Had my first 1 to 1 session at the local Autism Hub today. Felt quite positive, obv had homework, one of which was to fill this ADHD screening questionnaire out. I said that although I'm aware I have SOME traits, as our youngest has recently gone through ADHD diagnosis, I didn't feel that I was likely to have it strongly. Now I'm not so sure. Here's my screening form - it's only an indicator, but shit, it's much stronger than I expected.

Edit: forgot the hashtags. #Autistic #adhd #audhd @Autistics #Neurospicy

I tend to see everything as shades of grey but find nt thinking to be reductive and all or nothing - I see a lot of nuance in things nts seem to see as black and white, but I definitely don't arrive at conclusions the same way they do, as I consider angles they often can't even see. We are, after all, a spectrum of experiences.

@Psychonaut @autistics I can't offer much advice, because I'm navigating something similar - I'm mid burnout myself, probably not the first time, but certainly the most severe: brain fog, loss of function, memory/recall problems, panic when confronted by cognitive load, dissociation/laggy feeling, lack of motivation, sleepiness AND sleeplessness, increased sensory sensitivities... What I THINK has helped has been: The lovely people on the Mastodon #ActuallyAutistic hash tag and @Autistics group; walking, particularly in the countryside; where possible, staying away from: social situations, big supermarkets, shopping centres, and any other sources of stress/sensory overload; avoiding stressful/high concentration tasks; Fidget toys; This article was particularly informative for me, explaining why "little things" kept knocking me back to square one. Spoiler: it's all snakes and no ladders. https://www.dralicenicholls.com/step-by-step-recovery-from-autistic-burnout-what-you-need-at-every-stage/ Working through a Burnout workbook, and trying to follow the advice therein (lots of things earlier in this list) but specifically learning about how things like alexithymia, interoception, sensory sensitivities, stress etc. feed into the burnout cycle. The Neurodivergence Skills Workbook for Autism and ADHD by Jennifer Kemp and Monique Mitchelson. Good luck. It's a heck of a journey, but I believe we can all improve our situation. The more you understand about yourself (and your own unique profile) the better you can know what will help.

@danielgibert@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr We never really left the mainframe era. There were certainly less players in the field, but IBM has never stopped making mainstreams and mini computers - they are still used heavily by banks, government and commerce. And the big five tech corps have basically recreated mainframes out of clusters of pc servers and fast networks - it's basically the same architecture as you find inside a mainframes, but on a much later scale. That Master Control Program is just called something like Kubernetes (Greek for Captain) or Terraform or Docker.

I've never needed with s3 outside of aws, and only then on someone else's infra. I think my NAS setup is a fair bit simpler than yours! It's primarily an NFS server and also does rsync backup duties, and runs a web server for my blog.

@grumpyoldtechie @nitinkhanna @SecureOwl Just put a curl statement into your .profile or .bashrc. I used to have this set up on some machines I admined at an MSP some years ago, because there was a rogue employee at a customer that used to log in and change stuff without telling us, causing things to break, then blame us. I made a shell script and put a condition in it to check if it's running in an ssh session, and report if it was not a known IP of ours, then append to a log which was watched by Nagios. We would get an alert every time they poked round. Obv Nagios is probably way too much overkill for your situation, but it really could be anything - like I said before, curl/wget or even an email would do it.

@murdoc @autistics Yes. Can relate totally. I am similar, and I have way too many projects part finished. I ran a makerspace for about 5 years, and that helped a lot but ended up burning me out because of admin reasons. One of the best things about it while it was running was people bringing in projects, explaining all about them, where they were maybe stuck, what they wanted feedback about, validation, development ideas etc. and other people helping them through it, and collaborations forming. I've wanted to do something, probably more virtual/online for quite a while, but it's on hold at the moment because of my CURRENT burnout episode. I'd still be interested though, but would have to limit myself for the time being. I understand your idea of projects might not involve MAKING things (could be research, learning, deep diving a topic etc), but I suspect the principles are probably similar.

@autismunicorn@autistics.life @autistics@fedigroups.social Work, online and community work. I met my ex and wife online (AOL back in the day, and a dating site in the mid naughties). As I moved 300 miles to live with my ex, I lost touch with my childhood friends, and ended up with no proper friends, other than work colleagues for about 10 years. When I moved again to be with my now wife, I was still without other friends until I joined a club, and later started up a makerspace. Although that fell apart, I'm still friends with some people, though I haven't seen most of them much since my burnout started.

@arclight I think it's the classic case of management thinking that all the effort in planning changes is spent on working out which buttons to press, rather than applying specific domain knowledge, experience and researching and testing the process. Sure an LLM can generate a simulacra of a change plan, including a bunch of steps to achieve the goal, but without peer review, a risk assessment and full back out plan, you're just going on hope and a prayer. The most stupid thing about the article was that the guy asked the LLM to explain itself, as if it was capable of having done anything other than spat out a Markov chain style output of what looked like a likely answer. It did not review what it had done. It was not contrite in the face of a fuckup. It just rolled the dice again and spat out what the prompter wanted to hear. I can't believe people are so taken in but this rubbish. As you say, it's essentially lack of control and blind faith in flawed tools with no technical oversight. Pretty much akin to running a script you found on the internet in a live environment without reading through to see what it does. People who do this basically deserve what they get.

