this will now allow us to continue working on our new website redesign as our next background workstream.

It's been 2½ months since the AerynOS @zulip@fosstodon.org server went public. Some interesting key stats as of yesterday:

250 members
32.5k messages sent
14.3% of all those messages sent by me (NomadicCore)

The server has been working really well for us as a community with zero reliability issues and the use of channels and topics allowing for focused and varied discussions!

The server has been sponsored by Zulip as part of their commitment to open source and we want to thank them for that! All round success!

Come and check it out and get involved with AerynOS!

Less than a month ago, I posted about AerynOS making it into the Distrowatch Top40.

Now, just less than a month later, we have managed to get into the Top30 and our hits per day are still increasing.

It's fair to say the Distrowatch ranking isn't an accurate sign of popularity in the sense of active users. All the distros around AerynOS in the rankings will dwarf us in actual installs.

What I do think this points to is that people are becoming increasingly aware of AerynOS and are interested in following along with our progress whilst we are on our journey in eventually delivering a robust and stable solution.

AerynOS build infrastructure demo

Demonstration of our 4 builders churning through Plasma 6.6, visualised on our Summit dashboard.

We have and continue to build our tooling to make packaging and distro management as easy as possible. The infrastructure is flexible to add more builders as needed and these visualisation options help diagnose issues as they may arise.

So far, everything seems to be running nicely but we will keep it in our volatile repository for around a week whilst we do further testing.

AerynOS Unstable Stream update: 11th February 2026

This week we have a sizable update landing in our unstable repository with updates to many of our DEs, updates to how boulder works to making life easier for our packagers, an additional installation option in lichen (to make setting up a custom Window Manager install easier), changes to our kernel scheduler, new packages and much more.

With all the new updates and specifically with the lichen installer update, we will likely land a new ISO much sooner than our usual cadence.

This week, we have also included links to our new Stripe donation options. Stripe will be the preferred method for receiving donations going forwards as it reduces the overall fees we are being charged (compared to Ko-Fi) by around 7% which is not insignificant!

The GitHub discussion post has all the details as there is much more that can't be covered in a Mastodon summary post.

@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org Joey Riches will be using the laptop to dogfood and help develop AerynOS. His initial feedback was that the build and installation process went smoothly. Everything works out of the box including the fingerprint sensor in our KDE environment. He also commented that the speakers were some of the best he had heard on a laptop. All in all, he is happy to have received the Framework 16 as it will help him contribute to the AerynOS project. Framework's repairability and upgradability will also serve us well into the future. For example, Framework previously sent the project a Framework 13. Due to a mishap, the screen on that device subsequently broke but it was a simple process to get a replacement screen and get the laptop back in working order.

@cozybuild@mastodon.social So we have the "terminal-only" option as a consideration for advanced users and server workloads but honestly, if something goes wrong, we can't accept any responsibility as when we say alpha, we really mean alpha!

Aside from that, I also wonder if we have all the packages one might need for common server use cases?

Do with that information what you will. We do believe that in time, the core tooling we are building will be very capable and flexible for a lot of different workloads.