@jpaskaruk Well, here in Telford in the UK, We've got Weatherspoons... And that's about it (it's a bland chain pub, no live music). There are occasional pink/alternative gigs in Shrewsbury, the next town over. Been to a few too, though I'm not feeling up to going to the one tonight. But I used to work at festivals in the early 00's, and there were many nights where we used to go from tent bar to tent bar watching bands like Tarantism, 3 Daft Monkeys and then impromptu jams by a fire under the stars... Said I kind of get your drift. Fond memories.

@lizzard @autistics I've had random bouts of insomnia for most of my adult life. They usually only last a few weeks, but are utterly draining. Something I've found useful to a limited extent - worked for about a year, but then I got burnout and it stopped - was "thought jamming" (my name for it). What you have to do is some mildly hard thinking like making up a constant stream of random things, or envisioning walking around a favourite calm space in as much detail as you can. If you find yourself thinking about anything else, you "just" have to adjust courses back to your chosen strategy. I guess it's like counting sheep on steroids. I heard about it on Mastodon, can't remember if it was given a name, and I was skeptical until I tried it, but it did work for a while.

@Uair VPN can be a separate app, but "network-manager-openvpn" is a plugin for the NetworkManager. There are other VPNs that are discrete applications, but they are usually more fiddly to use. Some vendors provide (usually paid for) NM plugins preconfigured for their system. The openvpn one is able to connect to any VPN provider, but there isn't a free, default one.

@Uair In short, no. But it IS a front for the usual (command-line) package management utilities "apt" and "apt-get" (I don't make up the names). You could use those, but it can lead to other complications. Especially when using third-party downloaded packages. It's really best not to do that. Linux works VERY differently to Windows in this respect. If I remember correctly, you are on Linux Mint. Have you searched in software manager for network-manager-openvpn? I'm not on stock LM (I'm using their LMDE variant) but it's in there for me. If you install THAT one, it's guaranteed to be the correct one. Once you have it installed, if you click on your network icon near the time (usually looks like a wifi symbol, can be a "network" symbol if you are using wired network) and then on "Network connections". In the window that opens, click the "+" button at the bottom left. Click where it says Ethernet, and near the bottom of the selector, you should see OpenVPN. Click on it, and then on the "Create..." button. The connection details dialog then opens, showing the VPN tab. You need to fill in all those details as specified by your VPN provider. You can put any name you like in the top "Connection name" field, or just leave it as "VPN connection 1" or whatever it has in there. Once you have done that, it should appear in the network manager, and you should be able to connect and disconnect as you wish. I can't remember exactly where, and as I currently am not using a VPN, I can't probe through my setup to write that up for you.

@gordoooo_z Yikes. Sounds like disassembly is in the cards then. I assumed it was mono because brother lasers usually are. At least that makes the mechanism simpler. May be worth taking the tiger out and giving it a good shake? It's got to have gone somewhere. I hope you can fix it. I used to maintain design jets at a previous job in the 00's. Really well engineered. I did a belt assembly replacement on one. So serviceable. Getting the cartridges for the older ones is difficult these days though. I was gifted one for the makerspace I used to run, but when the cartridges ran out, we couldn't get any more, not even refills. It also developed a problem homing the carriage, which turned out to be because of the rail lubricant drying out. Main symptom was the sheet cutter not engaging properly and tearing the paper.

@gordoooo_z The worst of it is that usually printer support doesn't even need binaries/software. It's "just" a PCAP file (ok, maybe that's an over-simplification) and it's got even easier of late, because a lot of printers now accept "universal" formats like PDF and other document description languages. I think it's mainly just because the manufacturers don't get many requests for Linux drivers, and they also know that popular models will get generic support from the "community" eventually, at no effort from them. Glad to see Brother supporting Linux though.

A lot of the ease-of-use improvements have been in the desktop environment arena, so all the other distros can benefit too. I've run Debian for over a decade at this stage, but recently moved over to the Linux Mint flavoured version "LMDE", or Linux Mint Debian Edition, because I'd found stock Linux Mint to be so good for less technical users. LMDE brings a lot of those creature comforts to Debian, including its very nice desktop environment, Cinnamon.

@gordoooo_z Colour inkjet printers are harder work than lasers (all me why I know!) and I know your pain wrt the hardware problems - I have been repairing printers on and off since the early 90s. Paper sensor levers do tend to go AWOL because they're usually very fragile and go through millions of duty cycles. Moving the paper tray in and out, and every page that passes through causes wear... And they just work, until they don't. Often it's the micro switch that they activate that dies, not often the lever itself. Hopefully you won't have to dismantle it too much to get to the part. If it's the switch, they are usually COTS parts so you can buy online and solder on to the existing wire. If it is the lever... That will be "fun". Good luck!
